Niels Bohr 's father was Christian Bohr and his mother was Ellen Adler. Christian Bohr was awarded a doctorate in physiology from the University of Copenhagen in 1880 and in 1881 he became a Privatdozent at the university. Late in the same year he married Ellen, who was the daughter of David Adler, a Jewish politician with a high standing in Danish political and commercial life. Christian and Ellen had three children. The eldest was Jenny born in 1883 in the mansion which David Adler had owned opposite Christiansborg Castle where the Danish Parliament sat. Ellen's mother had continued to live in this house after her husband David Adler died in 1878 and Ellen had gone back to her mother's home to have her child. Two years later Niels was born on his mother's 25 th birthday in the same stately home, Ellen again having returned to her mother's house for the birth of her child. The third child of the family, who went on to become a famous mathematician, was

Bohr, Aage Niels
Dánský fyzik, syn slavného Nielse Bohra , zakladatele kvantové mechaniky. V roce 1975 získal Nobelovu cenu za fyziku za objev nesférických atomových jader. Cenu sdílí s B. Mottelsonem a J. Rainwaterem
A. Bohr vystudoval Universitu v Copenhagenu, doktorát získal v roce 1954.

Harald Bohr correspondence
The destiny of Harald Bohr's correspondence
The few letters in the Harald Bohr Papers in Copenhagen is a very tiny fraction of the large amount of letters to and from Bohr which once existed. According to Bohr's son, Ole Bohr, Bohr kept the letters he received and organized them well until April 1940 where he destroyed most of them shortly after the German invasion of Denmark. He did that because he was anxious that the Germans should seize on his correspondence and misuse its information about German mathematicians, whom Bohr had helped to leave Germany. According to Asger Aaboe (Yale University), who has had contact with the surviving relatives, the left over of Bohr's collection of correspondence (among other things his correspondence with Godfrey H. Hardy) was kept by Bohr's wife Ulla Bohr for many years, but destroyed by her in the 1970s. There is probably no more correspondence kept by the surviving relatives, at least not any scientific correspondence, and the only part of Bohr's own collection of correspondence which has survived are the letters in the Harald Bohr Papers and some family correspondence (mainly letters to and from his brother Niels) kept in the Family correspondence at the Niels Bohr Archive Hence, the major part of the correspondence listed below is located in other collections. The correspondents are divided in two groups. The first group, which is given alphabetical in a table with links to more details, consists of correspondents where more than one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved. The second group consists of all the minor correspondents where only one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved.

General description of the collection
A short description:
This collection consist of manuscripts, notes, correspondence, obituaries, newspaper articles etc. Regarding the size the educational material and the material from the publication in 1952-53 of Bohr's Collected Mathematical Works is the largest. The educational material consists a major part of his manuscripts for lectures and his copies of mathematical textbooks with his comments. Virtual all the material from the publication of the Collected Mathematical Works has been conserved, i.e. the organisational plan of the works, correspondence with the publisher, editors etc. The biographical material in the collection is reprints of most of the obituaries of Bohr, press clippings about Bohr, some photos of him and other personal papers. The correspondence is only scientific correspondence, but only a small fraction of Bohr's total scientific correspondence. The scientific manuscripts and notes are almost all from Bohr's years of study 1904-10. There is furthermore a collection of speeches given by Bohr at various occasions. In its entirety the material is from the period 1904-65 and in one of the languages: Danish, German, English or French, with the major part in Danish.

New Paper from Ole Ulfbeck and Aage Bohr
[Comments by Peter Mutnick on the paper by Ulfbeck and Bohr]
After listening to a lecture by Ravi Gomatam at UC Berkeley on the role of philosophy in inspiring new theories in physics, I was inspired to look at a paper by Aage Bohr and Ole Ulfbeck that was mentioned in the lecture. I had noticed it before, but I had not paid close attention. I was pleased to find that Aage Bohr is just as wild and wise as his father and just as much fun to read, i.e., he seems to have a good head. The paper that Gomatam had mentioned was the second one, that came out in 2001: "Genuine Fortuitousness. Where Did That Click Come From?" in Foundations of Physics, Vol. 31, No. 5, pp. 757-774. The earlier one, mentioned below, had come out in 1995.
The latter paper seems to have made some corrections to the Ansatz that had been established earlier. In the earlier paper, Bohr and Ulfbeck define the quantum as follows: "As physical variables, the symmetry elements acquire an existence of their own, and the variables of a group together *constitute* an object that will be referred to as a quantum (=quantal object). A full specification of the quantum in general involves the extension of spacetime invariance to include variables associated with gauge transformations."
In any case, the point is that in the new paper it is made clear that the discontinuity or actualization is NOT in the source or the system under observation - it is in the counter, and not just in the counter per se, but in the phenomenal character of the counter as it exists in relation to the spacetime continuum. The quantum is then a feature of the counter, while the system is a feature of the source. Hence the term "quantum system" encompasses both the counter and the source; it does not pass from the source to the counter. The wholeness of the character of the source in relation to the spacetime continuum can be recognized as the quantum implicate order of Bohm.

About Visionlearning Happy Birthday, Mr. Bohr!
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 7, 1885 to Christian Bohr, a professor of physiology at Copenhagen University, and Ellen Bohr, also known as Adler. Niels was the middle of three children, his older sister Jenny was born in 1883, and his younger brother Harald would eventually become a professor of mathematics. Their father, Christian, was a well-known physiologist and was largely responsible for awakening an interest in physics and math in his children.
Harald Bohr In October 1891, Niels entered the Grammelholms School. He did well in school but was not outstanding, usually coming third or fourth in a class of about 20 students. The subject he excelled at was, surprisingly, physical education. He was an excellent soccer player, but not as good as his brother Harald who won a silver medal playing soccer for Denmark.
In 1903, Bohr entered Copenhagen University, and graduated in 1911 with his doctorate. He went on to study at Cambridge under the eminent physicist J.J. Thompson, and later to Manchester University to study with Ernest Rutherford. Rutherford was much more receptive to Bohr's new ideas and the two of them formed a very close personal and working relationship that resulted in Bohr producing his theory of the hydrogen atom in 1913 at the age of 27.
