by Wayne Jackson
Christian Courier: Penpoints
Monday, November 29, 1999 The Meaning of Evolution, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1949, p. 293). The professor spoke more than he knew! The Human Body: Accident or Design? A zip code system! The disciples of Darwin do! For his discovery, Dr. Blobel has been awarded a prize of $960,000. He has stated that he plans to donate the money for the rebuilding of a church, and also a synagogue, in Germany, both of which were destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. I mention this to call attention to the fact that one reasonably may conclude that Dr. Gunter Blobel is not an atheist. Comment on this page

Scripps Research Scientific Board Meets in Florida
The Scripps Research Institute's Board of Scientific Governors convened last week for the first time in Palm Beach County, Florida, where a new Scripps Research campus is planned. "Members of the scientific board were engaged and thoughtful in discussions about how best to approach the new Florida operations," says Keith McKeown, vice president of communications and public relations. "They were eager to learn about the opportunities in Florida and to help the institute with their ideas and suggestions." In the meeting last Thursday and Friday at the Breakers hotel in Palm Beach, the group heard presentations from Scripps Research scientists. Professor Peter Schultz, Scripps Family Chair who is also member of The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research and director of the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, spoke on his lab's work on adding a 21st amino acid to organisms. Professor Steve Kay spoke on his lab's research on circadian rhythms. Professor Charles Weissman, who was recently appointed head of Scripps Florida science, spoke on his work on prion disease, a timely topic given the recent identification of mad cow disease in the United States.

Scripps Research scientists in Florida will first be working at FAU's Boca Raton campus, then at FAU's Jupiter campus, while permanent facilities are being built. Construction of the new facilities is scheduled to be complete in late 2006.

Although this work has long been known in molecular biology, it is worth
noting that all of the details of the "postal service" of the eukaryotic
cell were already present in the first metazoan organism, since the
progenitor of both plant and animal cells was already equipped with the
complete postal delivery system (as well as all of the other complexitites
of molecular biology). This means whatever molecular biological evolution
that has occurred would have to have occurred prior to the Cambrian, where
there is no physical evidence for its occurrence. Just a thought.

Professor G¼nter Blobel was born in Waltersdorf, Germany, on 21 May 1936.
CAREER
He was awarded a medical degree from the University of T¼bigen in 1960, and a doctoral degree in oncology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1967. He was appointed to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1986. Professor Blobel was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery that newly synthesized proteins contain "address tags" which direct them to the proper location within the cell. This is known as protein targeting. Professor Blobel currently holds a position at the Rockefeller University, New York, and, since August 2001, he has been a member of the Nestl© Nutrition Council (NNC), a group of international experts who advise Nestl© on nutrition.

The Federation of Young Scientists (in Swedish "Förbundet Unga Forskare", organized its forst SIYSS program with inspiration from the United States Science Service and with help from the Nobel Foundation. In 1999 there were 30 participants from 17 different countries. The students are introduced to Swedish science and research ant to Swedish culture and history. The participants in SIYSS are selected in different ways. Some ofthem are winners of the National Science Fairs which are held in many of the participating countries, others are selected as the best students of their universities or representatives of organizations corresponding to the Swedish Federation of Young Scientists.
