Bloch, Konrad Konrad E. Bloch was born on 21st January 1912, in Neisse, Upper Silesia, then Germany, the son of Fritz Bloch and his wife Hedwig, née Striemer. He attended the elementary school and the Real gymnasium in the same city and in 1930 went to Munich to study chemistry at the Technische Hochschule. He became soon attracted to organic chemistry, especially the structure of natural products, an interest which he owed in large measure to the inspired teaching of Hans Fischer. Another influential experience was to attend the Sessions of the Münchener Chemische Gesellschaft and to hear the great organic chemists of the time, Adolph Windaus, Heinrich Wieland and Rudolf Willstatter report their researches on steroids, porphyrins and enzymes.
For racial reasons his studies in Munich ended in 1934 after he had obtained the degree of Diplom-Ingenieur in Chemistry. Leaving Germany Bloch was fortunate to find a temporary position at the Schweizerische Forschungsinstitut in Davos, Switzerland. His assignment there was to investigate the phospholipids of tubercle bacilli, his first exposure to biochemical research.
In 1954 Bloch was appointed Higgins Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Harvard University, and in 1968 he became Chairman of the Department. Apart from continuing research on various aspects of terpene and sterol biogenesis, he has become interested in the enzymatic formation of unsaturated fatty acids and more recently in various aspects of biochemical evolution.

Lynen, Feodor (Felix Konrad)
German biochemist who investigated the synthesis of cholesterol in the human body and the metabolism of fatty acids. For this work he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Konrad Bloch
Lynen was born and educated in Munich, where he spent his whole career, becoming professor 1953 and director of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Chemistry (later Biochemistry) 1954.
Lynen in Munich and Bloch in the USA corresponded and worked out the 36 steps involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. Bloch found that the basic unit is the simple acetate (ethanoate) ion, a chemical fragment containing only two carbon atoms. In 1951, Lynen found the carrier of this fragment. Bloch then found an intermediate compound, squalene - a long hydrocarbon containing 30 carbon atoms. The final stage was the transformation of the carbon chain of squalene into the four-ring molecule of cholesterol.
Lynen also worked on the biosynthesis of fatty acids, isolating from yeast an enzyme complex that acts as a catalyst in the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids from acetyl coenzyme A and malonyl coenzyme A. He also elucidated a series of energy-generating reactions that occur when fatty acids from food are respired to form carbon dioxide and water.

Konrad Bloch, Nobel winner, dies at 88
Konrad Emil Bloch (Staff photo by Jane Reed) Konrad Emil Bloch, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1964, died Sunday, Oct. 15, at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. He died of complications from congestive heart failure at age 88. Bloch shared the Nobel prize for his work on how cholesterol is made in the body. Dean Jeremy R. Knowles called him "a marvelously perceptive biochemist and a wise, generous, and cultivated man who forged the connections between chemistry and biochemistry. He was one of that distinguished line of European biochemists whose deep understanding of metabolism laid the chemical foundations of today's biology." Bloch was born in Neisse, Germany, in 1912 and came to the United States in 1936. Two years previously he was studying chemistry at the Technische Hochschule in Munich when Nazi authorities told him, in line with new racial laws, that he must end his studies. Bloch left Germany and went to Davos, Switzerland, to work in a tuberculosis sanitarium. In 1936, however, his residential permit was about to expire without any chance of renewal. On a hope and prayer, he wrote to John Anderson, a colleague and a biochemistry professor at Yale, asking for help.

Konrad (Emil) Bloch was a German-born American biochemist who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Feodor Lynen for their discoveries concerning the natural synthesis of cholesterol and of fatty acids. Bloch identified the chemical process by which the body turns acetic acid into cholesterol. He discovered the point at which it is possible to regulate the amount of cholesterol the body produces. He discovered that high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream cause fatty deposits on the inner walls of arteries, which may lead to constricted blood flow and increase the chances of blood clotting and heart attack.

KAPLAN, V., G. B. BUCKLAR, and K. E. BLOCH. Noninvasive Monitoring of Cardiac Output during Exercise by Inductance Cardiography. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 35, No. 5, pp. 747-752, 2003. Introduction/Purpose: Inductance cardiography is a noninvasive technique that monitors changes in cardiac output from an inductance plethysmographic transducer encircling the chest at the level of the heart. The method has been previously validated in supine patients at rest by comparisons to thermodilution. Our purpose was to investigate whether the technique can be employed during bicycle exercise. Methods: We simultaneously measured cardiac output by inductance cardiography and by two gas exchange methods based on the Fick principle during upright cycle ergometry in healthy volunteers. Results: In 11 subjects, comparisons of changes in cardiac output by inductance cardiography agreed well with values measured by carbon dioxide rebreathing during a steady-state exercise protocol. In 12 subjects, cardiac output changes measured by inductance cardiography and an oxygen uptake method agreed closely during a progressive ramp exercise protocol to exhaustion. The bias (mean difference to reference methods) and limits of agreement (+/-2 SD of bias) for estimation of relative changes in cardiac output by inductance cardiography were 1% +/- 21% in 67 comparisons to the carbon dioxide rebreathing technique, and 0% +/- 22% in 98 comparisons to the oxygen uptake method.
