Hans_Bethe.jpg Hans Bethe Hans Albrecht Bethe (pronounced Bay-tuh July 2 March 6 ), was a German American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for for his discovery of stellar nucleosynthesis . During World War II , he was head of the Theoretical Division at the secret Los Alamos laboratory developing the first atomic bombs . His team worked out the critical mass of uranium-235 necessary to sustain the fission reaction that would enable the bomb to explode. The first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity site in the Jornada del Muerto Desert southwestern United States , on 16 July . Witnessing it, Bethe claimed concern only for the smooth running of the test and was not concerned with the implications for the world. "I am not a philosopher ," he explained. He also played an important role in the development of the larger hydrogen bomb in the early . Bethe later campaigned together with Albert Einstein in the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists against nuclear testing and the nuclear arms race . He influenced the White House to sign the ban of atmospheric nuclear tests in and Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty SALT I ) in Contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

Mission Web Master's Note: My mother, while working as an RN at the Los Alamos Engineer's Hospital, remembers Hans Bethe as a patient and how he would have his bed covered with reams of paper while working continuously on calculations. I had the occasion to speak with Dr. Bethe's secretary at Cornell University during the late summer of 2001 and she informed me that Professor Bethe still comes into his office a couple of times a week. I think it's difficult to make clear to the non-physicist the beauty of how it fits together, of how you can build a world picture, and the beauty that the laws of physics are immutable."

The Bruce Medalists Photo at PBS Online Hans Albrecht Bethe 2 July 1906 2001 Bruce Medalist 6 March 2005 Hans Bethe was born in Strassburg, Germany (now Strasbourg , France). He studied at the Universities of Frankfurt and Munich , where he earned his Ph.D. under Arnold Sommerfeld in 1928. He made important contributions to the theories of electrons in crystals, the negative hydrogen ion, and the passage of charged particles through matter and wrote major review articles on one-and-two electron atoms and electrons in metals before leaving Germany in 1933 for England. There he began working in nuclear physics, and he and Rudolph Peierls developed the theoretical model of the deuteron shortly after its discovery. Bethe was at Cornell University Edward Teller , produced a major paper on shock waves. From 1943 - 46 Bethe headed the theoretical group at Los Alamos , where the first nuclear bomb was designed and built. After the war he worked on nuclear matter and meson theory and was the first to explain the Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom in an early and important contribution to quantum electrodynamics. He was an important advisor to government agencies on both defence and energy policies, and wrote widely about arms control and the need for new energy policies. After his official retirement he returned to astrophysics, and he continued to do research on solar neutrinos, supernovae, neutron stars, black holes, and other problems in theoretical astrophysics into his late nineties.
