Anderson, Carl David
American physicist, discovered the positron and the muon Born 1905 AD [ New York, US ]
Died 1991 AD [ San Marino, California] Background
His father, also called Carl David, was a Swedish immigrant and the family moved to Los Angeles when Carl was just a boy. He started to study Electronic Engineering at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), but changed to physics in his first year. Anderson took J. Robert Oppenheimer's graduate course in quantum mechanics and stayed with the course even after everybody else dropped out. He received his Ph.D. magna cum landa (top of the class) in 1930 and he remained at Caltech for the rest of his life becoming a professor in 1939. Cosmic rays
Anderson's research advisor was Noble Laureate Robert A Millikan, he suggested that Anderson should study cosmic rays and modify a newly invented device called a Cloud Chamber to study these rays. He designed and built a cloud chamber with powerful electromagnet surrounding his chamber on the top floor of the aeronautics building at Caltech, where there was adequate electric power to run the large electromagnet. The positron
After two years studying photos for the cloud chamber, in 1932 Carl took a photograph of a positively charged electron passing through the lead plate in the center of the cloud chamber and moving upwards. It was definitely a positively charged particle and a measure of it mass showed that it was close to that of the electron. Carl reported that he found a new particle, called the 'Positron' which had the same mass as the electron but a positive charge. This particle was predicted by Paul Dirac in 1928 but several well known scientists, including Niels Bohr, were sceptical of his findings. It was not accepted until March 1933 when Blackett and Giuseppe Occhialini of Cavendish Laboratories confirmed its existence.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) in 1927. In 1930, Anderson earned his doctorate degree magna cum laude from Cal Tech. His thesis, based on the spatial distribution of electrons ejected from gases by X-rays, was published in Physical Review. Beginning in 1930, Anderson collaborated with his graduate advisor, Nobel laureate Professor Robert A. Millikan on a study of cosmic rays. Their research led to the discovery in 1932 of the "positron," a positively charged electron. Anderson continued to study radiation and fundamental subatomic particles and in 1933 produced proof that positrons are emitted from gamma rays. For this discovery, Carl Anderson received the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics. Anderson's discover of positrons greatly contributed to developing atomic bomb technology.Due to his significant accomplishments, he was invited to direct what soon became known as the Manhattan Project. Throughout World War II he served on the National Defense Research Committee and with the Office of Scientific Research and Development. From 1963 to 1966, Anderson acted as Chairman of the Physics Section of the National Academy of Science. He was neither active, nor interested in political movements relating to nuclear weapons. However, Anderson did sign a petition opposing hydrogen bomb tests along with other members of the physics department at the Academy.Carl Anderson died on 11 January 1991.

Carl David Anderson
By William H. Pickering
BEST KNOWN FOR HIS discovery of the positive electron, or positron, Carl David Anderson was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1936 at age thirty-one. The discovery of the positron was the first of the new particles of modern physics. Electrons and protons had been known and experimented with for about forty years, and it was assumed that these were the building blocks of all matter. With the discovery of the positron, an example of anti-matter, all manner of theoretical and experimental possibilities arose. The Royal Society of London called Carl's discovery "one of the most momentous of the century." Born on September 3, 1905, in New York City, Carl was the only son of Swedish immigrant parents. His father, the senior Carl David Anderson, had been in the United States since 1896. When Carl was seven years old, the family left New York for Los Angeles, where Carl attended public schools and in 1923 entered the California Institute of Technology. Caltech had opened its doors in 1921 with Robert A. Millikan, himself a Nobel laureate, as chief executive. Together with chemist Arthur A. Noyes and astronomer George Ellery Hale, Millikan established the high standard of excellence and the small student body that today continues to characterize Caltech. Carl was an excellent student. Originally interested in electrical engineering, he changed to physics after attending a class with Professor Ike Bowen. In his junior year he was one of two students awarded the highly coveted travel prize for scholastic achievement. This prize consisted of a grant sufficient for two students to travel in Europe for six months, from March of their junior year to the following September, with an itinerary made up largely of their own choosing. Of the candidates considered for the prize, six were selected to attend a special class on the arts, history, and culture of Europe, given by John MacArthur, dean of freshmen. This was intended to help the winners plan an interesting trip. The chosen two spent most of their time visiting the prescribed round of museums and cathedrals, but they did get to meet scientists H. A. Lorentz and H. Kamerlingh-Onnes.

The Nobel Prize in Physics

Carl David Anderson, who was born of Swedish parents - his father was Carl David Anderson and his mother Emma Adolfina Ajaxson - in New York City (USA) on 3rd September, 1905, has spent the bulk of his life in the United States. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1927 with a B.Sc. degree in Physics and Engineering, and was awarded his Ph.D. degree by the same Institute, in 1930. For the period 1930-1933 he was Research Fellow there, subsequently (1933) Assistant Professor of Physics, and Professor of Physics (1939) During the war years (1941-1945) he was also active on projects for the National Defence Research Committee and the Office of Scientific Research and Development.
His early researches were in the field of X-rays. For his doctoral thesis he studied the space distribution of photoelectrons ejected from various gases by X-rays. In 1930, with Professor Millikan, he began his cosmic-ray studies which led in 1932 to the discovery of the positron. He has studied the energy distribution of cosmic-ray particles and the energy loss of very high speed electrons in traversing matter. In 1933 he and Dr. Neddermeyer obtained the first direct proof that gamma rays from ThC generate positrons in their passage through material substances. Since 1933 he has continued his work on radiation and fundamental particles. Most of Anderson's researches and discoveries have been published in

Anderson v mlžné komoøe vyfotografoval kosmické paprsky a pøi studiu takto vzniklých fotografií objevil množství stop, z jejichž polohy vyplývalo, že by mohly vzniknout pùsobením kladnì nabitých èástic - ovšem èástic mnohem menších než protony.

Thomas Hunt Morgan won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1933 for his chromosome theory of heredity. On the basis of experimental research with the fruit fly (Drosophila), he demonstrated that genes are linked in a series on chromosomes and that they determine identifiable, hereditary traits.
An embryologist by training, Morgan turned his attention to Drosophila in 1908. On the basis of fly-breeding experiments, he developed a hypothesis of sex-linked characteristics, which he theorized were part of the X chromosome of females. In 1928, he came to Caltech to organize work in biology. The most influential biologist in America at that time, Morgan pioneered the new science of genetics, the essential science for the future of biology. In 1930, he also established a marine biology laboratory at Corona del Mar (the lab is still in use today). By then, Morgan had left Drosophila genetics and had returned to his earlier interest in developmental biology. He often spent weekends at the marine station working with an organism called the sea squirt. He remained on the Caltech faculty for the rest of his career.
Anderson arrived at Caltech in 1923 as an 18-year-old freshman, and never left. He discovered the positron in 1932, using a cloud chamber. Shortly thereafter, Anderson and his graduate student, Seth Neddermeyer, discovered mu-mesons, or muons. During World War II, Caltech scientists produced and tested land and aircraft rockets for the United States Navy. Anderson supervised the testing of aircraft rockets at China Lake and later visited the front lines in Europe to observe how the rockets performed. He served as chair of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy from 1962 to 1970, and was named emeritus in 1976.

Carl Anderson A soulful voice .... An expressive and versatile vocalist, Carl Anderson has worked in theatrical productions and recorded soul, pop, rock, and fusion dates. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and moved to Washington in 1969. Anderson sang with the rock band Second Eagle before relocating to Los Angeles in the early '70s and joining Motown in 1971. While working with Stevie Wonder on some songs that were never issued, Anderson began acting. He was in both the film and stage productions of Jesus Christ Superstar during the early and mid-'70s, and also made appearances in several L.A. clubs. CBS talent scout Larkin Arnold signed Anderson to his label in 1980, and Richard Rudolph produced his Columbia debut, Absence Without Love, in 1982. It didn't attract much attention, but the second LP, On & On, included the single "Magic" and duet "It's The Love" with Vanesse Thomas, which did well internationally. He cut two more LPs for the label, and the 1986 release Carl Anderson earned him his lone pop hit, the duet "Friends and Lovers" with soap star Gloria Loring that made it to the number two spot. Anderson recorded with Nancy Wilson and Weather Report in 1987; his duet with Wilson, "Forbidden Lover," won critical praise. He recorded An Act of Love for Polydor in 1988 and Pieces of A Heart and Fantasy Hotel for GRP in 1990 and 1992, respectively. The third release on GRP "Heavy Weather Sunlight Again" was released in 1994. After this release Carl Anderson took a break in recording. In 1997 he recorded a livealbum in the "Agape Sanctuary Concert Hall", a great album featuring Freddie Ravel, Michael Paulo, Alphonso Johnson, Leslie Smith and others.
