Pafnuty Chebyshev 's parents were Agrafena Ivanova Pozniakova and Lev Pavlovich Chebyshev. Pafnuty was born in Okatovo, a small town in western Russia, west of Moscow. At the time of his birth his father had retired from the army, but earlier in his military career Lev Pavlovich had fought as an officer against Napoleon's invading armies. Pafnuty Lvovich was born on the small family estate into a upper class family with an impressive history. Lev Pavlovich and Agrafena Ivanova had nine children some of whom followed in their father's military tradition. Let us say a little about life in Russia at the time Pafnuty Lvovich was growing up. There was a great deal of national pride in the country following the Russian defeat of Napoleon, and their victory led to Russia being viewed by other European countries with a mixture of fear and respect. On the one hand there was those in the country who viewed Russia as superior to other countries and argued that it should isolate itself from them. On the other hand, educated young Russians who had served in the army had seen Europe, learned to read and speak French and German, knew something of European culture, literature, and science, and they argued for a westernisation of the country.

European Mathematicians of the Dark Ages Boethius (475-524 A.D.) Bede the Venerable (673-735 A.D.) Bede (ca. 673-735), later qualified as Bede the Venerable was born in Northumberland, England, and became one of the greatest of the medieval Church scholars. His numerous writings include some on mathematical subjects, chief of which are his treatises on the calendar and on finger reckoning.
Alcuin (735-804 A.D.) Alcuin, born in Yorkshire, was another English scholar. He was called to France to assist Charlemagne in his ambitious educational project. Alcuin wrote on a number of mathematical topics and is doubtfully credited with a collection of puzzle problems that influenced textbook writers for many centuries. Gerbert (950-1003 A.D.) Gerbert was born in Auvergne, France, and early showed unusual abilities. He was one of the first Christians to study in the Moslem schools of Spain, and there is evidence that he may have brought back the Hindu-Arabic numerals, without the zero, to Christian Europe. He is said to have constructed abaci, terrestrial and celestial globes, a clock, and perhaps an organ. Such accomplishments corroborated the suspicions of some of his contemporaries that he had traded his soul to the Devil. Nevertheless, he steadily rose in the Church and was finally elected to the papacy in 999 A.D. He was considered as a profound scholar and wrote on astrology, arithmetic and geometry. Adelard of Bath (1120 A.D.)

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Mathematics in India History of Mathematics in India In all early civilizations, the first expression of mathematical understanding appears in the form of counting systems. Numbers in very early societies were typically represented by groups of lines, though later different numbers came to be assigned specific numeral names and symbols (as in India) or were designated by alphabetic letters (such as in Rome). Although today, we take our decimal system for granted, not all ancient civilizations based their numbers on a ten-base system. In ancient Babylon, a sexagesimal (base 60) system was in use. The Decimal System in Harappa In India a decimal system was already in place during the Harappan period, as indicated by an analysis of Harappan weights and measures. Weights corresponding to ratios of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 have been identified, as have scales with decimal divisions. A particularly notable characteristic of Harappan weights and measures is their remarkable accuracy. A bronze rod marked in units of 0.367 inches points to the degree of precision demanded in those times. Such scales were particularly important in ensuring proper implementation of town planning rules that required roads of fixed widths to run at right angles to each other, for drains to be constructed of precise measurements, and for homes to be constructed according to specified guidelines. The existence of a gradated system of accurately marked weights points to the development of trade and commerce in Harappan society.

OUR ALLIES ORGANISATION PROFILES
The European Mathematical Society, EMS
I am very happy that ECMI is giving me this space to introduce our organisation. The EMS was founded in 1990. Hence, it is a rather young organisation, younger than ECMI. Being young means that most things don't yet run along well-established paths. This might be seen as a disadvantage, but it also has a positive aspect, namely lots of room for new initiative. With its 46 corporate members, international, national and regional societies, the EMS embraces Europe as a continent and all of mathematics, pure and applied. Nevertheless, you might not yet have heard a lot about the EMS because, while having a strong leg in pure mathematics, it has not been very prominent in applied mathematics. However, the EMS is aware that applied mathematics is becoming more and more important. This is why, after the first and second presidents, Friedrich Hirzebruch and Jean-Pierre Bourguignon respectively, I have been chosen as an applied mathematician. One of my main aims will be to strengthen the EMS's leg in applied mathematics. For this reason I am very happy that ECMI joined the EMS as a corporate member last year. Even before this, the ties between the EMS and ECMI were strengthened when one of ECMI's former presidents, Heinz Engl, became Chairman of the Committee for Applications of Mathematics. ECMI's current president, Vincenzo Capasso, also serves on this committee.
