Bessel (1784-1846) was an astronomer and mathematician known best for the functions bearing his name; the Bessel functions of first and second order appear on this German stamp. Bessel was the first to measure the parallax of a star (Cygni 61) in 1838, thus making it possible to calculate its distance. Observing the motions of the stars Sirius and Procyon, he deduced that each was orbiting around another, dark star. These dark stars were later found to be white dwarfs.

Tulisan Bohr termasuk Rotational States of Atomic Nuclei (1954) dan Nuclear Structure , 2 jilid. (1969, 1975).

I was born in Copenhagen on June 19, 1922, as the fourth son of Niels Bohr
I began studying physics at the University of Copenhagen in 1940 (a few months after the German occupation of Denmark). By that time, I had already begun to assist my father with correspondence, with his writing of articles of a general epistemological character, and gradually also in connection with his work in physics. In those years, he was concerned partly with problems of nuclear physics and partly with problems relating to the penetration of atomic particles through matter.
In October 1943, my father had to flee Denmark to avoid arrest by the Nazis, and the whole family managed to escape to Sweden, where we were warmly received. Shortly afterwards, my father proceeded to England, and I followed after him. He became associated with the atomic energy project and, during the two years until we returned to Denmark, in August 1945, we travelled together spending extensive periods in London, Washington, and Los Alamos. I was acting as his assistant and secretary and had the opportunity daily to share in his work and thoughts. We were members of the British team, and my official position was that of a junior scientific officer employed by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in London. In another context, I have attempted to describe some of the events of those years and my father's efforts relating to the prospects raised by the atomic weapons

Portions of this entry contributed by Leonardo Motta Danish physicist born in Copenhagen on June 19, 1922 as the fourth son of Margarethe and Niels Bohr . He entered the Copenhagen University in 1940, following the steps of his father. By that time, Aage was already assisting his father with mail and writing papers. During World War II, the Bohr family fled to Sweden to avoid the Nazis. Shortly afterwards, Aage and his father went to England. During this time, Aage was acting as his father's assistant and secretary, sharing his father's research. In August 1945, they both returned to Denmark, and Aage resumed his studies, obtaining a master's degree in the following year with a thesis on some aspects of atomic stopping problems. In 1948, Aage joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and from there went to Columbia University, where he discussed a newly discovered effect in the hyperfine structure of deuterium with I. Bohr, Niels (1885-1962)

Danish physicist who proposed a successful quantum model of the atom in 1913. His model assumed that (1) the electron exists at precise distances from the nucleus, (2) as long as an electron remains in one location, no energy is given off, (3) electrons have circular orbits (this is only correct for s orbitals), and (4) the angular momenta associated with allowed electron motion are integral multiples of . Bohr stated the Correspondence Principle, which states that quantum mechanical formulas must reduce to the classical results in the limit of large quantum number. He also advocated a probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics known as the Copenhagen interpretation Bohr (Aage) Bohr (Christian) Bohr (Harald)

Mottelson and James Rainwater for their work in determining the asymmetrical shapes of certain atomic nuclei. Bohr was educated at the University of Copenhagen, where he received his doctorate in 1954. During the 1940s he worked as assistant to his father, Niels Bohr (1922 Nobel physics laureate), on the development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, N.M. From 1946 he was associated with the Niels Bohr Institute of Theoretical Physics, founded in Copenhagen by his father, whom he succeeded as director from 1963 to 1970. From experiments inspired by the theories of James Rainwater and conducted in collaboration with Ben R. Mottelson in the early 1950s, Bohr discovered that the motion of subatomic particles can distort the shape of the nucleus, thus challenging the widely accepted theory that all nuclei are perfectly spherical. This discovery was important for the understanding and development of nuclear fusion. Bohr's writings include Rotational States of Atomic Nuclei (1954) and Nuclear Structure

He studied at the Univ. of Copenhagen (Ph.D. 1911) and carried on research on the structure of the atom at Cambridge under Sir James J. Thomson and at Manchester under Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1916, Bohr became professor of theoretical physics at the Univ. of Copenhagen, and in 1920 he was made director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he was instrumental in founding. Rutherford had discovered the nucleus of the atom in 1911, but classical theory was unable to explain the stability of the nuclear model of the atom. Bohr provided the solution to this problem in 1913, when he postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits and explained the manner in which the atom absorbs and emits energy. He thus combined the

Bohr, Aage Niels I was born in Copenhagen on June 19, 1922, as the fourth son of Niels Bohr and Margrethe Bohr (née N?rlund). During my early childhood, my parents lived at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (now the Niels Bohr Institute), and the remarkable generation of scientists who came to join my father in his work became for us children Uncle Kramers, Uncle Klein, Uncle Nishina, Uncle Heisenberg, Uncle Pauli, etc. When I was about ten years old, my parents moved to the mansion at Carlsberg, where they were hosts for widening circles of scholars, artists, and persons in public life.
I went to school for twelve years at Sortedam Gymnasium (H. Adler's f?ellesskole) and am indebted to many of my teachers, both in the humanities and in the sciences, for inspiration and encouragement. I began studying physics at the University of Copenhagen in 1940 (a few months after the German occupation of Denmark). By that time, I had already begun to assist my father with correspondence, with his writing of articles of a general epistemological character, and gradually also in connection with his work in physics.
