Bloch, Konrad (Emil) (szül. 1912. jan. 21. Neisse, Németország), német születésu amerikai biokémikus; 1964-ben Feodor Lynennel megosztva élettani-orvostudományi Nobel-díjat kaptak a zsírsavak és a koleszterin bioszintézisével kapcsolatos felfedezéseikért. 1934-ben vegyészmérnöki diplomát szerzett a müncheni Technische Hochschuléban. HISTORICAL NOTE
Science Service was established in 1920 through the efforts of E. W. Scripps in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), and the National Research Council (NRC). In 1919 Scripps had established the American Society for the Dissemination of Science. Unknown to Scripps, the three major scientific organizations were trying to agree on a format and establish a popular science journal. In 1920 Scripps met with representatives of the AAAS, NAS, and NRC in an attempt to pool resources. Out of that meeting came Science Service, a news service designed to popularize science and to disseminate scientific knowledge. Edwin E. Slosson (1865-1929), chemist, journalist, and editor of the Independent, was appointed first Editor of Science Service in 1921, a post he held until his death. Watson Davis (1896-1967) was appointed Managing Editor of Science Service in 1921, and became Editor of the Science News Letter in 1922. After Slosson's death, Davis assumed the duties of Director, 1929-1966.

konrad bloch (1912). Germanborn American biochemist who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Feodor Lynen for their discoveries
http://reality-sites.org/people/konrad-bloch.htm
Konrad Bloch
German-born American biochemist who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Feodor Lynen for their discoveries concerning the natural synthesis of cholesterol and of fatty acids.
After receiving a chemical engineering degree at the Technische Hochschule, Munich, in 1934, Bloch went to Switzerland and then to the United States. At Columbia University (Ph.D., 1938) he became a research associate of Rudolf Schoenheimer in the isotopic analysis of cell metabolism. After teaching at the University of Chicago (1946-54), Bloch became professor of biochemistry at Harvard, continuing his research on lipids, especially the unsaturated fatty acid components. He was named emeritus professor in 1982. In 1942 Bloch and David Rittenberg discovered that the two-carbon compound acetic acid was the major building block in the 30 or more steps in the biosynthesis (natural formation) of cholesterol, a waxlike alcohol found in animal cells. In his search to determine how acetic acid molecules combine in this process, Bloch was also joined by Feodor Lynen and his collaborators in Munich and Sir John Warcup Cornforth and George Popjak in England. Their discovery facilitated medical research on the relation of blood cholesterol levels to atherosclerosis; research in physiology; and research on the chemistry of terpenes, rubber, and other isoprene derivatives.
