By Maria W. Anderson Julius Axelrod , co-recipient of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for his research on neurotransmitters, died on December 29, 2004 , at his home in Rockville, Md. He was 92. Michael Brownstein , who worked as a postdoc in Axelrod's lab at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the 1970s, said that Axelrod, known to his colleagues as "Julie," was best known for his enthusiasm. "If I had to epitomize what made Julie special, it was ultimately his buoyancy," Brownstein, an NIMH geneticist, told The Scientist After majoring in biology at City College of New York, Axelrod wanted to be a physician but was rejected by all the schools to which he applied. Instead, he began his research career in 1935 testing vitamin supplements at the New York City Department of Health's Laboratory of Industrial Hygiene. He earned a master's degree in chemistry from New York University in 1941 and studied the chemistry of analgesics at the Goldwater Memorial Hospital (now Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility) before moving in 1949 to the National Heart Institute (now the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). After completing his PhD in pharmacology at George Washington University in 1955, Axelrod transferred to the NIMH, where he worked for almost 30 years and mentored more than 70 fledgling researchers.

Brownstein said that one thing Julie taught his postdocs was to not become fixated on one project. "At the point where you realize that you've contributed about as much as you can in one area, don't be afraid to leave it and visit another," he said. "It certainly worked well for Julie, and it's something I would love to be able to do myself." Over the course of his career, Axelrod studied diabetes, pain relievers, hormones, and psychoactive drugs. In 1970, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology, along with Bernard Katz of University College London and Ulf von Euler of the Karolinska Institute, for their research on how neurons communicate with each other.
Axelrod is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.

Thursday, December 30, 2004; Page B07 Julius Axelrod, 92, the National Institute of Mental Health neuroscientist who shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for showing "how nerves talk to each other," died Dec. 29 at his home in Rockville. He had heart trouble in recent years. A basket maker's son, Dr. Axelrod got a late start in the career that would bring him renown. He spent years as a biochemist in a food-testing laboratory before he focused on neuroscience, the study of nerves and their relation to behavior and learning. Described as a modest and brilliant man, he only sought a doctorate at the urging of colleagues and he completed it in a matter of months of night classes.
NIH neuroscientist Julius Axelrod wore glasses with a darkened lens after an accident in 1938.

    Obituary for Dr. Julius Axelrod
    May 30, 1912 - December 29, 2004

    by Tahira Farooqui, Ph.D.
Dr. Julius Axelrod 92, died Wednesday, December 29th, 2004 in Rockville, MD.

Dr. Axelrod was one of the outstanding leaders in neuroscience. He published many important papers on several topics including catecholamines (I have listed only few references below). His absence will make scientists realize that they have lost “a great neuroscientist, a pharmacologist and a biologist” who devoted his career to academic excellence.
Dr. Julius Axelrod was born May 30th, 1912 in New York City in the East side of Manhatton. He received his Masters degree in Chemistry in 1941 and Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1955. He became chief of the National Institute of Mental Health's pharmacology section and worked there for almost 30 years. He was awarded a noble prize in Medicine or Physiology, along with Bernard Katz and Ulf von Euler in 1970 on the work involving storage, release and inactivation of catecholamine neurotransmitters. He continued directing research even after his retirement in 1984.

Axelrod was born in New York City , the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland College of the City of New York New York University in 1941.
    Research
    Analgesic research
analgesics (pain-killers) work. During the 1940s, users of non- aspirin analgesics were developing a blood condition known as methemoglobinemia . Axelrod and Brodie discovered that acetanilide , the main ingredient of these pain-killers, was to blame, and recommended replacement with acetaminophen (paracetamol), better known as Tylenol
    Catecholamine research
In 1949, Axelrod began work at the National Heart Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At the National Heart Institute, he worked on the mechanisms and effects of caffeine , which led him to an interest in the sympathetic nervous system and its main neurotransmitters, epinephrine and norepinephrine. During this time, Axelrod also conducted research on codeine morphine methamphetamine , and ephedrine and performed some of the first experiments on LSD . Realizing that he could not advance his career without a Ph.D., he took a leave of absence from the NIH in 1954 to attend

Pavel Axelrod was born in Chernigov, Russia, in 1850. Deeply influenced by the writings of Mikhail Bakunin , he established a socialist group of students in Kiev. He also contributed to the radical journals, Worker and Commune In 1877 he joined the Land and Liberty . Three years later the group split into two factions. The majority of members, who favoured a policy of terrorism, established the People's Will . Axelrod and George Plekhanov established the Black Repartition group that rejected terrorism and supported a socialist propaganda campaign among workers and peasants. Axelrod went with George Plekhanov to live in Switzerland and in 1883 they established the Liberation of Labour group. In March, 1898, the various Marxist groups in Russia met in Minsk and decided to form the Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP). The party was banned in Russia so most of its leaders were forced to live in exile. Axelrod became co-editor of a journal called
