Addams: From Saint to Villain, Sociologist to Social Worker
Addams was always a controversial figure, a frequently forgotten fact. She supported labor when it was radical to do so, provided a meeting space for anarchists when the populace wanted them "out of town," and led a series of local battles on politics, education, and even the sanitary department. Such stances led to her being labeled a radical and troublemaker throughout her life. Simultaneously, she was often lauded, respected and victorious in her battles with the government, capitalists, and repressive vested interests. Her survival of these many confrontations aided in establishing her notoriety and respect. As Davis has noted: "Probably no other woman in any period of American history has been venerated and worshipped the way Jane Addams was in the period just before World War I." [13] Addams became a leader in the pacifist movement when war broke out in Europe in 1914. Half a year later, in 1915, Addams headed the Women's Peace Party but the group received little notice at this time. In the spring, a group of women met at the Hague at an international congress to unite in opposition to the war. After this meeting, some of these delegates spoke with world leaders in an effort to urge the heads of state to neutrality or peaceful negotiations. [15] At this time, some people were hostile to these trips and their mission, but in general there was little opposition and even some amusement. But by mid-summer, there were angry press releases concerning her naivete and failure to understand the war's significance. According to Davis, "the animosity of the attack can only be explained by the fact that she had been an important symbol for Americans." [16]

Have you ever wondered about the origin of the phrase: "If you want peace, work for justice?" I recently saw it on a bumper sticker that attributed the slogan to Pope Paul VI, and if you go to the Vatican sites for his annual peace messages between 1967 and 1969, you will find the general sentiment there. But the origin of the idea that peace requires social justice—not just the absence of warfareÑis much older. In the twentieth century United States this idea originated in Jane Addams' book
