Emily Greene Balch Public Assistance of the Poor in France , published in 1893; completed her formal studies with scattered courses at Harvard and the University of Chicago and with a full year of work in economics in 1895-1896 in Berlin.
In 1896 she joined the faculty of Wellesley College, rising to the rank of professor of economics and sociology in 1913. An outstanding teacher, she impressed students by the clarity of her thought, by the breadth of her experience, by her compassion for the underprivileged, by her strong-mindedness, and by her insistence that students could formulate independent judgments only if they combined on-the-spot investigation with their research in the library. During these years she was a member of two municipal boards (one on children and one on urban planning) and of two state commissions (one on industrial education, the other on immigration); she participated in movements for women's suffrage, for racial justice, for control of child labor, for better wages and conditions of labor; she contributed to knowledge with her research, notably, Our Slavic Felow-Citizens (1910), a study of the main concentrations of Slavs in America and of the areas in Austria and Hungary from which they emigrated.

Emily Greene Balch January 8 January 9 ) was an American academic, writer , and pacifist who received the Nobel Peace Prize in (the prize that year was shared with John Mott ), notably for her work with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Born in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston into a well-off family, she was amongst the first graduates of Bryn Mawr College in 1889. She continued to study sociology and economics in Europe and the US, and in 1896 joined the faculty of Wellesley College , becoming a full professor of economics and sociology there in 1913. During the First World War , she helped to found the League, and campaigned against America's entry into the conflict. Her contract terminated by Wellesley because of her pacifist activities, she became an editor of The Nation , a well-known liberal news magazine, acted as secretary of the WILPF (a second term in 1934 without salary for a year and a half), did much work for the League of Nations Balch became a Quaker in 1920. She never married.

Week of August 1, 2000 Emily Greene Balch, noted sociologist, political scientist, economist and pacifist, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946.
Balch was born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, in 1867. She was a member of the first graduating class (1889) at Bryn Mawr. She did further study in Paris, Berlin and at the University of Chicago, and served at Denison House, a social settlement in Boston. Balch joined the Wellesley College faculty in 1896. The biography Balch, a member of the Society of Friends, had become increasingly committed to the cause of peace. She attended the International Congress of Women at the Hague in 1915, and - on leave from Wellesley College traveled to Russia and Scandinavian countries to persuade their governments to initiate mediation efforts to stop World War I. On her return to the U.S. she campaigned against U.S. participation in the conflict. She asked for an extension of her leave to continue this work; the Trustees decided instead not to renew her contract. In 1915 she had helped Jane Addams of Hull House found the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom . She served as its secretary 1919-22, and 1934-35. In 1936 the WILPF elected her their honorary international president.

In 1946 she shared the Nobel Peace Prize with John R. Mott. Emily Greene Balch was born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on January 8, 1867. Her father and mother, Ellen Noyes and Francis V. Balch, were educated Unitarians who raised their six children to cherish high moral and religious standards. When selecting a college after attending Miss Catherine Ireland's School in Boston, Balch chose Bryn Mawr. Entering in 1886, she studied economics and graduated with an A.B. degree in 1889. The initial recipient of the European Fellowship at Bryn Mawr, she went first to New York City to work under social reformer Jacob Riis, then used her award to attend the Sorbonne. From 1890 to 1891 she applied herself to "the social question," and upon her return to the United States she worked in Boston with Charles W. Birtwell at the Children's Aid Society.
