Mathematician Curtis McMullen Wins Prestigious Fields Medal
By William J. Cromie Gazette Staff Curtis McMullen, a newly appointed professor of mathematics, has won the Fields Medal, the highest award given to mathematicians. The prestigious prize, which recognizes both existing work and promise of future achievement, is given every four years to mathematicians age 40 and under. McMullen is 40. No Nobel Prize exists for mathematics. "This is a substitute, and I'm delighted to receive it," McMullen said. He received a gold medal and $15,000 Canadian because the founder of the award, J.D. Fields, was Canadian. The cash equivalent is about $9,600 U.S., considerably less than the $1 million given to Nobelists in physics and chemistry last year. "That's OK," said McMullen. "Mathematicians are basically happy just proving their theorems." McMullen's major work involved finding the relationship between the geometry of three-dimensional objects and the universal structure that occurs in the transition from regular to chaotic physical behavior. Physicists have found a surprising amount of common structure in different systems whose behavior changes from predictable to unpredictable. Examples include smoothly flowing water that becomes turbulent, asteroids suddenly swinging out of regular orbits, and a heart suddenly starting to beat irregularly. McMullen has constructed a new geometric perspective on the structures common to such physical changes.

Shaping up mathematics
Fields medalist Bill Thurston helps students harvest fruits of geometry
Teachers Bill Thurston, standing on left, and Ian Agol, standing right, use hands-on exercises with everyday shapes to geach multidimensional thinking to students.

By Sylvia Wright
In the 1884 novel Flatland , a square living on a plane bemoans his two-dimensional life. "Life is somewhat dull in Flatland," he writes. "How can it be otherwise, when all one’s prospect, all one’s landscapes, historical pieces, portraits, flowers, still life, are nothing but a single line?" The Flatlander knows what he is missing because he has just been carried by a teacher into Spaceland, the third dimension. At UC Davis, mathematics professor William Thurston takes his students on a similar trip, into the world of multidimensional thinking. But while the square was impoverished by his new awareness, Thurston’s students are enriched. After a few classes of "Geometry and the Imagination," objects as mundane as apple peels or bathroom tiles and as exotic as the expanding universe all assume new character and complexity. "I just thought this class was going to be on geometry and shapes," said junior Heather Witt, a chemistry major. "I had no idea how much it would apply to everyday things. I’ve never looked at vegetables, for instance, and thought they were mathematically related. And they are."

Jesse DOUGLAS (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) - Did important work of the Plateau problem which is concerned with finding minimal surfaces connecting and determined by some fixed boundary. Laurent SCHWARTZ (University of Nancy) - Developed the theory of distributions, a new notion of generalized function motivated by the Dirac delta-function of theoretical physics. John Willard MILNOR (Princeton University) - Proved that a 7-dimensional sphere can have several differential structures; this led to the creation of the field of differential topology. Michael Francis ATIYAH (Oxford University) - Did joint work with Hirzebruch in K -theory; proved jointly with Singer the index theorem of elliptic operators on complex manifolds; worked in collaboration with Bott to prove a fixed point theorem related to the "Lefschetz formula". Paul Joseph COHEN (Stanford University) - Used technique called "forcing" to prove the independence in set theory of the axiom of choice and of the generalized continuum hypothesis. The latter problem was the first of Hilbert's problems of the 1900 Congress.

Russian mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1978 for his contributions to the theory of Lie groups, though he was not allowed by the Soviet government to travel to Finland to receive the award. In 1990 Margulis immigrated to the United States. Margulis' work was largely involved in solving a number of problems in the theory of Lie groups. In particular, Margulis proved a long-standing conjecture by Atle Selberg concerning discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. The techniques he used in his work were drawn from combinatorics, ergodic theory, dynamical systems, and differential geometry. Henri Frankfort

Fields Medallist Back to Articles Interview with Richard Borcherds
The Guardian
28 August 1998 Borcherds is a 38-year-old, bearded, spectacled, slightly nervous genius. His work virtually defies explanation, which means that everybody knows that he is brilliant, but nobody understands why. Only one other person in Cambridge really comprehends his calculation, and the two gentlemen rarely meet. It seems natural that somebody might become bitter and frustrated at the failure of others to understand his work, but as far as Borcherds is concerned, it is not a problem. He has proved the moonshine conjecture, those that need to know have acknowledged it, and nothing else matters. All the newspapers which announced Borcherds’s award linked him with Trinity College, Cambridge, but I was not to meet him in the Great Court, in the Wren Library, or in Isaac Newton’s study. Instead, I wandered to the maths department which occupies a decrepit building, with metallic industrial staircases, and corridors which have the drab feel of a deprived inner city school. Although there are plans to build a shiny new department, with large open spaces designed to encourage brainstorming and collaboration, Borcherds is happy where he is. He does not like to collaborate, and is content to spend most of the day in his spartan office, scribbling at his desk or staring out of his window to the “Curry Mahal” opposite.

Dr. Rita Colwell's statement on recipients of Fields Medal and Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in Mathematics
I am pleased to congratulate Vladimir Voevodsky and Madhu Sudan on receiving the most distinguished prizes in the mathematical sciences. Their accomplishments reflect the recognition that mathematics underlies all fields of science and engineering, enabling progress in our economy, our industry and our lives. We are proud that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported the groundbreaking work of these honorees. The Fields Medal, the world's highest honor for mathematical research, rivals the Nobels of other sciences. Vladimir Voevodsky, currently at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., shares the 2002 Fields Medal with Laurent Lafforgue, a colleague in France. Dr. Voevodsky conducted his prize-winning research in algebraic geometry and number theory, developing novel ways to describe the geometric shapes of solutions to algebraic equations, with support from NSF grants. Madhu Sudan, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, is receiving the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, which recognizes outstanding work in the mathematical aspects of computer science. His work in advancing the theory of probabilistically checkable proofsa way to recast a mathematical proof in computer language for additional checks on its validityand developing error-correcting codes was accomplished with the support of an NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award and individual grants.

International Mathematical Union The Fields Medal The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize Fields Medal The Fields Medal is often described as "the Nobel prize for mathematics." Though there is no formal rule to this effect, Fields Medals have traditionally been presented to young mathematicians (no older than 40). The 2002 Fields Medals went to Laurent Lafforgue of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, honored for making major advances in the "Langlands Program," and to Vladimir Voevodsky of Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, USA, honored for developing a new cohomology theory for algebraic varieties. Rolf Nevanlinna Prize The Nevanlinna Prize has been awarded since 1982 by the International Mathematical Union. It recognizes exceptional work in the more mathematical aspects of computer science. Like the Fields Medal, it is traditionally restricted to young researchers, no older than 40. The prize is named for Rolf Nevanlinna, a past president of the IMU. The 2002 Nevanlinna Prize went to Madhu Sudan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, in recognition of his work on "probabilistically checkable proofs, to non-approximability of optimization problems, and to error-correcting codes."
