Dr. Julius Axelrod
Julius Axelrod was born on May 30th, 1912, in New York City. He obtained his B.Sc. in 1933 at the College of the City of New York, M.A. in 1941 at New York University, and Ph.D. in 1955 from the George Washington University.
“In October 1970, the Karolinska Institutet decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation".
The discoveries which the 1970 Nobel laureates have made have given us answers to questions of fundamental importance for the understanding of the mechanism underlying the transmission between the nerve cells, i.e. at the so-called synapses, and between the nerve terminals and the so-called effector organs, for instance between the motor nerve fibres and the muscle fibres which they innervate. The transmission between the nerve cells, which radically differs from the mechanisms underlying the impulse transmission in the nerve fibres, is mediated by chemical substances, so-called neurotransmitters, which carry the message from one cell to the other. The three scientists have been working independently of each other, but their discoveries all contribute in solving principal questions concerning the neurotransmitters, their storage, release and inactivation.

Axelrod, Pavel (1850-1928) One of the founders of the Russian Emancipation of Labour group. After the Second Congress of the RSDLP he became a Menshevik . A Centrist during WWI. Pavel Axelrod was born in Chernigov, Russia, in 1850. Influenced by the writings of Bakunin, he established a socialist group of students in Kiev, and contributed to the radical journals, Worker and Commune In 1877 he joined the Land and Liberty. Three years later the group split into two factions. The majority of members, who favoured a policy of terrorism, established the People's Will. Axelrod and George Plekhanov established the Black Repartition group that rejected terrorism and supported a socialist propaganda campaign among workers and peasants. Axelrod went with George Plekhanov to live in Switzerland and in 1883 they established the Liberation of Labour group. In March, 1898, the various Marxist groups in Russia united to form the Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP). The party was banned in Russia so most of its leaders were forced to live in exile. Axelrod became co-editor of Iskra . It was printed in several European cities and then smuggled into Russia by a network of SDLP agents. At the Second Congress of the Social Democratic Labour Party in London in 1903, there was a split between supporters of Lenin and those of Martov. Lenin's a faction known as the Bolsheviks, Martov's the Mensheviks.

Nobel Laureate Axelrod, Neuroscience Pioneer
Nobel Laureate Julius Axelrod, Ph.D., an NIMH researcher since 1955, died in his sleep early Wednesday morning, December 29, 2004. Axelrod is probably best known for his work on brain chemistry in the early 1960's that led to our modern-day treatments for depression and anxiety disorders. He inspired generations of neuroscientists during his long career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1996, NIH awarded him the title Scientist Emeritus. "Dr. Axelrod was one of the giants upon whose shoulders today's neuroscientists stand. His contribution to the fields of mental health and neuroscience make possible current breakthroughs on mood and anxiety disorders, and myriad other areas," said Thomas R. Insel, M.D., NIMH director. "His legacy lives on in the work of others. He will be greatly missed." In 1970, Axelrod, known to his colleagues as "Julie," was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries about how brain cells communicate with each other. He explained how neurotransmitters operate in the brain, forever altering the way modern antidepressant drugs are designed. Axelrod laid the groundwork for the treatment of anxiety and depression. He coined the phrase 're-uptake' inhibitors, referring to the 're-uptake' mechanism in brain cells that regulates the level of neurotransmitters available, influencing how neurons communicate. This revolutionary understanding of the brain's chemistry led to the modern generation of antidepressant medications—Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).
