Abbe, Professor Ernst He was not only a distinguished German physicist and one of the most famous inventors on the staff at the Zeiss optical works at Jena but a notable social reformer, By a generous scheme of profit-sharing he virtually handed over the great Zeiss enterprise to the workers. Abbe was an intimate friend of Haeckel and shared his atheism (or Monism). Leonard Abbot says in his life of Ferrer that Abbe had "just the same ideas and aims as Ferrer." And-Er-Rahman III The greatest of the Moslem Arab Caliphs, who raised Spain from a state of profound demoralization to one of unprecedented prosperity, culture and brilliance while Christian Europe lay in the darkest phase of the Dark Age. It was from the splendor of his empire that civilization was rekindled in France, then in Europe generally. See S.P. Scott's Moorish Empire in Europe (3 vols. 1904) Scott piously deplores his "infidelity" and sensuality and then describes his magnificent work in lyrical language. Stanley Lane Poole (

Some excerpts from our history:
Some 50 members of the Swedish parliament, mainly liberals, gather to form SPAS. The meeting was a reaction to a proposal from the government to increase Sweden´s military spending.
Norway breaks out of the union with Sweden. There were discussions within Swedish society and the military about using military force to prevent the Norwegians from leaving the union. But after campaigns by, amongst others SPAS, the dispute was solved peacefully. It was also decided that future disputes between Sweden and Norway should be solved by arbitration.
Klas Pontus Arnoldson, one of the leading parliamentarians behind the founding of SPAS, shares the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sweden adopts its first law to provide an alternative service for conscientious objectors. The proposals were introduced by parliamentarians active in SPAS.
The writer Per Anders Fogelström (president of SPAS 1963-77) takes, together with others prominent in Sweden´s cultural life, the initiative to a campaign against Swedish nuclear arms. The campaign challenged ideas among some Swedish military and politicians to build a Swedish A-bomb. In 1968, finally, Sweden joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
At a demonstration arranged by SPAS 80 000 persons formed a human chain between the US and the Soviet embassies in Stockholm as a protest against the nuclear arms race.

    The Nobel prizes
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.
