Sir James, in exploring the nature of histamine receptors, also made discoveries arising from his studies relating to the structure of the histamine molecule. He developed substances, including cimetidine (1975), that reduce the production of gastric acid by blocking the histamine 2 receptors; these medicines, used to treat peptic ulcers, have reduced the number of surgeries performed to treat the condition.
