Arafat Yasser

Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini was born on 24 August 1929 in Cairo , his father a textile merchant who was a Palestinian with some Egyptian ancestry, his mother from an old Palestinian family in Jerusalem. She died when Yasir, as he was called, was five years old, and he was sent to live with his maternal uncle in Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine, then under British rule, which the Palestinians were opposing. He has revealed little about his childhood, but one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers breaking into his uncle's house after midnight, beating members of the family and smashing furniture. After four years in Jerusalem, his father brought him back to Cairo, where an older sister took care of him and his siblings. Arafat never mentions his father, who was not close to his children. Arafat did not attend his father's funeral in 1952. In Cairo, before he was seventeen Arafat was smuggling arms to Palestine to be used against the British and the Jews. At nineteen, during the war between the Jews and the Arab states, Arafat left his studies at the University of Faud I (later Cairo University) to fight against the Jews in the Gaza area. The defeat of the Arabs and the establishment of the state of Israel left him in such despair that he applied for a visa to study at the University of Texas. Recovering his spirits and retaining his dream of an independent Palestinian homeland, he returned to Faud University to major in engineering but spent most of his time as leader of the Palestinian students.

Please see discussion on the talk page The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades (كتائب شهداء الاقصى) are one of the militias of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat 's al- Fatah faction. They have been one of the driving forces behind the al-Aqsa Intifada , emerging shortly afterwards. This militia was originally named after the Al-Aqsa Mosque , one of Islam 's holiest sites and an icon for the Palestinian movement. The group's membership is primarily drawn from the ranks of Tanzim , (organization in Arabic ), a militant youth group within al-Fatah. Following Yasser Arafat 's death on November 11 , the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades announced it was renaming itself to Brigades of Martyr Yasser Arafat . However, they later went back to using the original name. While the group initially vowed to target only Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and carried out guerrilla warfare against the Israeli military , in early it began a series of attacks against civilians in Israeli cities. In March 2002, after a deadly al-Aqsa Brigades suicide bombing in

    ARAFAT, Yasser President of Palestine
Yasser Arafat Yasser Arafat is founder of Fatah and chairman of the Palestine Liberation of Organization and was in 1996 elected as President. In 1974 he came before the U.N. General Assembly in 1972 with his famous "gun and the olive branch" speecj. The symbolic juxtaposition of peace and resistence has defined Arafat's political life. He died in November 2004 in a hospital in France.
On 15 November 1988, Yasser Arafat declared independence and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine. In 1993 he signed the Declaration of Principles at the White House and in 1994, after years of exile he returned back to Palestine, where he was elected as President of the Palestinian Authority. The Oslo Accords, which brought him back, were ultimately to undermine his status, as unabated Israeli colonisation of the occupied territories and punishing closures of towns soured what meagre benefits Palestinians experienced from the handover of population areas (but little other land) by Israel. By Kylie Morris in Gaza City Yasser Arafat is reported to have warned his people not to behave in a way that might give Israel an excuse to attack Palestinian areas, in the wake of the tragedies in America. Palestinian legislator Dr Ziad Abu Amr says Mr Arafat fears Israel will wage a public relations campaign to tarnish the image of Arabs and Muslims, particularly Palestinians.
Yasser Arafat believes Israel may look for provocation
Dr Abu Amr says there is a risk to Palestinians that Israel will take advantage of the current emergency, using harsher tactics while America is preoccupied with its internal tragedy. With wall-to-wall coverage of the attacks dominating regional and international media, the fact that nine Palestinians were killed overnight in the northern West Bank town of Jenin and another in the Gaza Strip, has barely registered. Instead, images of Palestinians handing out sweets to celebrate what happened in the United States have dominated.

    Yasser Arafat, 1929-2004
Obituary, The Electronic Intifada, 10 November 2004
10:07PM US Central Time/6:07AM Palestine Time Today, Yasser Arafat, Chairman of al-Fatah and the Palestine Liberation Organization and elected President of the Palestinian Authority, died in Paris from complications stemming from a blood disorder at the age of 75. Born Muhammad Abd al-Ra'uf al-Arafat al-Qudwa, Yasser Arafat was related to the Husayni family and had strong family ties to Gaza and Jerusalem. He first became active in Palestinian politics while an engineering student in Cairo in the early 1950s, where he headed the Union of Palestinian Students at Fu'ad I University (now Cairo University) from 1952-1957. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Arafat launched his own contracting firm in Kuwait and quickly prospered. He probably used his personal wealth to launch al-Fatah, the most prominent of a number of exile groups advancing armed struggle as a means of liberating Palestine.
For nearly five decades, Yasser Arafat was a larger-than-life figure for those who admired him as well as those who hated and feared him, or, to be more precise, for those who hated and feared the Palestinian view of history, justice, and politics. Since the late 1960s, Arafat was
