Encyclopedia Baltimore, David b´l tÄm´r, –mər ) , 1938–, American microbiologist, b. New York City, Ph.D. Rockefeller Univ., 1964. He conducted (1965–68) virology research at the Salk Institute before becoming a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. In 1970 he and his wife Alice Huang discovered a virus caused by an enzyme that could transcribe DNA into RNA. He shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Renato Dulbecco and Howard Temin for his study on the connections between viruses and cancer. Appointed president of Rockefeller Univ. in 1990, he resigned the next year after a scientific fraud scandal. A paper he coauthored was said to contain fraudulent data from another author, Dr. Thereza Imanishi-Kari, and Baltimore was criticized for his vehement defense of the paper despite the evidence. In 1996, an appeals panel overturned the verdict of the original investigating office, the federal Office of Scientific Integrity (now the Office of Reasearch Integrity), and Baltimore and Imanishi-Kari were exonerated. In 1997 Baltimore was appointed president of the California Institute of Technology.

David Baltimore
David Baltimore of Massachusetts Institute of Technology was accused of publishing a paper containing data allegedly forged by an associate, Dr. Imanishi-Kari. The case has been under investigation for more than 10 years. Its longevity can probably be ascribed to a combination of Baltimore's fame as a Nobel Prize winner, and the eagerness of Rep. John Dingell (D. Mich.) to prosecute him.
But also at stake is the credibility of a whistleblower, Margot O'Toole, who reported the alleged misdeed. The personalities involved eclipse the crime.

Trust essential in scientific collaboration, says David Baltimore
February 22, 2002 Trust should be as simple as "the Golden Ruleyou trust me and I'll trust youbut it seems to be falling out of fashion," said David Baltimore, president of the California Institute of Technology, in a talk on "Building a Community on Trust" held in Kresge Auditorium Tuesday night. The world is relying increasingly on "surveillance equipment rather than trust. We've put our trust in methods of control, not in people." But this mechanical equipment cannot "ensure moral behavior," said Baltimore, a former MIT Institute Professor and the founding director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research who became president of Caltech in 1997. He won the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1975 for his work in virology. The talk was the fourth in the Ford/MIT Nobel Laureate Lecture series, a five-year program sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. In his talk, which ranged in scope from current events to past personal experiences, Baltimore described how two events that occurred during his time at MIT turned on trust: the establishment of the Whitehead Institute and the scientific misconduct case against Thereza Imanishi-Kari, a Tufts professor who had previously been at MIT.

David Byrne
David Byrne was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, on 14 May 1952. When he was 2 years old, his parents moved to Canada at the expense of a company that was recruiting engineers and semi-scientists from Europe. When David was 8 or 9 years old, his parents moved again, this time to the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland. In September 1970, David went straight from High School to the Rhode Island School Of Design. It was here that he met Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth who were also enrolled as Freshmen. David was not very impressed by art school: " I think art school is a real racket, especially in this country. You run into a couple of good teachers and some interesting students but for the amount of money you spend, it's not worth it At Rhode Island School Of Design, David studied a functional design programme known as the Bauhaus Theory course. He also took a conceptual art course. The staff were not sure about David, particularly when he put on a performance in which he had his hair and beard shaved off onstage to a piano accordion accompaniment and a showgirl displaying cue cards written in Russian. The professors at RISD were less charmed, however, and David found himself out on the street. He had been at the RISD for one year.
