Bethe was invited to work on the Manhattan Project, developing the atomic bomb, and he was skeptical about whether it could be built, but he felt he owed it to his adopted homeland. He was named head of project's Theoretical Division, and they designed a bomb that did indeed work. Upon seeing the effects of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, Bethe immediately became an activist for nuclear disarmament. He wrote of the futility of the so-called "Star Wars" missile defense system, and worked with the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, the Federation of American Scientists, and the Union of Concerned Scientists. He left Germany in when the Nazis came to power, moving first to England and in to the USA where he taught at Cornell University . During World War II , he served as part of a special summer session at the University of California, Berkeley at the invitation of Robert Oppenheimer , which outlined the first designs for the atomic bomb . When Oppenheimer started the secret weapons design laboratory, Los Alamos , he appointed Bethe as Director of the Theoretical Division. After the war, Bethe argued that a crash project for the hydrogen bomb should not be attempted, though after President Truman announced the beginning of such a crash project, and the outbreak of the Korean War , he signed up and played a key role in the weapon's development. A Nobel Laureate, he was Professor emeritus at Cornell University, where he had been ever since 1935. Among many outstanding discoveries, he was especially noted for his discovery of the nuclear processes that fuel the stars. With him, a remarkable and extraordinary age; the golden age of physics and the atomic age, finally passes into history. When I heard this news, I got a sinking feeling in my heart, and immediately wanted to write about him to 'get it out of my system'. He was one of my favourite scientists. It is strange what impact unrelated people from past ages and faraway places make on you. Frankly, I was awaiting this news for some time now (you have to be realistic; he was in his nineties). Strangely, even though the news is quite saddening, it fills me with the kind of pensive peace that fills you upon hearing about an inevitability. I am not a physicist. But as a student of the history of physics, here's my humble two cents...my tribute to this great man.
