Viewing Veblen as a potential asset, Rose replied to Flexner, "I wonder if Veblen would be a good man to give me a list of mathematicians in this country and abroad, that is a short list of the really eminent men in this field-men combining mathematical achievement with those human qualities which would inspire the younger worker" (p. 36). Indeed, Rose met with Veblen and with G. D. Birkhoff at Harvard before he left for Europe. Rose reported that he and Birkhoff discussed "at length the relation of mathematics to physics and chemistry." But Rose also chose to record Birkhoff's insight on the "human qualities" of the mathematicians in Paris and Germany. As Rose indicated based on his conversation with Birkhoff

Euromath Support Center
Euromath Support Center is taking part in the Euromath Project, a project of the European Mathematical Trust and to offer user support in all of Europe in relation to EUROMATH. EUROMATH is a project to enhance research support for european mathematicians and to stimulate interchange among them by creating a research environment based on modern information technology. The project aims to produce both software and services. Also the Euromath Bulletin is printed in frame of this project. The foremost aim of the Bulletin is to disseminate useful information to the European mathematical community on the use of computers in assisting mathematicians in various tasks. The Bulletin also informs regularly on developments in the Euromath Project. The EUROMATH system is a homogeneous working environment adapted to the needs of the mathematician, based on a single data model. The system is designed to incorporate an editor capable of handling mathematical documents, accessing and creating mathematical databases, an electronic mail interface and computer algebra capability. The EUROMATH system is built upon the WYSIWYG approach and the full XML-compatibility of the WYSIWYG structured editor (also EUROMATH editor) based on the structured Thot editor. Support for XML and additional functionality (also EUROMATH applications) has been developed by a number of partners. Organisations involved in the development of EUROMATH include:

EMS and SIAM Plan Joint Activities
Rolf Jeltsch
I am very happy to have this opportunity to introduce the European Mathematical Society to SIAM members. At ICIAM 99 in Edinburgh, Gil Strang and Jim Crowley of SIAM met with Heinz Engl (chair of the Applications of Mathematics Committee of EMS) and me (EMS president in 1999-2002) to discuss cooperation between our societies. One of the possibilities we considered is a joint conference in Europe. For EMS, this would be the first major conference in applied mathematics. We also discussed the introduction of an EMS/SIAM lecture series in applied mathematics, similar to a series EMS is already running on a biannual basis. This article, and a similar column being prepared for the EMS Newsletter by SIAM president Gil Strang to introduce SIAM to EMS members, mark the real beginning of our cooperation. Founded in 1990, EMS is a rather young organisation, far younger than SIAM. Being young means that most things do not yet run along well-established paths. This might be seen as a disadvantage, but it also has a positive aspect, namely lots of room for new initiatives.

Remarkable Mathematicians: From Euler to von Neumann
by Ioan James
Reviewed by Philip D. Straffin
I will say first that I think everyone who teaches mathematics at the college level should own this book. It contains 6-10 page biographical sketches of 60 of the most important mathematicians born between 1707 and 1903. The information seems to be quite reliable, the presentation is usually interesting, and there are fascinating quotes by and about the mathematicians. Careful attention is paid to interrelations between the sketches, and by reading them in sequence you get a good sense of the development of the mainstream European mathematical community from the 18th to the early 20th century. Through the inclusion of Germain, Kovalevskaya, Noether, Takagi, Ramanujan, half a dozen American and two Soviet mathematicians, you see the beginnings of the broadening of that community. Perhaps even more usefully, you can dip in quickly to find that key fact or anecdote about Jacobi or Borel for tomorrow's class, or a picture of Poncelet in uniform to enliven your transparencies. You can think if you agree with the opinion of an unnamed contemporary of Cauchy: "His harsh and rigid spirit, his lack of indulgence towards the young who follow a scientific career, make him one of the least likeable of the savants and certainly one of the least liked." You can learn about Cayley's work to allow women to study at Cambridge, or be moved by Hausdorff's dignified choice of suicide in the face of Nazi deportation. I don't know of anywhere else where this information appears in such accessible form.

History of the EMS
Apart from mathematics…
History of the EMS
You, Prof. Atiyah, have been very much involved in the establishment of the European Mathematical Society around 1990. Are you satisfied with its development since then? ATIYAH: Let me just comment a little on my involvement. It started an awful long time ago, probably about 30 years ago. When I started trying to get people interested in forming a European Mathematical Society in the same spirit as the European Physical Society, I thought it would be easy. I got mathematicians from different countries together and it was like a mini-UN: the French and the Germans wouldn't agree; we spent years arguing about differences, and - unlike in the real UN - where eventually at the end of the day you are dealing with real problems of the world and you have to come to an agreement sometime - in mathematics, it was not absolutely essential. We went on for probably 15 years, before we founded the EMS. On the one hand, mathematicians have more much more in common than politicians, we are international in our mathematical life, it is easy to talk to colleagues from other countries; on the other hand, mathematicians are much more argumentative. When it comes to the fine details of a constitution, then they are terrible; they are worse than lawyers. But eventually - in principle - the good will was there for collaboration.

General information History : The European Mathematical Society (EMS) was founded in 1990 in Madralin near Warsaw (Poland). Discussions to constitute such a society started in Helsinki in 1978 on the occasion of the International Mathematical Congress. The discussions were conducted within the European Mathematical Council, an initiative of Sir Michael Atiyah. ( More on the history of the EMS 1990-1998. Purpose : The purpose of the Society is to further the development of all aspects of mathematics in the countries of Europe. In particular, the Society aims to promote research in mathematics and its applications. It will assist and advise on problems of mathematical education. It concerns itself with the broader relation of mathematics to society. In short, it seeks to establish a sense of identity amongst European mathematicians. Created by and for the European mathematical community, the EMS is an effective intermediary between mathematicians and those in charge of politics and funds in Brussels Members : Today, the members of EMS consists of about 50

The European Mathematical Society
The first proposals for a European Mathematical Society were made at the 1978 International Congress of Mathematicians at Helsinki. The main idea at that time was the creation of a Federation of European Mathematical Societies, although a Society with individual members was also suggested. The organisational problems of a Society with individual members was thought to be too great to be tackled at the time, and the majority were in favour of a Federation. The main purpose was seen to be improving the cooperation between European Mathematical societies and to improve the communication and exchange of information. Despite the positive feeling towards setting up a Federation, all that was achieved in concrete terms was the setting up of the European Mathematical Council. This was an informal body, with Atiyah as its chairman. The Council, containing about 20 representatives of European mathematical societies, met in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984. It set up EUROMATH, an ambitious project to create a huge database of all European mathematical knowledge. Of course such a database would only be useful if storage problems could be addressed, searching tools created etc. The European Mathematical Trust was set up to direct the EUROMATH project. At a meeting of the Council in 1986 the original two ideas of a Federation of European Mathematical Societies and a European Mathematical Society with individual members was again discussed. A committee was appointed to consider the two suggestions. The Committee reported in May 1988 with the unanimous proposal that a Federation of European Mathematical Societies be formed. It was recognised that problems existed; for example some European countries had several mathematical societies, while other countries did not have any. At a full meeting of the Council in Oberwolfach in October 1988 the French mathematicians were strongly against a Federation, wanting instead a Society with individual members. A compromise between the two was reached, the name 'European Mathematical Society' was accepted, and a proposal by the Finnish delegate to host the Society in Finland was accepted. As Bourguignon writes in [2]:-
