Menachem Begin at Camp David in 1978 Menachem Begin Hebrew August 16 March 9 , 1992) became the 6th Prime Minister of Israel in May 1977. He negotiated the Camp David Accords with Egyptian president Muhammad Anwar al-Sadat, for which they jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. His greatest credit to the State of Israel was achieving the first peace treaty with Egypt and neutralizing Egypt's army . Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, a city then still in the Russian empire, which became part of Poland from 1919 to 1939 and is today a part of Belarus and known simply as Brest . From 1939, he was the leader of the Zionist Betar organization. In 1940-1941 he was imprisoned in the USSR . In 1941, following His release under the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement , he joined the Polish army of Anders, but was unofficially discharged from that army along with many other Jewish soldiers. Begin then moved to British-controlled Palestine , where he quickly made a name for himself as a fierce critic of mainstream Zionism and a proponent of the more radical Revisionist Zionism . In 1942 he joined the Irgun (also known as Etzel ) and in 1947 assumed its leadership. He was responsible for the bombing of

The Polish army teemed with murderous anti-Semites; one might think Wolf Dov would have been sympathetic to the Red Army, led by a Jew, Trotsky, and which fought the anti-Semites; but that was certainly not the case. As a capitalist of a sort, a religious dignitary and a Zionist, he abhorred them, and Menachem seems to have strongly incorporated these paternal values directly into his own superego. In all my life, I never met a more courageous man than him. It has been given to me almost all my life to work with people of courage, but I will never forget the way in which my father fought for the defense of Jewish dignity. Two years later, in 1925, he joined his first formal Zionist group, the Hashomer Hatzair (Young Guard). Today the Hashomer is the youth section of the

History Former Prime Ministers Menachem Begin - The Sixth Prime Minister Menachem Begin - The Sixth Prime Minister
Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk in 1913, and received a Jewish-Zionist education. His family was forced to flee during World War I but returned to Brest-Litovsk after the war ended. At an early age, Begin joined the "Hashomer Hatzair" movement, and in 1929 he joined the Betar Youth Movement, founded and headed by Zeev Jabotinsky.
In 1931 Begin began studying law at the University of Warsaw, graduating in 1935. He soon reached important administrative and leadership positions in the Betar movement, and in 1932 became a member of the national administration of Betar in Poland and Head of its Organizational Department. In 1937 he was appointed the Betar representative in Czechoslovakia, and in 1939 he was elected by Jabotinsky as Head of Betar Poland, an organization which trained approximately 70,000 youths for missions of defense and "illegal" immigration to the land of Israel.

Studying the Strategic Legacy of Menachem Begin More than two decades have passed since the signing of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty and a decade since the passing of Prime Minister Menachem Begin, one of its two architects. To commemorate Begin, the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies and the IDF's National Defense College (NDC), together with the Menachem Begin Heritage Center and the Ministry of Education Information division in Tel Aviv, conducted a March seminar focusing on Begin's strategic legacy. Close to 200 officers and academics attended the seminar. Among the lecturers: the BESA Center's professors Inbar (Begin's peace policy), Sandler (Begin's Lebanon policy) and Steinberg (Begin's nuclear policy), and Oded Granot of Maariv.

Maj. Gen. Yaacov Amidror, head of the IDF's Colleges, headlined the seminar with an address on "the role of intelligence in decision-making in complicated political-diplomatic situations." Amidror pointed to lacuna in Begin's attitude toward the professional intelligence corps. "Begin never told us in Military Intelligence about the talks underway between then-Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and Egyptian envoy Hassan Tohami. As a result, we were not in a position to advise him in real time," noted Amidror with chagrin. Efraim Dubek, former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, conducted a masterful, if troubling, overview of the Egyptian-Israeli relationship. "From the very beginning, the Egyptians never intended to normalize relations with Israel," he said. "This was not because of the Palestinian issue, nor because Israel was a 'conqueror', but out of fear of Israel. They feared that the Israeli steamroller would overpower the Egyptian economy; feared that we would introduce concepts of democracy and free speech and freedom of the press to Egypt. We signed 50 normalization agreements with the Egyptians - but not one of them has been fulfilled," Dubek charged passionately.

    Menachim Wolfovitch Begin

(Brest Litovsk, Russia 1913- Israel 1992) Israeli prime minister 1977-1983, leader of the Israeli part of the struggle for the peace treaty with Egypt which was signed in 1979, winner of Nobel Peace Prize 1978. Begin was a strong and outspoken conservative leader, but with a pragmatic attitude to politics. While internationally praised for his achievements with establishing peace with Egypt, the condemnation of the invasion of Lebanon and the following occupation of southern Lebanon was equally strong. Begin will be remembered for conducting politics which were exclusively formed to fit the interests of Israel, no matter what outward appearance it could take. HISTORY
    August 16:
Born in Brest Litovsk, Russia (after World War I, Poland, now Brest in Belarus).
After studying law at the University of Warsaw for some years, Begin becomes active in the Zionist movement and leader of one of the groups. In 1939, Begin flees to Lithuania, but is arrested by Soviet authorities.
Is interned in a Soviet concentration camp.

Address of Prime Minister Menahem Begin to the Knesset
    November 20, 1977
Hebrew Mr. Speaker, Honourable President of the State of Israel, Honourable President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Worthy and Learned Knesset Members: We send our greetings to the President and to all adherents of the Islamic faith, in our own country and wherever they may be, on the occasion of the Feast of Sacrifice, Id el-Adha. This feast reminds us of the binding of Isaac on the altar, the test with which the Creator tried the faith of our forefather Abraham - our common father; the challenge which Abraham met. But, from the point of view of morality and the advancement of Mankind, this event heralded the principle of a ban on human sacrifice. Our two Peoples, in their ancient tradition, learned and taught that humanitarian prohibition, while the nations around us continued to offer human sacrifices to their idols. Thus we, the People of Israel and the Arab People, contributed to the advancement of Mankind, and we continue to contribute to human civilization until this very day. I greet the President of Egypt on the occasion of his visit to our country and his participation in this session of the Knesset. The duration of the flight from Cairo to Jerusalem is short but, until last night, the distance between them was infinite. President Sadat showed courage in crossing this distance. We Jews can appreciate courage, as exhibited by our guest, because it is with courage that we arose, and with it we shall continue to exist.

Born 1913 in Brisk, Poland, then part of the Russian Empire. Served as Betar Commander in Poland. At the beginning of World War Two was imprisoned in a Soviet camp in northern Siberia. On release, joined the Polish armed force established in the USSR. In 1942 arrived in Eretz Israel as a soldier. After demobilization, in late 1943, was appointed Irgun Chief Commander. On February 1, 1944, the Irgun under Begin, declared a revolt against the British in Palestine. He headed the struggle until the state of Israel was established. During the underground years, the British invested great effort in attempts to seize him. They offered a reward of 5,000 pounds sterling for information, a vast sum in those days. After dismantling of the Irgun and coopting of its fighters to the IDF, Begin established the Herut movement and headed it. From 1965 he headed Gahal (Herut-Liberal Bloc) and then the Likud. In 1977 he was elected Israel's sixth prime minister, and on 26 March 1979 he signed the peace treaty with Egypt. Served as premier until his resignation and retirement from political life in September 1983.
