What is the background of Yasser Arafat and the PLO?
Yasser Arafat On October 10, 1959, a group of about 20 Palestinians met in Kuwait and secretly formed Fatah. Fatah (or al-Fatah) is an acronym standing for Harakat Al-Tahrir Al-Watani Al-Filastini—the Movement for the National Liberation of Palestine. Yasser Arafat, who had been working as a construction engineer in Kuwait, soon emerged as the leader of Fatah. With Fatah, Arafat recurited terrorists and led fedayeen raids into Israeli territory. Among the offshoots of Fatah was the infamous "Black September" who murdered the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics When the PLO was founded in 1964 , as an umbrella organization for various Arab terrorist factions, Fatah was the largest group. It was, and still is, the military arm of the PLO.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Interim Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas escaped unharmed after militants from his Fatah movement opened fire near him in a tent crowded with mourners for Yasser Arafat - a warning that the period leading to the Jan. 9 election of an Arafat successor could be chaotic and violent. An Abbas bodyguard and a security officer were killed and six people were wounded in Sunday's shooting in Gaza City. The first shots triggered a chaotic firefight of several minutes with security guards - though it appears from the casualty count that most fired in the air, rather than taking aim. Some 30 or 40 gunmen were involved, none of them masked, but police declined to say Monday whether arrests had been made. The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent group with ties to Fatah, denied it sent the gunmen, and the rival Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups were not considered suspects.

Nov. 14: Palestinian leaders say that elections will be held Jan. 9 to replace Yasser Arafat. NBC's Tom Aspell reports. Nightly News
RAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinian officials scheduled presidential elections for Jan. 9, pushing forward Sunday with steps to a secure a new leader after the death of Yasser Arafat. The vote is a key test for the Palestinians, who want a smooth transition of power and hope for renewed international involvement in Mideast peacemaking. Arafat, who died Thursday, led the Palestinians for four decades and refused to appoint a successor. By law, elections had to be held by Jan. 9, within 60 days of Arafat's death. In the meantime, Parliament Speaker Rauhi Fattouh has been sworn in as the caretaker president of the Palestinian Authority, which governs Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat's First Appearance at the United Nations
By Donald Neff
It was 20 years ago that the United States and Israel suffered one of their greatest diplomatic defeats, and the Palestinians and the United Nations one of their greatest victories. The occasion came on Nov. 13, 1974, when Chairman Yasser Arafat of the Palestine Liberation Organization made a dramatic appearance before the U.N. General Assembly and called on the world community to decide between an "olive branch or a freedom fighter's gun." Arafat declared: "The difference between the revolutionary and the terrorist lies in the reason for which each fights. Whoever stands by a just cause and fights for liberation from invaders and colonialists cannot be called terrorist. Those who wage war to occupy, colonize and oppress other people are the terrorists....The Palestinian people had to resort to armed struggle when they lost faith in the international community, which ignored their rights, and when it became clear that not one inch of Palestine could be regained through exclusively political means....

The Weekly Standard, November 22, 2004 With Fidel Castro now sporting double-breasted suits, the uniform-clad Yasser Arafat could rightly claim to be "the world's last revolutionary." In this regard, as in so many others, Arafat has no heir. None of the contenders to "succeed" himif the verb is appropriate to the situationwears a military uniform. At Arafat's funeral, the pallbearers will be in either jackets and ties, checkered keffiyehs, or traditional religious garbbut little khaki. If history is any guide, worst-case fears about a descent to anarchy in the immediate aftermath of Arafat's death are unwarranted. While "Palestine" is not a state in the legal sense, it does have some of the attributes of the modern Arab state, from which succession lessons can be drawn. Traditionally, Arab states have had coups and assassinations but rarely revolutions or civil wars. When faced with the prospect of radical change that could bring down an entire ruling system, elites have more often than not found a way to produce suitable (or at least sustainable) successors rather than risk exposing themselves to wholesale political change. Such has been the case in republics, like Egypt, as well as in monarchies, like Saudi Arabia. The counter-case does not existthere is no example of an Arab state disintegrating when the leader, even the paramount leader, leaves the scene.

COMMUNIQUE: 11 November 2004
Yassir Arafat: 1929-2004
EARLY LIFE It's ironic that the man who personified the Palestinian movement was neither born in the region it claims, nor conforms to his own organization's definition of Palestinian identity. Yassir Arafat, whose real name is Abdel-Rahman Abdel-Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini, was born in August 1929 in Cairo , son of an Egyptian textile merchant. He was sent to Jerusalem as a small child after his mother died, then returned to Egypt via Gaza. Throughout his career, Arafat's Egyptian background was a political impediment and source of personal embarrassment. One biographer notes that upon first meeting him in 1967, 'West Bankers did not like his Egyptian accent and ways and found them alien,' and to the very end Arafat employed an aide to translate his Egyptian dialect into Palestinian Arabic for conversing with his West Bank and Gaza subjects. As a young man, Arafat took no part in the formative experience of the Palestinian movement

    Biography of Yasser Arafat
Arafat was apparently greatly influenced by one of his teachers, Majid Halaby, who gave him the nickname Yasir, because of his supposed resemblance to Yasir al Birah, a Palestinian leader killed by the British in the Arab revolt. Halaby, as "abu Khalid" was eventually killed (apparently by Abdel Khader El Husseini) and Arafat formed a Society of abu Khlalid the Martyr in his school, and likewise seems to have joined his father's Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood) group and attempted to bring it in line with the politics of the Husseini clan. al Futtuwah organization in 1948. This has been denied by some, and Thomas Kiernan and other biographers have amassed evidence that Arafat took little part in actual fighting, but he probably was a member of al Futtuwah . He is rumored to have shot himself in the leg. Arafat claimed to have been in Jerusalem in 1948 when the State of Israel was declared, but it is probable that he returned to Gaza before that time, and participated in planning a raid on Nizzanim in March. He had learned that Halaby was in fact murdered by Abdel Khader el Husseini and became an enemy of Abdel-Khader. After the war, Arafat participated in terrorist activities in Gaza, aimed not against Jews, but against supporters of the Nashashibi clan, rivals of the al-Husseinis. It was at this time that Arafat killed someone for the first time, a man he wrongly suspected of betraying his group to the Nashashibis. However, Arafat refused to integrate his militia group into the new group formed under orders of the Mufti, and his father exiled him to Cairo.
