Believed to be long hand transcriptions of the originals, the letters describe Jane Addam's experiences and observations during her European travels. The third volume contains copies of letters written during her second European tour, 1887-1888. While in Europe, she studied the traditions and lives of the people, seeking a way of life in which she could put her ideas about social welfare into action. After visiting Toynbee Hall in East London, she decided to establish such a settlement in Chicago, later known as Hull House.

Modern History Sourcebook:
Jane Addams:
Why Women Should Vote, 1915
Occasion: A pamphlet originally, it was subsequently placed in Woman Suffrage: History, Arguments, And Results. As described on the title page, Woman Suffrage is "[a] collection of seven popular booklets covering practically the entire field of suffrage claims and evidence. Designed especially for the convenience of suffrage speakers and writers and for the use of debaters and libraries." Why Women Should Vote FOR many generations it has been believed that woman's place is within the walls of her own home, and it is indeed impossible to imagine the time when her duty there shall be ended or to forecast any social change which shall release her from that paramount obligation. The same thing is true of the Jewish women in their desire for covered markets which have always been a municipal provision in Russia and Poland. The vegetables piled high upon the wagons standing in the open markets of Chicago become covered with dust and soot. It seems to these women a violation of the most rudimentary decencies and they sometimes say quite simply: "If women had anything to say about it they would change all that." If women follow only the lines of their traditional activities, here are certain primary duties which belong to even the most conservative women, and which no one woman or group of women can adequately discharge unless they join the more general movements looking toward social amelioration through legal enactment.

Deann Lewallen February 25, 2003 Jane Addams Democracy or Militarism Address before the Chicago Liberty Meeting April 30, 1899 I. Brief Rhetorical Biography of the Speaker Laura Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. Her father, John Huy Addams, was an Illinois state senator from 1854-1870 and a wealthy mill owner. He fought in the Civil War as an officer, and became close friends with Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Addams was often described as a gentleman. Her mother, Sarah Weber, was described as a kind-hearted soul who cared very much about her family. Sadly, she died in 1863, leaving behind her four children, Jane being the youngest. Jane’s father remarried Anna Hostetter Haldeman in 1864, gaining not only a new wife but also, two new sons. Jane attended Rockford Female Seminary and graduated in 1881 as valedictorian in her class of seventeen. A year later the college became accredited and Jane received her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her parents became worried that she would not find a husband, so her father took her on a tour of Europe. Jane very much valued the opinion of her father.
