Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich
Basov, Nikolay Gennadiyevich Soviet physicist and Nobel Laureate. Basov helped to develop both the laser and the maser, for which he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics with Soviet physicist Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov and American physicist Charles Hard Townes. Basov, together with his teacher Prokhorov, conducted groundbreaking research in quantum mechanics, which concerns the behavior of atoms at different energy levels. They first deduced that quantum mechanics permits the amplification of microwaves and light waves by inducing atoms to release energy. This helped them construct the theoretical basis of the process now called microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, or, more commonly, maser. The maser quickly found many applications for its ability to send strong microwaves in any direction and resulted in improvements in radar. The maser also provided the basis for an atomic clock that was far more accurate than any mechanical timepiece ever invented. Basov later helped develop the visible-light maser, or laser , which delivers infrared or visible light instead of microwaves. Both the maser and the laser can collect and amplify energy waves hundreds of times. They can also produce a beam with almost perfectly parallel light waves and little or no interference or static.

    Robert D. Maurer Lecture 1998
Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Lectures on Lasers
Lasers have come a long way since the first ruby crystal in the 1960's, Nobel prize-winning physicist Nicolaas Bloembergen told a University of Arkansas audience Thursday night, translating into a $20 billion market today. "In the 1960's, it was considered a solution looking for a problem," Bloembergen said of the first laser development. "Now, it's different. Now there are many problems solved by lasers." Bloembergen, professor emeritus at Harvard, pioneered work on nuclear magnetic resonance with Edward Purcell and Robert Pound, as well as development of energy transfer schemes. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1981 for his work on nonlinear spectroscopy and optics. Bloembergen spoke to a full house in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main. His presentation, "Lasers: Physics Impacting Your Life" was part of the Robert D. Maurer Lecture Series, named after the physics department alumnus and inventor of the first telecommunications-grade optical fiber. The lecture was sponsored by the physics department. The word "laser," Bloembergen explained, is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." Because of the nature of the light amplification process, he said, light rays go in the same direction at the same frequency, and a coherent phenomenon occurs. Lasers have some common characteristics, including a high chromaticity (of color and wavelength), directionality (relating to direction in space), and high intensity and power. With the directional quality of lasers, he noted, distances such as from the Earth to the moon can be measured to within one inch of accuracy. On a large scale, they can be used to see changes in distance from one point on the Earth to another, detecting possible shifts in tectonic plates. On a smaller scale, they can be used to align underground or underwater pipelines and tunnels, such as the tunnel under San Francisco Bay.

"Laser Technology in Peace and War " Prof. Nicolaas Bloembergen is a Professor for Physics who received the Nobel Prize for Physics for his contributions to the development of laser spectroscopy in 1981. He was born in the Netherlands in 1920, studied at the University of Utrecht and obtained the Phil.Drs. degree in 1943. After the 2nd World War he came to America and started to work at Harvard University in the field of nuclear and electron paramagnetic resonance, later in quantum electronics, microwave masers, non-linear optics - of which he is one of the founders - and lasers. This started a lifelong association with Harvard which continues to the present day.
In 1948 Nicolaas Bloembergen returned briefly to Holland to receive the Ph.D. degree from the University of Leiden for his thesis on nuclear magnetic relaxation which became the classic Bloembergen, Pound and Purcell Paper (BPP) in the Physical Review of 1949.

After surviving World War II in Holland, he came to America in the spring of 1946, walked into Professor Edward Purcell's office at Harvard University and requested the opportunity to do graduate work in the emerging field of nuclear magnetic resonance. This fateful step started a lifelong association with Harvard which continues to the present day. It also set the future pattern for his scientific work, which began with magnetic resonance and evolved in a natural way in quantum electronics, non-linear optics, and lasers.
