J. Michael Bishop By Rick Malaspina
UC Office of the President Nobel laureate J. Michael Bishop, one of the world's foremost medical researchers and a leading advocate for science education and increased public investment in scientific research, was named chancellor of the University of California's San Francisco campus earlier this month. Acting on the recommendation of UC President Richard C. Atkinson, the UC Board of Regents appointed Bishop, a longtime member of the UCSF faculty, during a meeting conducted by teleconference. The appointment is effective July 1. Bishop, 61, will become the eighth person to lead UCSF in its 134-year history. It is the only one of UC's nine campuses devoted exclusively to the health sciences. "I am delighted that Dr. Bishop will serve as UCSF's next chancellor," Atkinson said. "He brings to the position international renown and a sterling record of accomplishment in research. He also is an inspirational and award-winning teacher, an eloquent spokesman for the university, and a highly effective fundraiser. Dr. Bishop's unique strengths and insight assure that UCSF will continue to excel as one of the world's premier health sciences centers." Regents' Chairman Meredith J. Khachigian said of Bishop, "His extraordinary academic and scientific credentials, combined with his exuberance and affinity for UCSF and the San Francisco community, make him an outstanding leader for this stellar campus."

April 14, 2003 Nobel laureate J. Michael Bishop to give talk on cancer research on April 17 By Tim Stephens
Nobel laureate J. Michael Bishop, chancellor of UC San Francisco and a leading cancer researcher, will give a public talk at UCSC on Thursday, April 17.
J. Michael Bishop directs the G. W. Hooper Research Foundation at UCSF, which conducts multidisciplinary research on human disease. Bishop's talk, entitled "Cancer: The Rise of the Genetic Paradigm," will start at 4 p.m. in the Stage Room at the Colleges Nine/Ten Dining Commons. There will be a reception immediately after the lecture.
Bishop's talk is the third annual Sinsheimer Distinguished Lecture in Biology, sponsored this year by the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology. The event is free and open to the public. Designated parking for this event is in the North Residential Lot, with shuttle service to the event site.
Bishop is one of the world's foremost medical researchers and an award-winning teacher. He shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in medicine/physiology with Harold Varmus, now president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. They won the award for discovering that normal cells contain genes that can cause cancer if they malfunction. Their discovery is widely credited with sparking a revolution in cancer research.

SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives July
Hour Two: Chromosome 7 / J. Michael Bishop - 'How to Win the Nobel Prize'
Researchers this week reported that they have completed the sequencing of chromosome 7 in the human genome. It's the largest of the chromosomes sequenced so far, and scientists believe that it contains genetic code with links to deafness, cystic fibrosis, B-cell lymphoma and other cancers. The chromosome has chromosome has about 1,150 genes and 940 'pseudogenes,' regions that appear similar to genes but are inactivated for some reason. We'll talk about the project to decode chromosome 7, and what it might mean for biological and medical research. Then, we'll turn our attention to past ground-breaking biological science, and a conversation with J. Michael Bishop, co-winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Bishop shared the award with Harold Varmus "for their discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes." The work has helped shape scientists' understanding of mechanisms for cancer tumor development. We'll talk with Bishop about his work, his life in science since then, and his new book, "How to Win the Nobel Prize." Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (3-4 Eastern), and share your opinions online in our

They lost to Oakland in four games, with Mike and Harold due to open the fifth. Plagues and People 'Opening the black box of cancer' in Chapter 4 is a similar condensed guide to the history of understanding oncogenes and carcinogens, including the moment when Dominique Stehelin, alone in the lab one Saturday night, discovered c- src . Only footnote 27 refers to the disappointment, not to say anger, felt by Stehelin at his omission from the Nobel lineup, and Bishop, perhaps understandably, discusses the matter only obliquely. We will not know the committee's evidence or thoughts for another 38 years, when the 50-year period of confidentiality expires.

Autobiography "And what have kings that privates have not too,
Save ceremony, save general ceremony?" William Shakespeare, in Henry the Fifth, IV.
My youth held little forecast of a career in biomedical research. I was born on February 22, 1936, in York, Pennsylvania, and spent my childhood in a rural area on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. Those years were pastoral in two regards: I saw little of metropolitan life until I was past the age of twenty-one; and my youth was permeated with the concerns of my father's occupation as a Lutheran minister, tending to two small parishes. My most tangible legacy from then is a passion for music, sired by the liturgy of the church, fostered by my parents through piano, organ, and vocal lessons. I am deeply grateful for the legacy, albeit apostate from the church. I obtained eight years of elementary education in a two-room school, where I encountered a stern but engaging teacher who awakened my intellect with instruction that would seem rigorous today in many colleges. History figured large in the curriculum, exciting for me what was to become an enduring interest. But I heard little of science, and what I did hear was exemplified by the collection and pressing of wild flowers. My high school was also small: eighty students graduated with me, few of whom eventually completed college. Tests conducted before I graduated predicted a future for me in journalism, forestry, or the teaching of music; persons who know me well could recognize some truth in those seemingly errant prognoses.

BISHOP MICHAEL JOSEPH KANIECKI, S.J. Served as Bishop: 1985-2000 (born 1935-2000)
The day after he was consecrated a bishop, he stood next to Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan at the Fairbanks International Airport. He was a pilot for over 35 years. His coat of arms carries an airplane propeller and the motto: "TO LOVE AND TO SERVE." As Bishop of Fairbanks, on wing and on wheel, he traveled far and wide throughout his 409,849 square mile missionary diocese, conferring the Sacrament of Holy Orders on men, both Native and white, and the Sacrament of confirmation on countless young and old, blessing new churches, meeting and greeting, loving and serving the widely scattered flocks entrusted to his pastoral care. And it was while loving and serving one of his remote flocks in the bush Alaska that the Lord he loved and served above all called him out of this life. Michael Kaniecki was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 13, 1935. Already as a young boy he felt called to the priesthood. He was however, at the time drawn also to an outdoor, wilderness lifestyle, having spent a good part of his youth in northern Michigan and in northern Canada hunting, fishing and trapping. (In more recent years he hunted only with a camera.) As he neared the end of his high school years, he found himself facing a kind of dilemma: to lead the life of a priest? or a more outdoor type of life?. Then he was granted a scholarship to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. However, he failed to pass the physical, needed to have surgery, had to wait a year. During that year he learned about Alaska and its challenges, and saw that therein lay the answer to his dilemma. In Alaska he could serve as a priest and at the same time live in an environment so very much in keeping with his natural inclinations.

Bishop Michael J. Hoban
Bishop Michael J. Hoban Outstanding as had been the feats of the founding prelate, his successor earned for himself a similar reputation. Bishop Michael J. Hoban, a native of the Diocese and first pastor of Saint Leo's Parish in Ashley, had assumed the office of Coadjutor to Bishop O'Hara on March 22, 1896, the day of his Episcopal Ordination. On February 3, 1899, he became the Ordinary of the Diocese. The next twenty-seven years were years of achievement. In the interim, the Diocese had grown to include 341 priests, 202 parishes, nine teaching orders of sisters, five communities of sisters with specialized apostolates, 65 parochial schools, three colleges, and four custodial institutions. But important as were those material successes, his spiritual accomplishments were perhaps even greater. Ethnic problems, not of his own making, brought schism to Northeastern Pennsylvania. His charitable and judicious approach, however, stemmed the tide and prevented far worse effects from occurring. It had been a difficult task. His death on November 13, 1926, marked the end of an era. Main History Page
