Women in Mathematics Day 2005
The next Women in Mathematics Day will be held on 25 May at De Morgan House. Talks will begin at
11 am , after half an hour of coffee, and the day will end at 4.30 pm , followed by an early supper at a nearby restaurant. While this is an occasion particularly for women active in mathematics to get together, men are certainly not excluded. Sessions will include talks by practising women mathematicians in a variety of appointments and at different career stages. The organisers would be very grateful if all members could encourage women mathematicians, particularly students (including final year undergraduates) and those at an early stage in their career, to attend this meeting. Anyone interested in giving a postgraduate talk should contact Cathy Hobbs (cahobbs@brookes.ac.uk). To register please contact Isabelle Robinson , Administrative Officer, (tel: 020 7291 9979, fax: 020 7291 9978, email: robinson@lms.ac.uk

These pages are part of an on-going project by students in mathematics classes. This site is very good because allows the student to perform a search using a chronological criteria. This site allows the student to search other resources to find additional resources. If my school was doing a theme around the nineteenth century this site would be great to research historical nineteenth century women mathematicians.
4000 Years of Women in Science http://www.astr.ua.edu/4000WS/4000WS.html This site is very good. It provides the student with valuable information about men and women that hae researched and solved the numerous problems. This site includes photographs, references, crossword puzzle's, and an interactive quiz. This ia a great site for students to see that women and men played an interesting role in discoveries in math science and technology.

Because Pathway's is about your future, we've devoted this space to our collective past. As a new feature, we'll be showcasing women in science, math and engineering who have paved the path before you. While we can't include everyone, each of the following women stands out for her accomplishments. Two of our first featured biography subjects, Reatha King Clark and Edna Piasano, were challenged to overcome racial and ethnic discrimination as well as bias and prejudice on the basis of their gender, in blazing their paths to success in their chosen fields. The stories of Caroline Herschel and Emmy Noether also illustrate the secret struggles women of centuries past faced in gaining recognition for their achievements, lest we forget how far we have come. We'll update our Bios page as often as possible, BUT if you are interested in learning more right now . . . Check out this amazing site on Women Mathematicians ! Reatha Clark King: Woman of Science During prehistoric times, women gathered food for their communities, learning by experimentation to distinguish hundreds of edible and medicinal plant. As seasons cycled, these women observed the effect that heat and rain had on certain plants, under what conditions those plants thrived and when they were first available for use. These early botanists were the first women scientists. Today, women continue to make significant contributions in every branch of science.

NOTABLE WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS: A BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY Edited by Charlene Morrow and Teri Perl Greenwood Press, Westport, CT, 317 pp., 1998 I enjoy reading biography. I especially enjoy well-written, informative articles about scientists and mathematicians. This volume contains 59 such articles, each 3 - 6 hard-hitting pages; so I found this book delightful. Obviously, the unique feature of these biographies is that they are all about women mathematicians. I was struck by how many of the biographies were about living women 40 of the 59 were alive in 1998. This contemporary nature of the volume enhances the impact of these 59 people, who have successfully devoted their lives to mathematics as leaders and contributors in this challenging field. Many, if not all, had to overcome prejudice, discrimination, and bad or misguided counseling to persist and succeed in what was historically a male dominated profession. I'll let Carl Friedrich Gauss' quotation, which he wrote about Sophie Germain and which appears in her entry in the book, speak more directly to this gender issue:

Indiana University Press, 1997, 320pp., $39.95 (hardbound), $16.95 (paperbound). In 1976, an article entitled "Mathematics and Sex" [2] was published in the American Mathematical Monthly. It was also printed in booklet form and mailed to MAA members. Although the title conjures up many irrelevant images, the focus of the article was an examination of the lack of equity for girls and women in mathematics education. The article mainly dealt with the educational experiences of girls in our schools (K-12) and the environment that actively discouraged them from pursuing the study of mathematics. Shortly thereafter, in 1981, the Ford Foundation published "The Problem of Women and Mathematics," by Lynn H. Fox [3]. The purpose of the study was to summarize the research literature on sex differences in mathematics. The report addressed three key questions:

Belenky, Mary F., Clinchy, Blythe M., Goldberger, Nancy R., and Taruli, Jill M. (1997), Women's Ways of Knowing , New York: HarperCollins. In response to a well-known study of learning by William Perry, who interviewed male students at Harvard, these authors sought to explore how a woman's learning differs. They have found through their interviews with women that there are several distinct phases of learning. They interviewed women having a variety of different educational experiences: college graduates, high school graduates, and the women in the "invisible college," those who struggle with learning about mothering but have received less formal education. Douglas, Susan J. (1995), Where the Girls Are , New York: Times Books. Where the Girls Are explores feminist thought and the conflicting messages women have received from the media from the 50's to the early 90's. Douglas shows how these messages have changed each decade and how women have wrestled with the choice to identify with or reject them. From the news media's representation of the women's movement in the 1970's to the escapism many women find in reading popular magazines such as

Richardson Foundation Regents Chair in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, is widely acclaimed as a talented and creative mathematician as well as someone who takes very seriously her obligation to mentor young women mathematicians. Through her research, Uhlenbeck has made significant contributions to our understanding of the fundamental properties of matter. In her professional life, she has demonstrated a perseverance that enabled her to succeed in science in spite of the discouraging roadblocks she encountered. After receiving her Ph.D. in 1968, she followed her bio-physicist husband to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then Berkeley, where she worked as a non-tenure track lecturer because the schools interested in her husband were not interested in her. In 1971, Uhlenbeck was offered an assistant professorship at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. This time her husband moved with her. However, the marriage ended a few years later, at which time Uhlenbeck joined the faculty at the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 1995, Uhlenbeck received the Common Wealth Award for Science and Technology from Sigma Xi, the national research honorary society, and, in 1984, was named Alumna of the Year by the U-M.

    The Journal of Higher Education - Volume 73, Number 2, March/April 2002, pp. 305-307
    The Ohio State University Press

    Excerpt
This engaging book explores the personal and professional development of women mathematicians during the 1940s and 1950s, when the number of mathematics PhDs awarded to women dropped to an all-time low. Murray reports the results of in-depth interviews with 36 women mathematicians who struggled against the postwar cultural norms that defined a woman's place as in the home. The preface and first two chapters provide a historic framework, directing the reader's attention to one significant observation: Between 1910 and 1939, women earned roughly 14% of the mathematics PhDs awarded in this country; since 1980 women have earned over 17%. But during the intervening years that figure dropped to below 5%. During the 1940s and 1950s, in particular, women mathematicians became token minorities, caught between the cultural demands of the "housewives' generation" and their professional ambitions. In subsequent chapters, Murray examines the social, cultural, and personal backgrounds of 36 women mathematicians who earned their doctorates during those two decades. Her goal was to understand, through extensive interviews, how women succeeded in mathematics at a time when social and cultural forces were least supportivewhen women mathematicians had to rely most heavily on their own resources to persevere in work they loved.
