Bergson's life was the quiet and uneventful one of a French professor, the chief landmarks in it being the publication of his four principal works, first, in , the Essai sur les donn©es imm©diates de la conscience (Time and Free Will), then Matiere et Memoire (Matter and Memory) in L'Evolution cr©atrice (Creative Evolution) in and finally " Les deux sources de la morale et de la religion " (The Two Sources of Morality and Religion) in edit

Next Henri Bergson’s The Creative Mind Henri Bergson’s The Creative Mind: An Introduction to Metaphysics (1946) is a collection of essays and lectures concerning the nature of intuition, explaining how intuition can be used as a philosophical method. Intuition is described as a method of 'thinking in duration' which reflects the continuous flow of reality. Bergson distinguishes between intuitive and conceptual thinking, explaining how intuition and intellect may be combined to produce a dynamic knowledge of reality. Bergson distinguishes between two forms of time: pure time and mathematical time. Pure time is real duration. Mathematical time is measurable duration. Real time is continuous and indivisible. Mathematical time is divisible into units or intervals which do not reflect the flow of real time. According to Bergson, real time cannot be analyzed mathematically. To measure time is to try to create a break or disruption in time. In order to try to understand the flow of time, the intellect forms concepts of time as consisting of defined moments or intervals. But to try to intellectualize the experience of duration is to falsify it. Real duration can only be experienced by intuition.

Bergson, Henri (1859-1941)
French philosopher and writer who popularized the idea of an , or creative force, at the heart of evolution, rather than a deterministic natural selection. Together with Hans Driesch in Germany, he advocated a return to a form of vitalism ('neovitalism') which, as Leonard Troland put it: ... asserts that the phenomena of life are not determined by law-abiding forces but by a form of activity the effects of which are unpredictable, ... chaotic and beyond the range of science.

Table of Contents
Citation: Henri Bergson. "Table of Contents", Creative Evolution , translated by Arthur Mitchell, Ph.D. New York: Henry Holt and Company (1911). Editors' Note: The jacket of a recent republication of this book described it as "the fullest expression of the philosopher's ideas about the problem of existence, propounding a theory of evolution completely distinct from those of earlier thinkers and scientists." We present it to supplement Mead's review of the book (1907) at the time of its original publication in French. During the summer quarter of the 1926-1927 academic year, Mead taught a course on Bergson's Philosophy. Student notes from this course can be found among the Mead Papers archived at the University of Chicago. The book, although lengthy, is written in four chapters. This, combined with our policy of presenting books chapter by chapter, results in large files averaging around 180KB. Please be patient with the unusually long download times.
