Biographical Information
Documents Jump to Chronology Visuals Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Jr., was born 26 March 1916 in Monessen, Pennsylvania, a small town south of Pittsburgh. His father, Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Sr., was a mechanical engineer; both he and his wife, Sophie Rasmussen Anfinsen, were Norwegian immigrants who taught their children the Norwegian language and heritage. After living for several years in the Pennsylvania town of Charleroi, the family moved to Philadelphia in the 1920s. In 1933, Anfinsen was admitted to Swarthmore College on a scholarship, where he studied chemistry and played football while working as a waiter in the dining hall. The 1937 edition of the Halcyon , the Swarthmore yearbook, described him this way: "With nostrils distended (denoting passion) [Anfinsen] strolls around campus under a mop of flaxen hair looking soulfully at the co-eds with big blue eyes." Reminiscing about his college years in 1964, Anfinsen noted humbly that "Everyone at Swarthmore was a genius except me."

Anfinsen, Christian B. Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, March 26, 1916. Dr. Anfinsen obtained a B.A. degree from Swarthmore College in 1937 and an M.S. in organic chemistry in 1939 from the University of Pennsylvania. He spent the year 1939-40 as a Visiting Investigator at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagec. In 1943, he received a Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School in biochemistry and spent the next seven years at Harvard Medical School; first as Instructor and then as Assistant Professor of Biological Chemistry. During this time, he spent a year (1947-48) as a Senior Fellow of the American Cancer Society working with Dr. Hugo Theorell at the Medical Nobel Institute. Dr. Anfinsen left Harvard in 1950 to become Chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metaolism in the National Heart Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He was again at Harvard Medical School as Professor of Biological Chemistry in 1962-63 and then returned to the National Institutes of Health to assume his present position. In Anfinsen's early work, he and Steinberg studied the non-uniform labelling in newly synthesized proteins - a technique with later permitted Dintzis, Canfield and others to determine that proteins are synthesized sequentially from the amino-terminal and in vivo, and to calculate the rate at which amino acids are polymerized.

Darwin's Vision and Christian Perspectives. Edited by Walter J. Ong, S.J. New York: The Macmillan Co. 1960. Reviewed by R. L. Mixter, Professor of Zoology, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. The Roman Catholic Church has analyzed its beliefs regarding evolution in this volume by professors at Fordam and St. Louis Universities. The impacts upon biology, philosophy, American economic history, and theology are noted from Darwin's time until the present. In the introduction, Walter Ong comments that "evolution is a term which can still disconcert or hypnotize" but the authors conclude that all the transformations which the biological evolutionists have indicated may be accepted if one believes that "human souls are immediately created by God." "If we accept the fact that the human came into being at the end of a series of sudden mutations directed to this end by the Creator God, then these changes reveal God's providence throughout." Alexander Wolsky mentions that biologists face a new difficulty: "a certain complacent belief that owing to the neo-Darwinian synthesis evolutionary biology has solved its main problems and that all that remains to be done is to work out a few minor details" but he is confident that this attitude will pass as new research is done.
