J. Michael Bishop (born 1936) is an American immunologist and microbiologist who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Bishop was born in Pennsylvania . He attended Gettysburg College as an undergraduate, then earned an MD from Harvard University in 1962. He began his career working for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases , a part of the National Institutes of Health . He then spent a year working for the Heinrich-Pette Institute in Hamburg Germany before joining the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco . Bishop has remained on the school's faculty since 1968, and has been chancellor of the university since 1998. Bishop is best known for his Nobel-winning work on retroviral oncogenes . Working with Harold E. Varmus in the , he discovered the first human oncogene. Their findings allowed the understanding of how malignant tumors are formed from changes to the normal genes of a cell. These changes can be produced by viruses, by radiation, or by exposure to some chemicals. Retrieved from " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Michael_Bishop

Eyes on the Prize
David Cantor How to Win the Nobel Prize: An Unexpected Life in Science . J. Michael Bishop. xvi + 271 pp. Harvard University Press, 2003. $27.95. click for full image and caption How to Win the Nobel Prize: part autobiography, part history of science and part intervention in current debates about science. Its aims are to inspire (future) scientists, to educate the public about science and to combat science's critics. Bishop has some good points to make, but this volume sends out contradictory messages. Bishop is clearly concerned about the extent to which the rewards of science may corrupt the field; but he is also worried about the extent to which scientists ignore the political reality of science's dependence on public support, and the genuine anxieties that ordinary men and women have about scientific activities. Fearful of outside control, he argues against greater political influence over science, while he simultaneously urges his fellow scientists to engage with their political masters.

14 December 1998 UCSF CHANCELLOR J. MICHAEL BISHOP AWARDED AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CELL BIOLOGY PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD, PRESENTED BY MAYOR BROWN J. Michael Bishop, MD, Chancellor of UC San Francisco, was awarded The American Society for Cell Biology Public Service Award on Sunday, December 13, at the society’s annual meeting in San Francisco. The award was presented by Mayor Willie Brown. A key voice on national policy issues related to science education and scientific research, Bishop was cited by the American Society for Cell Biology for his service to the Society, of which he is a former president, to the Joint Steering Committee for Public Policy (JSC), and for his contributions on the national level. The JSC is a coalition of four basic biomedical research societies representing more than 20,000 researchers in the fields of genetics, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and biophysics. The JSC was formed in 1990 to bring scientists together to advocate for federal funding for basic biomedical research. Bishop is the fifth recipient of the ASCB award. The previous recipients are Representative George Gekas (R-PA), in 1997; Marc Kirschner, PhD, the Carl W. Walter Professor of Cell Biology and Chair of the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, in 1996; Representative John Porter (R-IL), in 1995; and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), in 1994.

16 June 2004 UCSF Chancellor J. Michael Bishop receives honorary Harvard degree J. Michael Bishop, MD, chancellor of UCSF, received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Harvard University at the school's commencement ceremony June 10. Bishop was recognized for his pioneering cancer research, leadership in the national scientific community and inspired teaching. Other recipients of honorary degrees at Harvard's commencement included Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations; acclaimed novelist Margaret Atwood; and ballerina and ballet director Suzanne Farrell. Bishop, who is also University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UCSF, shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Harold Varmus for their discovery that normal cellular genes can be converted to cancer genes. The discovery transformed the way scientists look at cancer and has led to new strategies for the detection and treatment of the disease. In recognition of this research, Bishop and Varmus also received the 1982 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the 1984 Alfred P. Sloan Jr. Prize from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation and the 1984 Gairdner Foundation International Award.
