Begin, Menachem Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland on 16 August 1913, son of Zeev-Dov and Hassia Begin. He was educated at the Mizrachi Hebrew School and the Polish Gymnasium (High School). In 1931, he entered Warsaw University and took his law degree in 1935. Until the age of 13 he belonged to the Hashomer Hatza'ir scout movement, and at the age of 16 joined Betar (Brit Trumpeldor), the nationalist youth movement associated with the Zionist Revisionist Movement. In 1932 he became head of the Organization Department of Betar for Poland travelling on its behalf throughout the country, and contributing many articles to the revisionist press. He was sent to Czechoslovakia to head the movement there.
In 1937 he returned to Poland, and for a time was imprisoned for leading a demonstration, in front of the British Legation in Warsaw, protesting against British policy in Palestine. He organized groups of Betar members who went to Palestine as illegal immigrants, and in 1939 became the head of the movement in Poland. On the outbreak of World War II, he was arrested by the Russian authorities and in 1940-41 was confined in concentration camps in Siberia and elsewhere, but was released under the terms of the Stalin-Sikorski agreement. On his release he joined the Polish army and was transferred to the Middle East. After demobilization, in 1943, he assumed command of the Irgun Zvati Leumi (National Military Organization), known by the initials of its Hebrew name as "Etzel". In this capacity he directed Etzel's operations against the British, and the Palestine Government offered a reward of £ 10,000 for information leading to his arrest, but he evaded capture by living in disguise in Tel Aviv. In 1947, he met in secret with several members of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine as well as the foreign press, to explain the outlook of his movement.

MENACHEM BEGIN was the last survivor of that generation of Zionist leaders who seized, out of the ashes of the Holocaust, the opportunity to realize their vision of a Jewish state on their ancestral soil in Palestine. To be sure, Begin's role in all of that was controversial. He led the militant Irgun, whose battle against the British sometimes spilled over into bitter clashes with David Ben-Gurion's Haganah and the kinder, gentler wing of the Zionist movement. Yet in the end he became a statesman: after thirty years as leader of the opposition in the new democratic state, the firebrand became prime minister. There too, his pugnacity had its vindications and its controversies-from the brilliant strike against the Iraqi nuclear bomb factory in 1981, to the disaster of the Lebanese war in 1982-83.

As Prime Minister, Begin signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 (sharing the Nobel Prize with Anwar Sadat ), but was criticized for the 1982 invasion and occupation of Lebanon (led by Ariel Sharon ). Menachem Begin
Israel's sixth Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, was born in Brisk (now Brest-Litovsk), then part of the Russian Empire, on August 16, 1913. Menachem Begin was the youngest of three children born to Zev Dov and Hassia Begin. The Begin family was uprooted from Brisk by World War I and fled into Russia. At the war's conclusion, the Begins returned to Brisk and to an independent Poland. Following the completion of his education at a local public high school, Menachem Begin enrolled in Warsaw University in 1931 and was granted a law degree in 1935. A popular orator among Jewish students in Warsaw, Mr. Begin worked full-time on behalf of the Betar Zinoist youth movement in Poland following his graduation. He became head of Polish Betar in 1939, one of the most influential positions of leadership in pre-Holocaust Jewish Europe. At the onset of World War II, Mr. Begin encouraged the emigration of thousands of Polish Jews to the Land of Israel just as the country's gates were being shut by the British mandatory government. Mr. Begin continued his Zionist organizational work until he was arrested by Soviet occupation authorities in 1940. He remained in Gulag prison camps, mostly in Siberia, until 1941, when he was freed with other Polish prisoners. Upon release, Mr. Begin joined the Polish army-in-exile, and was assigned to a unit that was dispatched to the Middle East. His parents and older brother remained trapped in Poland and perished in the Holocaust.

Menachem Begin and Israel
Menachem Begin was born in 1913 and died in 1992. Though seen as a hard-liner, Menachem Begin, along with Egypt's Anwar Sadat , started a peace initiative between Israel and Egypt that could have transformed the Middle East . It led to the talks at Camp David, America , in 1978 for which both men received world-wide praise. Begin was born in 1913 in Brest Litovsk, in the old Soviet Union . A Zionist from an early age, he became a lawyer after graduating with a law degree from the University of Warsaw in Poland. While in Poland, he gained a reputation for administrative and leadership skills and became head of Betar Poland – an organisation that was created to defend Polish Jews. When the Germans occupied Poland in September 1939, Begin went to Lithuania where he believed he would be safe. However, in 1940, Begin was arrested by the NKVD and sent to a labour camp in Siberia. After the German invasion of Russia in June 1941, Begin was set free because he was a Polish national. He joined the Free Polish Army. Both his parents were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust – something that was to deeply influence him and his decisions as a politician.

    Introduction
Print Preview of Section Begin, Menachem (1913-1992), Israeli prime minister (1977-1983), who in 1979 signed the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab country (Egypt). Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, Belarus). The son of an Orthodox Jew who supported Zionism (the movement for the settlement of Jewish people in Palestine), Begin became involved in Zionist youth organizations at an early age. At age 16, Begin joined Betar, the youth movement associated with Revisionist Zionists, who advocated more forceful action to establish a Jewish homeland than did mainstream Zionists. Begin received a law degree from the University of Warsaw, in Poland, in 1935. In 1938 he became head of Betar in Poland. When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, marking the outbreak of World War II, Begin fled east, but he was arrested by Soviet authorities and confined in concentration camps in Siberia and elsewhere until 1941. After joining the Polish army to fight the Nazis, Begin was dispatched to Palestine in 1942. Discharged in 1943, he remained in Palestine and assumed command of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, a guerrilla organization seeking to oust the British, who had controlled Palestine since 1922. Pursued by British authorities for his anti-British activities, Begin managed to evade capture by going into hiding in Tel Aviv (now part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel).

In Memoriam Menachem Begin
Daniel J. Elazar
It is becoming clear that the two people who stand head and shoulders above the other founders of Israel are Menachem Begin and David Ben-Gurion. In that sense, Begin has come into his own only in the last few years. Each of these two great men drew a very important lesson in their own lives and behavior from the failures of the Jewish people at the time of the Second Commonwealth, failures that indeed led to the destruction of the Second Temple and the Second Commonwealth. The lessons they learned, as they themselves have written, were important operative principles in their lives. The lesson Menachem Begin drew was that the major reason for the destruction of the Second Commonwealth was civil war among Jews. Since we Jews have a propensity for it, he vowed that he would do everything in his power to prevent such a thing. One of the greatest moments in his life, certainly the most significant for Jewish history, was when he boarded the ship Altalena after it came under attack from the Israeli army, at Ben-Gurion's direct order, to prevent it from bringing in needed arms for the Israeli forces in violation of the UN-imposed truce in 1948, and refused to give the order to fire back. For Ben-Gurion, he was willing to take that risk rather than risk alienating the United States, so he ordered opening fire. Israel Galili and his other advisors at that time were ready to go to the limit. But Begin would not fire back.

Menachem Begin Menachem Begin (1913-1992) served as prime minister from 1977- 1982, the first prime minister who did not come from the socialist-Labor movement, and signed the peace agreement with Egypt, Israel's first with any of its Arab neighbors. Begin negotiated the Camp David Accords with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, for which they jointly received the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, a city that was then in the Russian empire but is today part of Belarus. He was an ardent Zionist, and in his teens joined Ze'ev Jabotinsky's Betar youth movement, where he quickly gained leadership positions. By 1936, he was in charge of Betar Czechoslovakia and two years later he became head of Betar Poland, which had 100,000 members and was involved in arms training to defend the Jews of Poland and the transport of illegal immigrants to Israel. In 1940, the Soviets imprisoned Begin in a Siberian labor camp, but after the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, he was set free due to his Polish citizenship. He then joined the Free Polish Army, which in 1943 made its way to Palestine, which was then under British rule, for training. There Begin contacted the Irgun Zvai Leumi, the dormant Jewish underground, and began plans for a Jewish uprising against the British authorities, which began in 1944 and continued until late 1947. Begin ordered many of the Irgun's operations, including a breakout from Akko prison and the bombing of British offices in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. After the state of Israel was established in 1948, Begin disbanded the Irgun.
