A Biography of the Anthropologist george wells beadle.

George Wells Beadle
George Beadle is credited as "the man who laid the foundation for the field of biotechnology." He studied agronomy under Frank Keirn at the University of Nebraska Lincoln , earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1926 and a Master of Science in 1927. His interest in genetics began at Cornell, where he began his graduate work and earned his Ph.D. In 1931, Beadle was distinguished National Research Council post-doctoral fellow and instructed at California Institute of Technology through 1935. He served on the faculties of Harvard University Stanford University , and the Institut de Biologie in Paris. It was then he conducted his prize-winning research: subjecting the neurospora of red bread mold to x-rays, he caused the mold to mutate. He then noted some mold ceased to produce specific organic compounds needed to survive. He added similar but different compounds and observed how the mold synthesized needed chemicals. His conclusion was that "the characteristic function of the gene was to control the synthesis of a particular enzyme. (Genetic Control of Biochemical Reactions in Neurospora, 1941) In 1946 he returned to Cal Tech as Professor and Chair of the Division of Biology. While he was serving as the George Eastman Professor at Oxford University University of Chicago from 1961-1968. During this time he brought many distinguished and prize-winning scholars to the university, and with his second wife, Muriel, he wrote

Thomas Hunt Morgan won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1933 for his chromosome theory of heredity. On the basis of experimental research with the fruit fly (Drosophila), he demonstrated that genes are linked in a series on chromosomes and that they determine identifiable, hereditary traits.
An embryologist by training, Morgan turned his attention to Drosophila in 1908. On the basis of fly-breeding experiments, he developed a hypothesis of sex-linked characteristics, which he theorized were part of the X chromosome of females. In 1928, he came to Caltech to organize work in biology. The most influential biologist in America at that time, Morgan pioneered the new science of genetics, the essential science for the future of biology. In 1930, he also established a marine biology laboratory at Corona del Mar (the lab is still in use today). By then, Morgan had left Drosophila genetics and had returned to his earlier interest in developmental biology. He often spent weekends at the marine station working with an organism called the sea squirt. He remained on the Caltech faculty for the rest of his career.
Anderson arrived at Caltech in 1923 as an 18-year-old freshman, and never left. He discovered the positron in 1932, using a cloud chamber. Shortly thereafter, Anderson and his graduate student, Seth Neddermeyer, discovered mu-mesons, or muons. During World War II, Caltech scientists produced and tested land and aircraft rockets for the United States Navy. Anderson supervised the testing of aircraft rockets at China Lake and later visited the front lines in Europe to observe how the rockets performed. He served as chair of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy from 1962 to 1970, and was named emeritus in 1976.

Other descriptions of George Wells Beadle Beadle won a Nobel Prize in 1958 George Wells Beadle October 22 June 9 ) was an American scientist in the field of genetics . He shared half of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Lawrie Tatum for their discovery that genes act by regulating biochemical events within the cell. The other half of that year's award went to Joshua Lederberg Beadle and Tatum's key experiments involved exposing the bread mold Neurospora crassa to x-rays , causing mutations . In a series of experiments, they showed that these mutations caused changes in specific enzymes involved in metabolic pathways . These experiments led them to propose a direct link between genes and enzymatic reactions, known as the "one gene, one enzyme" hypothesis.

The Archival Biographical File was established in order to organize and make accessible information on faculty members, officers, trustees, staff members, and other individuals related to the University. The materials have been received from many sources, although the largest portion has come from the Office of University News and Information and its predecessors. No attempt is made by the Archives to systematically collect biographical information on all members of the University community, but appropriate items are filed here as they are received. The file includes biographical data sheets, curriculum vitae, obituaries, press releases, articles, and news clippings. Some folders also contain small amounts of letters and other original manuscripts. With a few exceptions, the file does not contain information on students or alumni, unless they have some other affiliation with the University. Book-length biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs are listed in a separate inventory, "Archival Biographical Monographs."

    George Wells Beadle
George Wells Beadle 22. Oktober in Wahoo Nebraska 9.

George Beadle: A Renaissance Man Spun From Cornsilk
By Andrea Wood Cranford, UNL Alumni Association
George Wells Beadle was a homespun sort of Renaissance man. The man who laid the foundation for the field of biotechnology and whose name is attached to the world-class research facility at UNL was one of America's foremost geneticists and a Nobel Prize winner dedicated to scholarly precision and integrity. He was also a farmer, an educator, an author, a humanitarian, a mountain climber and a cat fancier who grew corn on his front lawn and raised kittens, at one time owning 15 six-toed cats which he introduced into his genetics lectures. He was born in 1903 on a 40-acre farm near Wahoo, where his father cultivated potatoes, asparagus, strawberries and bees as he nurtured his three motherless children. Beadle's talent for scientific inquiry was apparent early. A high school teacher recognized and encouraged it, and eventually convinced Beadle's father that the young man was college material. So off he went to the state university in Lincoln where he studied with agronomy professor Frank Keim, earning a bachelor of science in 1926 and a master of science in 1927. It was while doing graduate work at Cornell, where he took his doctorate, that he first became interested in genetics.
