    Bloembergen started to study Physics at Utrecht University in 1938. When the Second World War started it changed student life altogether. His professor was removed from the university and Bloembergen had to do with whatever lectures were still available supplemented by self-teaching.
    It was no surprise that after the liberation of the Netherlands, the young physicist set out for the United States as quickly as possible and worked at Harvard. For where in a ravaged and impoverished Europe could he at last do the doctoral thesis had been longing to do for years? He returned to Leiden in the Netherlands, where he wrote his dissertation Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation, a standard, often reprinted work on NMR. Bloembergen's at the time revolutionary NMR systems are today much used for medical purposes to examine internal organs and tissues.
    Later on in life he returned to the United States and studied Laser and Maser for which he received his Nobel Prize in 1981 with his colleagues Arthur Schwalow and the Swede Kai Siegbahn. 'In fact, what we did was quite simple', he said in the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant in 1990. 'We took a standard textbook on optics and for each section we asked ourselves what would happen if the intensity was to become very high. We were almost certain that we were bound to encounter an entirely new type of physics within the domain.'

    World Scientific Series in 20th Century Physics
    (ISSN: 1793-1207)
    The 20th Century has witnessed one of the most remarkable episodes in the history of man's changing perception of the universe. Following the advent of the revolutionary theories of relativity and quantum physics in the early part of the century, scientific research has rushed onwards at an almost bewildering speed. Theoretical developments like quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics, chaos, superconductivity, big bang cosmology, and superstrings have raced forward to keep pace with new technologies like the increasingly sophisticated particle accelerators, supercomputers, laser technologies, and satellite observatories. The scientific ideas and techniques of today would have been inconceivable to physicists of the 19th Century, so much has the paradigm of scientific thinking been altered. To provide an important historical perspective of and insight into the breathtaking scientific developments of this century, we present here the

    The background ... Born in Dordrecht , the Netherlands , in 1920 , he came to Harvard University after Word War II ., to complete his doctoral thesis research on nuclear magnetic resonance. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1951 , and was named Gordon McKay Professor on Applied Physics in 1957. He later became the Rumford Professor of Physics , and in 1980 he was named Gerhard Gade University Professor at Harvard , retaining his position in the division of applied sciences. In the 1950s , Bloembergen pioneered the developement of the three-level solid state laser. After the laser was developed , his research interests turned to nonlinear optics. His theoretical work , which laid the groundwork for the field , was first publicated in the early 1960s and summarized in his book Nonlinear Optics in 1965. That work also led to developement of techniques for extremely high resolution laser spectroscopy. He received the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics " for the developement of laser spectroscopy " , sharing it with fellow laser researcher Arthur L. Schawlow and with Kai Siegbahn of Uppsala University in Sweden , who pioneered electron spectroscopy.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dr. Nicolaas Bloembergen, winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in physics, will present the L.H. Thomas Lecture at North Carolina State University at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28. Bloembergen's presentation "Nonlinear Optics: a Historical Perspective," will be held in Room 124, Dabney Hall. It is free and open to the public. A 3:30 p.m. reception precedes the talk. On Monday, NC State also is sponsoring a talk by Bloembergen at 9:30 a.m. to physics students at Enloe High School in Raleigh. Bloembergen, Harvard University professor emeritus, was awarded the Nobel prize for his contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy. A member of the Harvard faculty since 1949, his research has been concerned with nuclear and electron paramagnetic resonance, microwave masers and nonlinear optics. Among his numerous honors are the Lorentz Medal of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in 1978 and the National Medal of Science in 1974. The Thomas lectures, named in honor of Dr. L.H. Thomas, are sponsored annually by IBM and the Department of Physics at NC State University. Thomas, a distinguished mathematician and physicist, worked for many years at IBM and NC State before his death in 1992.

    Since the first laser was demonstrated in 1960, laser technology has grown to a commercial annual market which now exceeds six billion dollars. Lasers are used in worldwide optical fiber communication systems, in surgery and medicine, in recording and play-back of compact disks, and in the printing, materials processing, manufacturing and construction industries. Examples of laser applications which have a direct or indirect impact on the lives of many individuals are presented. Dr. Nicolaas Bloembergen is Gerhard Gade University Professor, Emeritus, at Harvard University. In 1991 he served as president of the American Physical Society. He is a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1981, the Lorentz Medal of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in 1978, the National Medal of Science, awarded by the President of the United States in 1974, the Medal of Honor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Frederic Ives Medal of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of various academies in the United States and abroad. In addition to his service on the faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University for four decades, he was also a visiting professor in Paris, Leiden, Bangalore, Munich, Berkeley, and Pasadena. Furthermore, Dr. Bloembergen has served on numerous advisory committees of U.S. Government agencies and of industrial and academic institutions. He is the author of two monographs;
