IN RE: PHILIP W. MANS; WILLIAM AND NORINNE FIELD, Plaintiffs/Appellees, v. PHILIP W. MANS, Defendant/Appellant. BAP No. NH 96-085 UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY APPELLATE PANEL OF THE FIRST CIRCUIT June 25, 1997, Decided PRIOR HISTORY: Appeal from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Hampshire. (Hon. James A. Goodman, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge). Christopher J. Seufert and Seufert Professional Association were on brief for appellees. Judges: Before Queenan, Feeney and Boroff, U.S. Bankruptcy Judges Author of Opinion: QUEENAN QUEENAN, J. Having already made its mark on the fraud exception to a debt's discharge in bankruptcy, this case bids fair to do so again. In a prior appeal by the present appellees, William and Norinne Field (the "Fields"), the Supreme Court ruled in their favor. It held the degree of reliance required under section 523(a)(2)(A) of the Bankruptcy Code is merely justifiable reliance, the predominant standard at common law, rather than the more exacting standard of reasonable reliance imposed by the lower courts in dismissing the Fields' fraud claim. Field v. Mans, 516 U.S. 59, 133 L. Ed. 2d 351, 116 S. Ct. 437 (1995).

Since then, over 400 PEI members have been designated as PEI Ambassadors What is a PEI Ambassador? Ambassadors are PEI members who have recruited new members into the association. By sending the name of an eligible company to PEI, you begin the process of membership recruitment. PEI staff sends a complete membership information packet to the company, and when an application form is received, you will qualify as a PEI Ambassador. How Are PEI Ambassadors Recognized?
  • You receive a handsome 10x12 walnut plaque with your name engraved on a brass plate. Each year thereafter, you receive a date plaque for each year you recruit a member. PEI Ambassadors are listed permanently on the PEI web site. PEI Ambassadors are listed annually in the TulsaLetter.
PEI has grown almost entirely on the basis of personal recommendations by members. You can contribute to this growth by submitting the name of at least one prospective member.

TO: SPU Faculty, Staff, and Students RE: Tsunami Relief Efforts DATE: January 10, 2005 We are all stunned by the horrible tragedy endured by the people of South Asia. Our hearts and prayers go out to these people, to the families who have lost their loved ones, to the towns and villages that are devastated by the terrible force of this event, and to those who are hard at work bringing relief. I know we are all trying to understand what is happening and seeking ways we might be of some help. Early on I asked Tami Anderson Englehorn, Director of Campus Ministries, if she would gather our folks from various areas across campus to coordinate our efforts and to suggest ways we might respond. Tami, Jeff Jordan, Dean of Students, and Mike Kitson, ASSP President, along with many other student leaders, faculty, and staff, have proposed a plan. I am grateful for all they have done already. Here now is what they have planned over the days ahead:
  • Through the office Student Life, Jeff Jordan will coordinate efforts to collect and distribute donations to our crisis fund. The intent of this fund is provide necessary financial assistance that will allow current students, impacted by such an event, to continue their SPU education.

The University of Tokyo"Todai" is Japan's oldest and most prestigious university. Until last year they had not picked up the peculiar Western custom of awarding honorary degrees, but in that year they began with the economics "Nobelist" Amartya Sen. This year in November the second recipient will be P.W. Anderson who taught at Todai during a Fulbright year in 1953-4, among other connections. quote
    Philip W. Anderson
    Physicist and Nobel laureate, Princeton
Is string theory a futile exercise as physics, as I believe it to be? It is an interesting mathematical specialty and has produced and will produce mathematics useful in other contexts, but it seems no more vital as mathematics than other areas of very abstract or specialized math, and doesn't on that basis justify the incredible amount of effort expended on it.
My belief is based on the fact that string theory is the first science in hundreds of years to be pursued in pre-Baconian fashion, without any adequate experimental guidance. It proposes that Nature is the way we would like it to be rather than the way we see it to be; and it is improbable that Nature thinks the same way we do.
The sad thing is that, as several young would-be theorists have explained to me, it is so highly developed that it is a full-time job just to keep up with it. That means that other avenues are not being explored by the bright, imaginative young people, and that alternative career paths are blocked.
    end quote
maybe the top level scientific establishment is finally wising up
today's Science Section of the Times has selections from the responses to the Edge.org Question for 2005brief quotes from over a dozen prominent scientists about "what do you believe but can't prove" where you get the man or woman's high priority message. Instead of being asked about a specific topic they each got to speak out with whatever message they urgently wanted to get across-usually it was something having to do with their own field (as in the case of Anderson the direction theoretical physics has been going) but it could be anything: philosophy, god, the future of the human species, morality, whatever.

The John W. Campbell Award for the best science-fiction novel of the year is one of the three major annual awards for science fiction. The first Campbell Award was presented at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1973. Since then the Award has been presented in various parts of the world: at California State University at Fullerton; at St. John's College, Oxford; at the World SF Writers Conference in Dublin; in Stockholm; at the World SF meeting in Dublin again; and since 1979 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The Award was created to honor the late editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, which is now named Analog . Campbell, who edited the magazine from 1937 until his death in 1971, is called, by many writers and scholars, the father of modern science fiction. Writers and critics Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss established the award in Campbell's name as a way of continuing his efforts to encourage writers to produce their best possible work. The Award differs from the other two major awards in the field by being restricted to the novel and by its method of selection. The Hugo Awards are voted upon by some thousand of the several thousand members who pay advance fees to attend the World Science Fiction Convention, which meets annually at different locations on Labor Day weekend. The Nebula Awards are voted by some hundred of the nearly one thousand members of the Science Fiction Writers of America and presented at the annual Nebula Award meeting usually held late in April.
