DEPARTMENT NEWS Welcome back Students and Faculty and welcome to Megan McCarley Congratulations to Robin and Tracy McCarley. The Chemistry Department is proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Megan (June 22nd, 7lbs 11 oz) The Chemistry Department Mourns the Loss of Ben Boussert Ben was tragically removed from the lives of the many he touched on July 16, 2005 in an automobile accident near Berkeley, California. In addition to Benjamin Boussert, two other Berkeley chemistry graduate students perished in this accident. Ben was a gentle, kind, thoughtful, very intelligent young man who always had a smile in his pocket. His intellectual brilliance is amongst the best we have seen at LSU. We would all feel fortunate to have a son and brother such as Benjamin Boussert. Benjamin's potential to be a great scientist and great person are gone now, but our thoughts of him and what we imagine he could have been will fuel us all on our journey to being the best that we can be. Chris and Anne Boussert have indicated that the suggestion of a scholarship fund in Benjamin's name is a good one. At this time, the scholarship fund has no particular name. If you wish to donate funds to help endow this account for a Boussert scholarship, please contact the LSU Foundation (Ann M Marmande, annmarie@lsu.edu or James Harris, jharris@lsufoundation.org). Recent Research Developments Index of Recent Research News March 16th, 2005 Ring Around the Nitrogen The 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione heterocycle [alternatively, a d i t hia s uccinoyl (Dts)-amine] was first described in the German patent literature. The realization in 1977 that heterocycle constituted an orthogonal amino protecting group, readily removable by thiols and other reducing agents was followed by extensive mechanistic work, as well as the development of applications to the syntheses of peptides, amino-sugars in glycopeptides, and peptide nucleic acids (PNA). The Dts heterocycle has also proved useful as a masked isocyanate and (inversely) as a sulfurization reagent for trivalent phosphorus, particularly for synthesis of phosphorothioate DNA. Methods described to date for transformation of amines to Dts-amines involve multiple operations, with concomitant reductions in overall yield and increases in formation of byproducts. It seemed plausible that bis(chlorocarbonyl)disulfane ( ), the two-sulfur analogue of succinyl chloride, might be used in facile single-step elaborations of Dts-heterocycles

It reflects an attempt to discover the degree to which the vestibular system is responsive and also how symmetric the responses are, between left and right. It is a test of the lateral semicircular canals alone it does not assess vertical canal function or otolithic function. While not as good as we would like, the caloric test is the best that we have. History: The caloric response was first described in by Robert Barany in 1906, and more completely in a book on the vestibular system in 1907. His findings were immediately considered pivotal and Barany received the Nobel Prize. However, his colleagues at the Vienna University Clinic were less enthusiastic and suggested that he took the ideas of others and presented them as his own. Barany worked with Alexander, Heinrich Neumann, and Politzer all otologists at the time. Alexander suggested that he rather than Barany first described the fistula test , and also that he had jointly described with Barany, ocular counter-roll. Alexander is now best known for his description of the effects of gaze on spontaneous nystagmus
