Carl Bosch
The chemist, engineer and industrialist Carl Bosch was born on August 27, 1874 in Cologne and died on April 26, 1940 in Heidelberg. (He was a nephew of Robert Bosch, who in 1866 established an enterprise in Stuttgart that was later to become the present-day Robert Bosch GmbH.) Carl Bosch; oil painting by Albert Haueisen, 1922 Carl Bosch was a man of many talents and interests. Aside from his work in chemical process technology and the management of a large corporation, he also cherished his passions for astronomy, biology, and mineralogy. Two astronomical observatories were constructed in the gardens of the mansion (unfortunately they have not survived); the generous layout of the mansion may have been designed to house the collections of beetles, butterflies, and minerals that Bosch amassed with such enthusiasm. Today, his insect collection is archived at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt/Main. In the basement of the house, Bosch installed a mechanical workshop and a chemistry laboratory for himself. The two-room library is the gem among the suite of stately rooms on the ground floor.
