Great Leaders of our People Menachem Begin
Menachem Begin witnessed and experienced the Holocaust, a black period in Jewish History, about which one is permitted to ask questions, but can expect no answers. He experienced the suffering of the Jewish People in full measure, but maintained his faith in his Creator and in his people. He was one of the Great Jewish Leaders, certainly of the twentieth century, perhaps of all time. He was born in Brest-Litovsk in 1913. He became very familiar with the classic Jewish sources: the Bible, the Mishnah and Gemara, and the Siddur. He became intimately familiar with Jewish History. A passionate Zionist from his youth, he joined Z’ev Jabotinsky’s Betar Youth Movement in his teens, becoming the leader of Betar of Poland, an organization of 100,000 members, organized to defend Polish Jewry and to help provide the transport of “illegal” immigrants to Israel.
Begin became the operational head of the “Irgun Z’vai Leumi,” the National Military Organization that confronted the British, in their attempts to suppress Jewish immigration to Palestine after the Holocaust. He organized the Akko prison breakout and the destruction of the central administrative offices of the British at the King David Hotel, providing early warning to the British so that they could save their lives. Although some make foolish comparisons, it is clear that it as an obscenity to mention Begin’s name in the same sentence as today’s bloodthirsty terrorists.

He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978 with Anwar Sadat for their efforts towards the Israel-Egypt peace treaty of 1979. In 1981 Begin won a new term of office but his health was failing. The death of his wife in 1982 was a grave blow, resulting in his retirement in September 1983. For the rest of his life he was a virtual recluse. Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, in Belarus), studied law in Warsaw, and fled to the USSR in 1939. As leader of the Irgun group, he was responsible in 1946 for a bomb attack at the King David Hotel, Jerusalem, which killed over 100 people.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Begin, Menachem (1913-1992), Israeli prime minister (1977-1983), who in 1979 signed the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab country (Egypt). Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, Belarus). The son of an Orthodox Jew who supported Zionism (the movement for the settlement of Jewish people in Palestine), Begin became involved in Zionist youth organizations at an early age. At age 16, Begin joined Betar, the youth movement associated with Revisionist Zionists, who advocated more forceful action to establish a Jewish homeland than did mainstream Zionists. Begin received a law degree from the University of Warsaw, in Poland, in 1935. In 1938 he became head of Betar in Poland. When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, marking the outbreak of World War II, Begin fled east, but he was arrested by Soviet authorities and confined in concentration camps in Siberia and elsewhere until 1941. After joining the Polish army to fight the Nazis, Begin was dispatched to Palestine in 1942. Discharged in 1943, he remained in Palestine and assumed command of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, a guerrilla organization seeking to oust the British, who had controlled Palestine since 1922. Pursued by British authorities for his anti-British activities, Begin managed to evade capture by going into hiding in Tel Aviv (now part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel).

Menachem Begin
A passionate Zionist from an early age, he joined Ze'ev Jabotinsky's Betar youth movement in his teens, rising quickly to important administrative and leadership positions. By 1936 he was in charge of Betar Czechoslovakia, and in 1938 he became the head of Betar Poland immigrants to Israel , agricultural training, and communications. In 1940, Begin was imprisoned in Siberian labor camps by Josef Stalin's NKVD (a forerunner of the KGB). After the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, he was set free by dint of his Polish citizenship, and joined the Free Polish Army, which in 1943 made its way to for training. Contacting the dormant Jewish underground, Irgun Zvai Leumi , Begin set about planning a Jewish uprising against the British authorities. This began in 1944, but increased in pace and scope immediately after World War II and continued until late 1947. Begin ordered many of the Irgun's operations, including the Akko prison breakout and the destruction of the central British administrative offices in the King David Hotel . Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Begin disbanded the Irgun.

Begin, Menachem Begin, (1913-1992), served as prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. The leader of the conservative Likud Party, he came to power after the party won a majority of the seats in the Knesset (Israeli parliament). After the 1981 elections, the Likud Party and smaller conservative parties formed a coalition, and Begin remained prime minister. Begin resigned from office in 1983.
In 1978, Begin, President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt, and President Jimmy Carter held discussions in the United States about ways to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. The discussions resulted in a major agreement that included plans for Israel's withdrawal from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. The agreement also called for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. In addition, the agreement provided for Palestinian autonomy in two Israel-occupied territories the West Bank, formerly ruled by Jordan; and the Gaza Strip, formerly administered by Egypt. Begin and Sadat shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. The treaty was signed in 1979. Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula was completed in 1982. Israel began to provide for Palestinian autonomy in 1994.
In 1981, Begin's government claimed legal and political authority over Syria's Golan Heights. Syria and many other countries denounced this claim. Israel had gained control of the area in a war against Syria in 1967. Although Israel's relations with Egypt improved under Begin, relations with other Arab nations remained hostile. Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin , a village with about 750 Palestinian residents. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and according to Plan Dalet, it was to be destroyed and the residents evacuated. In all over 100 men, women, and children were systematically murdered. Fifty three orphaned children were literally dumped along the wall of the Old City where they were found by Miss Hind Husseini and brought behind the American Colony Hotel to her home which was to become the Dar El-Tifl El-Arabi orphanage.
