From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Hans Bethe Hans Albrecht Bethe (pronounced Bay-tuh July 2 March 6 ), was a German American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for for his discovery of stellar nucleosynthesis . During World War II , he was head of the Theoretical Division at the secret Los Alamos laboratory developing the first atomic bombs . His team worked out the critical mass of uranium-235 necessary to sustain the fission reaction that would enable the bomb to explode. The first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity site in the Jornada del Muerto Desert southwestern United States , on 16 July . Witnessing it, Bethe claimed concern only for the smooth running of the test and was not concerned with the implications for the world. "I am not a philosopher ," he explained. He also played an important role in the development of the larger hydrogen bomb in the early . Bethe later campaigned together with Albert Einstein in the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists against nuclear testing and the nuclear arms race . He influenced the White House to sign the ban of atmospheric nuclear tests in and Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty SALT I ) in

His father was the physiologist Albrecht Bethe . He was educated at the Goethe Gymnasium (1915-24),the University of Frankfurt am Main (1924-1926), where he studied for two years, then finished his studies at Munich (1926-1928). He obtained his Ph. D. in theoretical physics under Arnold Sommerfeld in 1928. He was then appointed instructor of physics at Frankfurt for one semester, at Stuttgart for another semester, finally becoming Privatdozent at the University of Munich in 1930, a position that he held for only three years. After the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Bethe emigrated to England in October 1933, holding a temporary position as lecturer at the University of Manchester (1933-1934) and at University of Bristol (1934-1935). In February 1935, he was appointed assistant professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was subsequently promoted to professor in 1937, a position he has held even since (as professor emeritus since 1975). Bethe subsequently became a U.S. citizen in 1941. During the World War II, Bethe worked on microwave radar at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then he served as director of theoretical physics of the

Bethe By courtesy of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (b. July 2, 1906, Strassburg, Ger. [now Strasbourg, France]), German-born American theoretical physicist who helped to shape classical physics into quantum physics and increased the understanding of the atomic processes responsible for the properties of matter and of the forces governing the structures of atomic nuclei. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1967 for his work on the production of energy in stars. Moreover, he was a leader in emphasizing the social responsibility of science. In 1939 Bethe calculated the Sun's energy production, which results from the fusion of four hydrogen atoms (each of mass 1.008) into one helium atom (mass 4.0039). No direct fusion is possible, but Bethe showed that the probabilities of the four steps of the "carbon cycle" can account for the energy output. A carbon isotope of mass 12 reacts successively with three hydrogen nuclei (protons) to form the nitrogen isotope of mass 15; energy is produced through the fusion of a fourth hydrogen nucleus to release a helium nucleus (alpha particle) and the original carbon isotope. Bethe became a U.S. citizen in 1941. At the beginning of World War II, Bethe had no U.S. clearance for military work. But, after reading in the

Strasbourg, France, July 2, 1906] Bethe's work has permeated modern physics and astrophysics. His early work on nuclear reactions in the 1930s explained how stars produce energy by nuclear fusion. In 1947 Bethe was among the several founders of quantum electrodynamics.
