MURRAY BOOK DISCUSSES WOMEN MATHEMATICIANS Women Becoming Mathematicians: Creating a Professional Identity in Post-World War II America . Her purpose was to determine the complex interplay between the personal and professional lives of those women who embarked on mathematical careers during this period, with a view to understanding how changes in American society during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s affected their career development and identities as mathematicians. From interviews with female mathematicians from that period, plus research into historical and sociological documents, Murray looked at how women in mathematics develop their identity from childhood through adulthood and into retirement. These women, having few examples to follow, improvised and "followed diverse paths in their struggle to construct a professional identity in postwar America," Murray said. Murray, interviewed by the Chicago Tribune for an article about women in mathematical careers, said the growing number of female role models might help "turn the tide" for women in the future who are thinking about making a career in a mathematical field. Research for the book Women Becoming Mathematicians: Creating a Professional Identity in Post-World War II America was supported by nearly $100,000 in grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the Center for Programs in the Humanities in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Notable Women In Mathematics:
A Biographical Dictionary
edited by Charlene Morrow
and Teri Perl
Reviewed by Libby Krussel
Until recently, Women of Mathematics: A Biobibliographic Sourcebook , 1987, edited by Louise Grinstein and Paul Campbell (also from Greenwood Press), and Teri Perl's Women, Numbers and Dreams were practically the only two reference works on women in mathematics. This new book complements the other two by emphasizing the human element. The result is a valuable book for and about women in mathematics at a level suitable for high school and early college students that celebrates the diversity present in the community of women mathematicians. The goal of the editors, stated on page xv, is admirable: to encourage more girls into mathematics and to spark enthusiasm for the field in all students. To this end, they have collected biographical information on 59 women mathematicians, spanning the last 2000 years. The emphasis, however, is on contemporary women mathematicians: of the 59, 40 are currently living and working in the field of mathematics or mathematics education in the US or in Europe. Much of this material comes from personal interviews, and thus goes beyond each woman's mathematics to discuss the person behind the mathematics. The essays are a delight to read. Each gives a very human and encompassing picture of the whole woman as mathematician, teacher, mother, wife or partner. Each one illustrates the path followed, not just professionally but also personally. Each woman's mathematical contributions are explained in terms that are easily understandable by a high school or college student interested in what a mathematics career may be like. This book provides an excellent complement and companion volume to the recently reviewed

Women In Mathematics: The Addition of Difference
by Claudia Henrion
Reviewed by Mary Shepherd
The book is divided into six chapters, each exploring a "myth" about women and mathematics. Each of the first five chapters include a profile (interview) of one or two women mathematicians. The interviews are for me what brought the book alive. Eleven women were interviewed for the book, but only nine profiles are included: Joan Birman, Lenore Blum, Fan Chung, Fern Hunt, Vivienne Malone-Myers, Marian Pour-El, Judy Roitman, Mary Ellen Rudin and Karen Uhlenbeck. There are not many quotes, if any, from the two women (Marcia Groszek and Linda Keen) who were interviewed do not have profiles in the book. I am not familiar with all of these women, but I truly enjoyed each profile. I thought my favorite would be about Joan Birman since she, like me, received her PhD at age 41. But the most compelling one for me was Vivienne Malone-Myers. I'm sure each reader will have a favorite, too. The book is very readable. Each chapter could be read alone without difficulty. I found the book a joy to read, even when I did not agree with the premise of the author. It would be a great book to give to young women to encourage them to pursue a career in mathematics. I believe it is accessible to most students, perhaps even at the high school level. More than that, I believe men in mathematics should read this book too. It contains valuable insights into how some women perceive the mathematical community, and both men and women can gain by discussing the myths presented in the book. I would certainly encourage women undergraduate students to read this book.

Ada Byron Lovelace anticipated aspects of general-purpose digital computing by more than a century. Cora Ratto de Sadosky advanced messages of tolerance and equality while sharing her mathematical talents with generations of students. This captivating book gives voice to women mathematicians from the late eighteenth century through to the present day. It documents the complex nature of the conditions women around the world have facedand continue to facewhile pursuing their careers in mathematics. The stories of the three women above and those of many more appear here, each one enlightening and inspiring. The earlier parts of the book provide historical context and perspective, beginning with excursions into the lives of fifteen women born before 1920. Included are histories of collective efforts to improve women's opportunities in research mathematics. In addition, a photo essay puts a human face on the subject as it illustrates women's contributions in professional associations. Clear, engaging, and meticulously researched

Dusa McDuff Women Mathematicians: Why So Few? The great field of mathematics stretches back in history some 8 millennia to the age of primitive man, who learned to count to ten on his fingers. This led to the development of the decimal scale, the numeric scale of base ten (Hooper 4). Mathematics has grown greatly since those primitive times, in the present day there are literally thousands of laws, theorems, and equations which govern the use of ten simple symbols representing the ten base numbers. The field of mathematics is ever changing, and therefor, there is a great demand for mathematicians to keep improving our skills in utilizing the numeric system. Many great people, both past and present, have made great contributions to the field. Among the most famous are Archimedes, Euclid, Ptolemy, and Pythagoras, all of which are men. This seems to be a common trend in mathematics, for almost all classical mathematicians were male. The twentieth century has been a century of change for women and their rights. They have been successful in gaining the right to vote, equal opportunity in the workplace, and many other freedoms. So why then is the field of mathematics still so sexually separated? Can it be that women just aren’t as well endowed in the area of mathematical thinking so that they just can’t compare to the male mathematical geniuses? This theory has been proven totally false on many occasions. A study by Jane M. Armstrong in 1978 showed that 13-year-old females actually performed slightly better than males on tests of mathematical computation, spatial visualization, and performance in algebra (Chipman 8). An analysis by Project TALENT in 1960 showed that males in 9
