Famous Mathematicians from Underrepresented Groups
(Version of 5 March 1998. This web page is still under construction.) Explanation: In our math building is a bulletin board titled "This Week in Mathematics" you can see both a web version of the bulletin board and a more detailed explanation . The bulletin board has several sections: this week's cool math link, this week's birthday, this week's math problem, and our department's calendar for the week. I change the four sheets each week; that's one of my duties as our department's webmaster. I've mostly been taking the biographies from the MacTutor website. They have the biographies of 1100 famous mathematicians from history, indexed alphabetically and also chronologically. That averages around 20 per week, so I follow my own taste in choosing one of those approximately 20 for this week's birthday. I don't always choose the "best mathematician" other criteria enter into my decisions too, such as who has the most interesting biography. The purpose of the bulletin board is to attract the attention of students walking past it, and perhaps lure some of them into mathematics. It recently occurred to me that one of the other purposes is to provide role models. Consequently, it would be a good idea to give additional weight to famous mathematicians from ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in our history books and/or denied opportunities to achieve in the past. For instance, until recently, women were mostly prevented from doing mathematics, so relatively few women have become famous in mathematics. We want to end this sort of discrimination, so those few famous women mathematicians should be publicized; they provide role models and give present-day young women the message that they can become mathematicians too. For this reason

Welcome to the Women in Mathematics (WIM) Home Page
Women in Math (WIM) is an organization at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). WIM is dedicated to serving the needs of women mathematicians at UMCP. In order to fulfill that purpose, WIM members have organized a number of events. Two ongoing activities are monthly lunch get-togethers and biweekly graduate women talks . We also have an electronic newsletter for our members. This WWW page is WIM's latest endeavor. It is our goal that this page will include information or links to information in the following categories:
  • Scholarships, Conferences, etc. Women in Mathematics Women in Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering Advice for Graduate Students in Math or Other Scientific Disciplines ...
  • Pictures are now available from the 2nd Annual WIM picnic held in June! It was a great chance for students, faculty and staff from our department to talk over sub sandwiches and watermelon.
I will always be on the lookout for new links to add. If you know of any, please let me know by sending e-mail to me at wim@math.umd.edu

Greek women Mathematicians and Philosophers Many Pythagorean women mathematicians (and philosophers in general) are mentioned by Iamblichos of Chalkis or Suda. Some women were students of Plato, others were daughters of philosophers. None of their books survived. Some say because they were destroyed by Christians for example because of the Pythagorean religion but I cannot confirm this.

    Introduction
If you have spent any time studying the history of mathematics, you will notice that the individuals mentioned in the history books are predominantly of the male gender. Women have certainly contributed to the development of the field of mathematics, but their contributions, at least until the 20th century, have not been noted. As we enter the 21st century, it is important to heighten our awareness of this social condition as we continue to encourage people of both genders to study and make advances in the field of mathematics.
In order to heighten your awareness of the role women have played in the development of the field of mathematics, your group will prepare a newspaper article which will include some general information about the history of mathematics, a chronology of major events, biographical information about at least two 20th century, two pre 20th century woman mathematicians, a success story from a math teacher at your school and conclude with a forecast for women's involvement in the future of mathematics as we enter the 21st century.
    The Quest
After completing this assignment, you will be more aware of the history of mathematics in general and the role that women have played in its development.

11th grade student Can you please tell me names of at least five female math teachers who changed history back then? Hi Kisha, There is a great history of mathematics web site at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, called the The MacTutor History of Mathematics archive . One of their pages, http://turnbull.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/Indexes/Women.html has a list of women mathematicians. Any of these and many more would satisfy your criterion. From the Mac Tutor list there a few that I would suggest that you read about. Their lives are facinating.

Now meet the women behind the mathematics. At this site, you can learn about the fascinating lives of women like Hypatia, who lived in Egypt from about 370 - 415 and worked with conic sections, influencing the work of Descartes and Newton. Mary Everett Boole, who lived in both England and France from 1832-1916, invented string geometry, a tool which helps students understand geometry concepts. Florence Nightingale, most famous for her work in nursing, also broke ground in the use of data collection and interpretation for describing 'social phenomena' like casualties in war. She also developed the polar-area diagram, now known as the pie chart. How You Can Use This Source:
    • Take some time to learn about some of the women who have made important contributions to what you now study as 'mathematics'.

Michelle D. Wagner In November 1993, responding to the dearth of competitive employment applications from women mathematicians, senior mathematicians at the National Security Agency (NSA) sponsored the Women in Mathematics Symposium In this article, we chronicle the evolution of WiMS over the last decade, and describe its outreach efforts towards the academic mathematics community. The 1993 Women in Mathematics Symposium The Symposium took place in November 1993, when approximately 60 women mathematicians from academia travelled to NSA for two days of technical talks, panel discussions, and feedback sessions. The most informative and provocative sessions of the conference were group discussions and daily feedback sessions. Academic participants shared their insights on the issues that women face in their pursuit of successful careers in mathematics, and made valuable suggestions on how the NSA could encourage more women to pursue studies and careers in mathematics. From these discussions emerged four major themes:
