Edward Victor Appleton, Sir : 1892 - 1965 The British physicist Sir Edward Victor Appleton, (b. Sept. 6, 1892, d. Apr. 21, 1965), won the 1947 Nobel Prize for physics for his discovery that the upper layer of the ionosphere, called the F-region or Appleton layer, reflects radio waves. The discovery established the possibility of radio communication over long distances. Appleton served as a professor (1924-36) of physics at King's College, University of London, taught (1936-39) at Cambridge University, and, while serving (1939-49) in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, aided in the development of radar and the atomic bomb. He was knighted in 1941.
Source: The New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Edward Victor Appleton was born in Bradford, England, on 6th September, 1892, the son of Peter and Mary Appleton. He received his early education at Hanson Grammar School. Bradford then took his B.A. degree in Natural Science at St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1913 and 1914, with physics for Part II. He won the Wiltshire Prize in 1913 and the Hutchinson Research Studentship in 1914, studying under Sir J.J. Thomson and Lord Rutherford. During the First World War he joined the West Riding Regiment, transferring later to the Royal Engineers. At the conclusion of hostilities he returned to Cambridge and took up research on radio waves.

For many years it had been postulated that there was a conducting layer in the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Marconi had been able to make his historic tranatlantic transmissions and to achieve this the signals had to be "bent if they were to reach their destination. In 1902 Oliver Heaviside and A E Kennelly independently proposed the idea of their being a conducting layer that reflected radio signals.

SIR EDWARD VICTOR APPLETON
Nobel Laureate
Pioneer of Radio and Space Research
INTRODUCTION
Sir Edward Appleton, Nobel prizewinner, and widely recognized as the discoverer of the Ionosphere, was born in 1892 in the city of Bradford. Although he ceased full-time residence in Bradford at the age of 19, he maintained close links with the members of his family who remained there, and it was thus a significant influence in his life.
Early years in Bradford
While at this school, Appleton developed an interest in physics, spurred by the influence of a gifted and energetic physics master, J. A. Verity. Appleton developed a passion for physics, scoring 100% in his first school examination in the subject. Verity recognized his potential, to the extent that he was given a key to the laboratory and was permitted to attend some more advanced classes at the Bradford Technical College. It is noteworthy that his portrait photograph from that period was posed in the company of an optical bench.
Cambridge and World War I
Appleton went up to Cambridge (St John’s College) in 1911 and his undergraduate career appears to have been exemplary, resulting in a ‘double first’ (i.e. first-class honours in Part I of the Natural Science Tripos in 1913 and first-class honours again in Part II Physics papers in 1914). He seems to have spent the vacations back in Bradford, including further periods of work at the Technical College, probably because his home life at the time was clouded by the terminal illness of his first sister Isabel, who died at the end of 1911.

During he travelled in the United States of America . Proceeding in to Cuba , he met Henry Christy the ethnologist , with whom he visited Mexico . Tylor's association with Christy greatly stimulated his awakening interest in anthropology , and his visit to Mexico, with its rich prehistoric remains, led him to make a systematic study of the science. Appleton, Sir Edward Victor
