Sir Frederick Banting Finalist in CBC The Greatest Canadian Contest
A former Londoner, Sir Frederick Banting, is gaining National attention. During the airing of the CBC's The Greatest Canadian program last night, Dr. Banting was identified as a top 10 finalist. For the next six weeks, Canadians will be given the opportunity to vote for whom they think is the Greatest Canadian who ever lived.
"We are thrilled that Dr. Banting is receiving national recognition for the discovery of insulin and the numerous contributions he made during his life," says Grant Maltman, curator of Banting House National Historic Site. "Banting House National Historic Site pays tribute not only to Banting's discovery of insulin but to his other accomplishments. These include his London period, service during both World Wars, his receiving of Canada's first Nobel Prize and being an accomplished painter."
Dr. Banting's discovery of insulin not only changed the lives of Canadians, but also individuals around the world with diabetes. Prior to the discovery of insulin, the life expectancy of a person with diabetes was less than a year from diagnosis. Thanks to Banting's discovery, that is no longer the case. With more than two million Canadians diagnosed with diabetes, the Canadian Diabetes Association and its presence in more than 150 communities, works to prevent diabetes and improve the quality of life for those affected, through research, education, service and advocacy. Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982 Schack August Steenberger KROGH - discovers the mechanism controlling the capillary blood vessels. UMMS Investigator Awarded 2000 Banting Medal for "Lifetime Achievement" in Diabetes Research
February 18, 2000
WORCESTER, Mass. Crediting the "many talented scientists" with whom he works, Dr. Czech said, "This honor just enhances our enthusiasm and prompts us to redouble our efforts to find answers regarding this major disease process that affects so many lives in this country." Throughout his career, Czech has studied Type 2 diabetes (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes) which afflicts approximately 15 million Americans. Specifically, Czech and his lab are investigating the events that emanate from the insulin hormone binding to the cell surface receptor, or the action that triggers the cellular events that regulate sugar entry into the cells. "Lately, we've been particularly successful in applying genomics to this problem," Czech said. "Gene discovery has bearing on the identification of novel proteins in the insulin signaling pathway." "To those of us here at UMMS who have watched Dr. Czech's career with pride and admiration, it is no surprise that he would be honored with one of the most prestigious awards in his field," said Aaron Lazare, MD, chancellor and dean of the Medical School. "Just as Frederick Banting blazed a trail for a new generation of scientists as one of the discoverers of insulin, Michael Czech has, through his research and his leadership, led his generation of scientists ever closer to a fundamental understanding of this terrible disease."

The Portrait Gallery of Canada is based on the collections of
Library and Archives Canada, whose portraits comprise an incomparable
visual record of men and women from all walks of life who have helped shape Canada.
New Acquisitions : Introduction
The establishment of the Portrait Gallery of Canada has enlarged the scope of the Library and Archives Canada collection to encompass honorific and commemorative purposes in addition to the documentary nature of previous collecting. Inspired by the announcement of the Gallery, Canadians have made donations and offers of exceptional quality that have greatly enriched the collection.
Consequently, new strengths are being developed in 20th-century portraiture and sculpture. Future acquisitions from the 16th to the 18th centuries will be pursued as well as works which explore and extend the traditional concept of the portrait. Works will also be commissioned of living Canadians by Canada's most talented portrait artists. The Gallery acquires on behalf of Library and Archives Canada by purchase, donation and bequest in all media: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography and new media.

excerpt:
"When he was a boy on the farm near Alliston, he used to stare at the tiny glass door on the kitchen clock with the painted palm tress and faded moon. The shy boy who couldn't spell would never have imagined, though, that one day an idea he scribbled down in the middle of the night would bring children back from the brink of death. Sitting there, staring at the clock, he could not have imagined that schools would be named after him, or impossibly, that one of the craters on the moon, named after the great scientists of history, would one day be named after him, in honour of what he had done."

The donor of these two photographs received them from the wife of Dr. H. H. Horne in Lapland after the 1917 Russian Revolution. At the Czar’s request, Dr. Horne had brought his X-ray apparatus to the palace at St. Petersburg in the winter of 1898. During the photographic session, according to Mrs. Horne, the equipment overloaded the palace’s electrical system, and she inadvertently bumped into the Czar in the darkness. Harvey Williams Cushing (1869-1939)
Ether Chart , May 2, 1895 In 1894, Harvey Williams Cushing and Ernest Amory Codman (1869-1940), both junior house pupils at Massachusetts General Hospital, made a bet to see who could develop better control over the administration of surgical anesthesia and thereby limit the distress—and even accidental death—of patients during operations. The two young physicians each devised charts to graph temperature, pulse, and respiration of their patients while anesthetized. This volume contains the original ether charts of both Codman and Cushing. Thirty years later, Dr. Cushing could not recall who won the wager, but maintained both he and Dr. Codman became more skillful in their work because of the care and close attention paid to the condition of anesthetized patients. These charts—precursors of the electronic monitoring systems common today—are the earliest examples of meticulous documentation of a patient’s vital signs, and their development is one of the major American contributions to surgical technique.

Gilt by Association
A Celebration of Medical History Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine
Just what makes something rare? While medical books or letters or instruments may be intrinsically interesting, offer historical insight, or fascinate simply by virtue of their age or scarcity, these items all acquire an added luster when we know where they came from and who owned them, used them, or even just touched them. This added dimension, or association value, can transform even the most mundane item into an object of unparalleled rarity and distinction. The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine houses one of the world’s largest collections of books, manuscripts, prints and photographs, artwork, artifacts, and museum specimens documenting the history of medicine from the Middle Ages to the present day. This exhibit, Gilt by Association , commemorates the drama and richness of medical history and allows the public a glimpse of extraordinary treasures associated with some of the most renowned figures and events in medicine. From Presidents in the White House to the Czars of Russia in the Winter Palace at St. Petersburg, Gilt by Association celebrates 800 years of milestones in the history of medicine through the rich and varied collections at the Countway Library of Medicine.
