Travel New York City December 2003 NYU School of Medicine Faculty Member Receives France's Highest Scientific Honor The French Academy of Sciences selected Dr. David Sabatini as the recipient of its highest honor for 2003, the Grande Medaille D'Or (the Grand Gold Medal), in recognition of his scientific contributions to Cell Biology. Previous recipients of the Medal include many illustrious scientists, such as Louis Pasteur, Pierre and Marie Curie, Gustave Eiffel, and Henri Poincare. The Grande Medaille was presented to Dr. Sabatini at a formal ceremony held in Paris under the Grand Coupole of the Institut de France. The Medal is given every year to a French or foreign scientist working in one of the many disciplines represented in the Academy, which include the mathematical, physical, chemical, natural, biological and biomedical sciences. The award recognizes a decisive contribution to science in one of these areas and emphasizes the originality of the discoveries, their international impact, and the awardee's role in creating a true school of research. The rules of the Academy stipulate that the work of the recipient of the medal must have been carried out in an important area of fundamental research, and must have resulted in new insights and a greater understanding of the discipline in which the award was given.

Science Heavyweights To Hit Palm Beach
They have coaxed apart strands of human DNA, deciphered brain- cell communication and cracked the genetic riddles behind high cholesterol and some cancers. A who's-who of scientific inquiry arrives in Palm Beach next week as The Scripps Research Institute holds the first Florida meeting of its Board of Scientific Governors. Nine Nobel laureates are expected among the group, which advises Scripps President Richard Lerner on where to direct the institute's mental might. Their meeting will culminate Thursday night when Gov. Jeb Bush hosts a reception at The Breakers for both the scientists and the public officials charged with oversight of the state's half- billion-dollar investment for Scripps' venture in Palm Beach County. While the scientists debate cell metabolism vs. brain chemistry, the nine-member board overseeing the state's investment will sign off on a contract requiring Scripps to guarantee job creation and a steady flow of research money into the state.

Summary:
Membranes are impermeable to proteins. Essentially, proteins are synthesized in only one of the cellular compartments, the cytoplasm (although a few are synthesized in the mitoplasm of mitochondria and the chloroplasm of chloroplasts). How are newly synthesized proteins directed to their proper membranes and compartments? And how do these relatively large molecules traverse the compartmental membranes without destroying the essential gradients of small molecules and ions that exist across each of these membranes? How are membrane proteins integrated into membranes such that each member of a given species of membrane protein exhibits precisely the same domains on the cis side and the trans side of the membrane? Of particular interest is that PCCs are also used for the integration of membrane proteins into the lipid bilayer. Accordingly, the PCC is predicted to reversibly open in two dimensions, with opening across the membrane triggered by the signal sequence, and opening to the lipid bilayer triggered by the "stop-transfer" sequence of the translocating membrane protein. Hence the PCC, which is able to respond to sequence information in the translocating chain, is more than merely a passive conduit.
