Front Page Previous Story Next Story NLM 'Profiles' Web Site Adds Axelrod Papers The accomplishments of some of the giants of 20th century biomedicine are newly available as the National Library of Medicine makes the scientists' archival collections available through the latest digital technology on its "Profiles in Science" web site ( profiles.nlm.nih.gov Launched in 1998, "Profiles" contains the personal collections that scientists have donated to NLM and features published and unpublished items including books, journal volumes, pamphlets, diaries, letters, manuscripts, photographs, audiotapes, video clips and other materials. The most recent addition to the archive is pharmacologist and neuroscientist Julius Axelrod, who shared the 1970 Nobel Prize for discoveries "concerning the humoral transmittors in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation." Axelrod spent his most fruitful years of research at NIH, first at the (then) National Heart Institute and later at the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Julius Axelrod

JULIUS (JULIE) AXELROD

Vzdìláním byl neurochemik s hlavním zamìøením na studium biogenních aminù.
Po analgetické éøe se Axelrod zaèíná velmi intenzivnì zajímat o sympatikomimetické aminy, které tak v roce 1910 pojmenovali britští farmakologové George Barger a Sir Henry Dale. Patøily mezi nì zejména kofein, benzedrin, amfetamin, meskalin a efedrin. Zvláštì efedrin studoval Axelrod velmi podrobnì. Efedrin je alkaloid z rostliny Efedra sinica a je podobný adrenalinu, který se v 50. letech používal k léèení astmatu a obìhového selhání. Axelrod zjistil, že efedrin zvyšuje srdeèní práci, má vasokonstrikèní a bronchodilataèní úèinky a zpùsobuje mydriázu.
Pozdìji se zabýval chováním hormonù a neurotransmiterù vèetnì adrenalinu, dopaminu a serotoninu.
V létech 1950 až 1951 vyvinul metodu mìøení kofeinu v krvi. Pozdìji zaèal studovat ještì další látky – metamfetamin a morfin. Metamfetamin – pervitin, vedle nìkterých pozitivních úèinkù vyvolává i závislost. O amfetaminu zjistil, že je to budivý amin, který snižuje chu k jídlu (je to tedy anorektikum), ale bohužel s velkým potenciálem závislosti. Axelrod provádìl srovnávací studie metabolizmu tìchto látek.
Byl jedním z prvních vìdcù v USA, který studoval metabolizmus dietylamidu kyseliny lysergové (LSD) jako halucinogenní drogy (v letech 1954–1958).
