Aretaeus the Cappadocian's statement about diabetes written about 150 AD
This is the full text of a short essay written by Areteus the Cappadocian, sometime in the second to third century AD. The Web page is part of an online bibliography on the history of diabetes which has been created by E. Bruce MacDougall, a diabetes sufferer. According to the site, the source used for this text is Dorothy Clark's Source Book of Medical History ," originally published in 1942, and republished in 1960 by Dover. Dorothy Clark cites as her source a translation of a Greek version prepared by Francis Adams in 1856 for the Sydenham Society. The essay is startling for two things: the misunderstanding of the nature of the disease (which he describes as "a melting down of the flesh and limbs into urine"), and the distressing description of the sufferer's symptoms. Sir Frederick Grant Banting* What many consider the outstanding achievement of Canadian medical research — the discovery of insulin — was the work of a team: Dr. Frederick Banting, physiologist Charles Best, Dr. J.J.R. Macleod, and biochemist J.B. Collip. It was Banting's idea that the pancreas secreted a substance that could be used to treat diabetes. Exciting early experiments in 1921 by Banting and Best brought Macleod and Collip actively into the project. The four announced their discovery in 1922. The effect of insulin on diabetics was immediate and astonishing. Insulin has since helped millions around the world. In 1923, Banting and Macleod were the first Canadians to be awarded the Nobel Prize; Banting shared his prize money with Best, Macleod shared his with Collip. Best was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1967.

Banting group rips OHS on homestead
Edward trusted the OHS to do the right thing'
Posted October 20, 2004 ED NOTE : Last week the Ontario Historical Society informed the Town it would not enter into an agreement that would have protected about 70 acres of the 100 acre property surrounding the homestead. Instead, speculation is mounting that the OHS intends to sell the property. The group needs money and mega home builder Mattamy Homes is building several hundred new houses next to the Banting Homestead Property, which is north of Highway 89 on Sir Frederick Banting Road. Below is the response from the Banting Educational Committee, which includes members of the Banting family. The birthplace of Sir Frederick Banting, located in Alliston, is in trouble. The Ontario Historical Society (OHS) owns the Banting homestead. The home and buildings on the farm where Frederick Banting was born on November 14th 1891, are deteriorating and threatened with destruction because of the inaction of the Ontario Historical Society, which was entrusted with the mandate to protect and preserve this vital piece of Ontario's history. Edward Banting, the last Banting to own the farm, set up a museum in the front parlour of his farmhouse and eagerly gave information on the Banting legacy to the tourists who visited the site. He did this for many years and kept notes on all of these visitors. He was a full time farmer and a part time Banting historian and genealogist. Fred Banting was Edward's uncle.

Banting, Sir Frederick Grant, co-discoverer of insulin (b at Alliston, Ont 14 Nov 1891; d near Musgrave Harbour, Nfld 21 Feb 1941). Youngest of 6 children of a middle-class farm family, Fred Banting persevered through high school, failed first year in arts at U of T and then enrolled in medicine. He graduated in 1916 with above average grades, served as a medical officer in France, where he was wounded in action and decorated for valour, and in 1919-20 completed his training as an orthopedic surgeon. In July 1920 he began the practice of medicine in London, Ont. On the night of 31 Oct 1920, after reading a routine article in a medical journal, Banting wrote down an idea for research aimed at isolating the long-sought internal secretion of the pancreas. He received support for his proposed research at U of T, where he began work on 17 May 1921 under the direction of J.J.R. Macleod and assisted by C.H. Best. Banting's and Best's experiments were crudely conducted and did not substantiate Banting's idea, which was physiologically incorrect. But their apparently favourable results encouraged greater efforts, which culminated in the winter of 1921-22 in the discovery of insulin by a team of researchers that included Macleod, Banting, J.B. Collip and Best. Insulin was immediately and spectacularly effective as a lifesaving therapy for DIABETES MELLITUS. Banting was hailed as the principal discoverer of insulin because his idea had launched the research, because of his prominence in the early use of insulin, and because he and his friends carried on a campaign to discredit his senior collaborators, Macleod and Collip, with whom he was temperamentally incompatible. On learning that he was to share the 1923 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine with Macleod, Banting gave half his prize money to Best. He was awarded a life annuity by the federal government, appointed Canada's first professor of medical research at U of T and knighted in 1934.

Frederick Grant Banting discoverer of Insulin, was born November 14, 1891, on his family's farm in Alliston, Ontario. He attended Alliston Continuation School and completed his medical studies at the University of Toronto Medical School in 1916. He established a surgical practice in London, Ontario, supplementing his income as a medical demonstrator at the University of Western Ontario.
In London he conceived the technique which might permit isolation of the anti-diabetic component of the pancreas. He returned to the University of Toronto in 1921 to conduct experiments on the pancreas at the labs of Dr. J. R. MacLeod. By the time the summer had ended, he and Charles Best had isolated Insulin. They were successful in testing their extract on diabetic dogs. Dr. J.B. Collip joined the team and developed the process by which Insulin could be purified and processed in sufficient amounts for clinical trials. The first human test was conducted in 1922 with spectacular results and the formula was given gratuitously to the University of Toronto in trust for the benefit of humanity.
Fame came quickly to the soft-spoken Banting who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine because of his discovery. Many honours followed, including knighthood, and Banting continued to work on further research and co-ordinated the National Wartime Medical Research effort. His efforts were cut short by a fatal crash in Newfoundland February 21, 1941.

ABSTRACT Objective: To narrate the life and legacy of Frederick Grant Banting. Design: Historic essay (15 References). Setting: University Department of History. Results: Frederick Grant Banting was born in Canada on November 14, 1891. He began his studies in his native Alliston until his medical school graduation at the University of Toronto in 1916. He was enlisted in the Royal Army of Canada during First World War, serving as a medical officer. He was wounded and decorated for his bravery and heroism in 1919. He began his practice as a surgeon in Toronto under the influence of Dr. Clarence L Starr, and continued in London, Ontario as a surgeon and assistant professor at the local university. He started to get interested in diabetes mellitus research in 1920, and 1 year later, with the collaboration of Charles H Best and the assistance of JB Collip and JJR MacLeod's physiology laboratory at University of Toronto, Banting discovered insulin. In January 11, 1922, Banting and Best utilized insulin in a human patient for the first time. This was followed by large scale production of insulin. Banting continued to perform research at the University of Toronto at institutes especially developed for him. He was decorated by the Canadian Parliament, knighted by the British Empire and, in 1923 awarded the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology for the discovery of insulin. He was dedicated, inquisitive, a free thinker, a worldwide celebrity, a loyal friend and an amateur artist. He was married twice and had only one son. He died on February 21, 1930 serving to his country as a military research physician, leaving a legacy to us of one of the most important tools for treatment of diabetes mellitus.
