Baruch S. Blumberg is a Distinguished Scientist at Fox Chase Cancer
Center, Philadelphia, and Professor of Medicine and Anthropology at the
University of Pennsylvania. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for
discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin and dissemination of
infectious diseases. After studying Physics and earning his MD and PhD
degrees, he joined the National Institutes of Health and later became the
Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Institute for Cancer Research.
While studying inherited protein differences related to disease susceptibility,
he discovered a protein that he subsequently showed to be on the surface
of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The discovery of the virus was the starting
point for a major growth of our knowledge of hepatitis B and later other hepatitis viruses. He invented diagnostic techniques for HBV that resulted in the control of

Barry Blumberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in the 1920’s, just before the economic depression in 1929. As a young boy he was particularly interested in science, and when his family moved to Queens he turned the basement of his parents house into a laboratory. At age 17, during the Second World War, he was enlisted into the Navy.  They sent him to do an accelerated two year physics degree before he was trained to become a Deck officer serving on small amphibious ships but he was fortunate not to be in war areas and enjoyed his experience. After the war Barry re-trained as a doctor.  He worked in a large New York Hospital before becoming interested in research.  After a spell doing his doctorate at Oxford University he returned to the United States and focused on basic research into ethnic diversity.  He was interested in how people differ to each other, why some people got sick and others didn’t, with particular reference to disease.

BENEFITS AND THREATS TO MANKIND
From Proceedings of the International Conference The Discovery of Polonium and Radium – Its Scientific and Philosophical . 17-20 September 1998, Warsaw, Poland
I am very pleased to have been invited to this historical meeting. I have been asked to speak on one of the important themes of the conference; the benefits and threats that are imposed by the scientific method. The scientific process involves both the solution of problems and the creation of problems. When a hypothesis is tested, a large amount of data is collected in order to validate or reject the stated hypothesis. This data, in turn, can be used to generate additional hypotheses, usually more than one. These new hypothesis, all or some of them, can also be tested, and more data is collected. This again leads to hypotheses, some of which can be tested, and the process can continue for an extended period until a sufficient number of hypotheses have been validated or rejected to complete the project. The scientist ends up with many answered questions, but even more questions and mysteries that are unanswered. Another important consequence has been the reduction in the incidence of primary cancer of the liver or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is one of the most common cancers; worldwide, it is the third most common cause of death from cancer in males and the seventh most common cause of death from cancer in females. About 85% of primary cancer of the liver is a consequence of chronic infection with HBV. In a study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations in Taiwan, carried out over a period of ten years, the incidence of HCC in the impacted population has decreased to one third of what it was prior to the vaccination program. If these observations are confirmed in subsequent studies, than it is likely that one of the world's most common cancers will be controlled.

Nobel laureate grew $20 million-a-year NASA Astrobiology Institute from the ground up since becoming first-ever director in 1999.
By Harvey Black National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Astrobiology Institute , told The Scientist yesterday that he would be stepping down in five months. Blumberg, who has held the post since 1999, said he will remain at NASA until the agency appoints a new director. Blumberg, who serves on the editorial advisory board of The Scientist , declined to say why he was leaving the position, but said he had other things he hoped to do and that he was stepping down "with regret." NASA officials, he said, have asked him to stay. There was no word on a replacement for Blumberg, although the Institute is already advertising for the post. Don Savage, a NASA spokesperson, said a search committee had been formed. Blumberg received his MD from Columbia University and a PhD in biochemistry from Oxford University. The

Scientific Advisory Board We are proud of our Scientific Advisory Board. Our founding Chairman until his death in November 2004 was Sir John Vane, a Nobel Laureate who co-discovered the molecule protacyclin, upon which much of our business is based. Click here for Martine Rothblatt's tribute to Sir John . The knowledge of our Scientific Advisory Board members is of immense value to us as we explore the use of prostacyclin-like molecules (such as Remodulin ) in cardiovascular conditions. , and Robert Bourge, MD, head of the world's largest pulmonary hypertension practice at University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center. The Scientific Advisory Board at United Therapeutics plays an important role. Fortunately for us, the caliber of the scientists on our Board are second to none in our missions of developing prostacyclin-like molecules and arginine supplementation for cardiovascular medicine and proving the usefulness of iminosugar compounds for safely treating serious infectious disease. 78. Baruch Blumberg
Well, these are the exact noble deeds of Dr. baruch blumberg, the 1976 Noble baruch blumberg is currently a visiting Professor in the Human Biology
http://www.stanford.edu/group/virus/hepadna/Blumberg.html
I magine the sense of accomplishment one would feel for preventing the death of millions of people by discovering something completely unprecedented. Imagine decreasing the incidence of a potentially debilitating disease from 15% to 1%, as was done in Taiwan, and practically eliminating it in others, as in the entire state of Alaska. Impossible right? Well, these are the exact noble deeds of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the 1976 Noble Prize winner for the discovery of the hepatitis B vaccine. After receiving a doctorate in biochemistry at Oxford University, Blumberg began his worldwide quest to understand the phenomena of genetic polymorphisms; the occurence in a population of more than one form of a gene at a frequency greater than mutation rate (1%). A perfect example of a polymorphism is that of sickle-cell anemia; Blumberg was interested in why or how certain selective pressures influenced the existence of the heterozygote (Hb S /Hb A ) versus the dominant (Hb A /Hb A ) and recessive (Hb S / Hb S ) phenotypes. He discovered the immense diverity of antigenic variants in the blood through isolation of the proteins by starch-gel electrophoresis and double diffusion in agar gel. One of the most fantastic of his findings was that of an antibody, in a hemophiliac who had received many blood transfusions, that reacted with the serum of an Australian Aborigine. This antigen in the Aborigine (Au) was found in a rather indirect fashion through electron microscopy and epidemiological studies to be the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBsAg). Because of the rapid association made between hepatitis and Au, the government instigated a mandatory testing of blood banks with Blumberg's Au test, and the incidence of post-trasfusion hepatitis declined from 18% to 6%. Blumberg continued the studies regarding the association between Au and hepatitis while at the National Institutes of Health and later the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
