Biography
David Wisniewski trained for his career in the arts by attending the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. A 1973 graduate of the school, he spent two seasons as a Ringling Brothers clown before joining the country's largest tent show, Circus Vargus, for an additional year. Clowning taught David Wisniewski two important lessons: good children's entertainment appeals to adults as well as kids; and, the best stories and jokes are those that amuse the performer and the audience.
After tiring of life on the road, David Wisniewski returned home to Washington, D.C. and freelanced as an actor and special effects/prop designer for local theatre and opera companies. In 1975, he was hired as a puppeteer for a local troupe run by Donna Harris. The two married six months later.
In 1980, they left to form Clarion Shadow Theatre, which enjoyed immediate success in area schools. The group staged adaptations of "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" and "Kaa's Hunting" from Kipling's Jungle Book. They also ventured into puppet pantomimes with a quintet of original supernatural tales entitled "The Witching Hour." By the year's end, the troup had played the Smithsonian Institution's Discovery Theatre and the Kennedy Center's Programs for Children and Youth.

E-Mail This Article Published on Friday, August 5, 2005 by the Baltimore Sun The Hiroshima Cover-Up by Amy Goodman and David Goodman A story that the U.S. government hoped would never see the light of day finally has been published, 60 years after it was spiked by military censors. The discovery of reporter George Weller's firsthand account of conditions in post-nuclear Nagasaki sheds light on one of the great journalistic betrayals of the last century: the cover-up of the effects of the atomic bombing on Japan. On Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima; three days later, Nagasaki was hit. Gen. Douglas MacArthur promptly declared southern Japan off-limits, barring the news media. More than 200,000 people died in the atomic bombings of the cities, but no Western journalist witnessed the aftermath and told the story. Instead, the world's media obediently crowded onto the battleship USS Missouri off the coast of Japan to cover the Japanese surrender. A month after the bombings, two reporters defied General MacArthur and struck out on their own. Mr. Weller, of the Chicago Daily News, took row boats and trains to reach devastated Nagasaki. Independent journalist Wilfred Burchett rode a train for 30 hours and walked into the charred remains of Hiroshima.

Appointed president of Rockefeller Univ. in 1990, he resigned the next year after a scientific fraud scandal. A paper he coauthored was said to contain fraudulent data from another author, Dr. Thereza Imanishi-Kari, and Baltimore was criticized for his vehement defense of the paper despite the evidence. In 1996, an appeals panel overturned the verdict of the original investigating office, the federal Office of Scientific Integrity (now the Office of Reasearch Integrity), and Baltimore and Imanishi-Kari were exonerated. In 1997 Baltimore was appointed president of the California Institute of Technology.

Executive Producer, Writer, Series Creator
David Simon is a Baltimore-based author, journalist and writer-producer of television specializing in criminal justice and urban issues. Born in Washington, he came north to Baltimore after graduating from the University of Maryland to work as a police reporter at the Baltimore Sun. In 1988, after four years on the crime beat, he took a leave of absence from the newspaper to write "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets."
Published in 1991, the Edgar-award winning account of a year inside the Baltimore Police Department Homicide Unit became the basis for NBC's HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET, which was broadcast from 1993 to 1999. Simon worked as a writer, and later as a producer on the award-winning drama.
In 1993, Simon took a second leave from the Baltimore Sun to research and write, "The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood." Published in 1997 and co-authored with Edward Burns, the true account of life in a West Baltimore community dominated by an open-air drug market was named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times.
Having left the Baltimore Sun in 1995, Simon continues to work as a freelance journalist and author, writing for publications as varied as the Washington Post, the New Republic and Details magazine.
