Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo (born February 3 ) is a Roman Catholic bishop who received, together with Jos© Ramos Horta , the Nobel Peace Prize , for their work "towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor Bishop Carlos Belo (left) The fifth child of Domingos Vaz Filipe and Ermelinda Baptista Filipe, Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo was born in the village of Wailakama, near Vemasse, on the north coast of East Timor . His father, a schoolteacher, died two years later. His childhood years were spent in Catholic schools at Baucau and Ossu, before he proceeded to the Dare minor seminary, outside Dili , from which he graduated in . Leben und Werk
Belo wurde 1948 als f¼nftes Kind eines Bauern in Osttimor geboren, sein Vater starb zwei Jahre nach der Geburt. œber ein Armenstipendium erhielt er eine Schulausbildung an der ¶rtlichen Missionsschule und konnte 1962 in die Di¶zese der Hauptstadt Dili eintreten. Ab 1968 studierte er in Lissabon Philosophie und kam danach als Lehrer zur¼ck nach Osttimor. 1976 verlieŸ er nach der Invasion und Annexion durch Indonesien das Land und ging erst nach Macau und begann anschlieŸend das Studium der Theologie in Lissabon und Rom wurde er in Rom als Priester geweiht und ging nach Portugal . Ein Jahr sp¤ter kehrte er in seine Heimat zur¼ck. Obwohl international noch immer als nichtautonomes Territorium Portugals angesehen wurde Osttimor nach dem Ausruf zur Volksrepublik durch die marxistische Partei FRETILIN von den indonesischen Truppen besetzt gehalten. Aufst¤nde wurden unter massiven Einsatz von Gewalt einged¤mmt und bis zur Unabh¤ngigkeit 2002 sind mehr als 200.000 Osttimoresen gewaltsam get¶tet worden.
