Last summer, Professor Coates held a mathematics workshop at Zhejiang University which provided Chinese students as well as those from neighboring countries with a chance to gain ideas and stimulation from world's top mathematicians. "The best students in China equal the world's best," Professor Coates told Xinhua. "Those students even solved the problems that I encountered in my research." He admitted that to compare with the world's top universities, Chinese universities were still lagging behind in terms of mathematics research level. Coates received the International Cooperation Award at this year's International Congress of Chinese Mathematics.

Posts: 847 Posted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 3:05 pm Post subject: Chinese mathematicians im rather confused on how there are so many results attributed to china, arabia, and india, (such as, they attribute pascal's triangle, the bernolli numbers, the pythagorean theorem, the base 10 system, etc) but the people who invented/discovered these are never named in the books i read asides from ramanujan, but perhaps that is because he went under the wing of a western european mathematician.Al kwarizi is only known (did i spell that rihgt?) because we coined algebra after his name. perhaps it is because i live in america, so the resources around me are completely biased for west european mathematicians does anyone have any names?

2 Chinese Mathematicians Awarded Chen Xingshen Maths Prize Two young Chinese mathematicians Duan Haibao and Xi Nanhua were awarded the 10th Chen Xingshen Maths Prize on Monday in Weihai, a city in east China's Shandong Province The Chen Xingshen Maths Prize was established in 1985 in the name of the noted Chinese maths professor Chen Xingshen, with a Hong Kong entrepreneur patronizing the prize. Up to date, the Chen Xiangshen Maths Prize has been granted for nine times, awarding 18 middle-aged and young Chinese mathematicians in total, which has become more and more influential in the maths circle both at home and abroad. Duan Haibao and Xi Nanhua, the two prize winners, are research fellows with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Chinese Value of PI The earliest known value for "pi" in China is 3, which was used as far back as the 12 century B.C. By the first century AD, the Chinese had calculated the value of " pi " to 3.15147; by the 3rd century to 3.141024 by Liu Hui; and in the fifth century to 3.1415929 by Tsu Chung-chih. This accuracy was not to be arrived at in Europe for another thousand years, until the 16th century AD. Other Trends in Chinese Math The Tang dynasty (A.D. 618 to 907) set up an examination system that included math and writing. In 1084, the Suanjing Shi Shu math text was printed under the Southern Sung Dynasty. The Chinese made tremendous achievements in algebra, from solving quadratic equations to working with indeterminate equations. The development of algebra reached its peak during the later part of the Sung and and early part of the Yuan dynasties (13 and 14 century AD). After 1230, mathematics was removed from the examination for good, in favor of literary subjects. By the time of the Ming emperors in the 17 century, Western mathematical influence began to transform Chinese mathematics, which brought to an end the long history of indigenous mathematical accomplishments in China.

A Chinese-English Mathematics Primer
Volume 23 in the Proceedings of the Centre for Mathematical Analysis
Preface
My own interest in the work of Chinese mathematicans arises from their significant contributions to the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations and, in particular, of plane quadratic systems. However, Chinese mathematics covers a very wide range. This is hardly surprising, since a quarter of the world's population is Chinese. It is predictable that during the next quarter century the importance of Chinese mathematics will increase greatly. Although a number of Chinese mathematicians read English they may prefer to write in Chinese, either because writing is more difficult than reading or because they give the home market priority. Thus an ability to read Chinese mathematical papers will become increasingly useful. Unfortunately the Chinese language presents special difficulties to a Western reader - even consulting a dictionary is a problem! The accompanying

Scientific progress and technological advancements of the last century were possible because of discoveries in basic science.
  • In Hong Kong, what can universities do to foster intellectual curiosity in science? How can basic science be further developed at Hong Kong's leading universities? Should schools look to the government for support in research, or should they reach out to corporations for funding? Can Hong Kong capitalize on its proximity to China to become a leader in basic science for the region?

Report on the ICHM-sponsored Day of Lectures (January 9, 02004) at the AMS-MAA meeting in Phoenix, Arizona
Karen Parshall The ICHM co-sponsored (with the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America) a day of lectures on Friday, 9 January, 2004 at the Joint Meetings held this year in Phoenix, Arizona. The session- co-organized by Joseph W. Dauben, Lehman College (CUNY), Karen V. H. Parshall, University of Virginia, and David E. Zitarelli, Temple University-drew an audience that varied during the day between 50 and 200. It was comprised of the following talks: Speaker: Maria Sol de Mora (marcharles@inicia.es), Mary Sol de Mora, Plaza Adriano, 7, Sobretico, 08021 Barcelona, Spain. Title: Analytic Geometry: Descartes versus Fermat Title: The Brachistochrone Problem and Its Sequels Abstract: To a large extent Hilbert's well-known list of problems (Paris, 1900) steered the course of mathematics in the 20th century. However, posing problems is an old mathematical tradition and there are many famous problems from the 17th century, among them the most influential Brachistochrone Problem (Johann Bernoulli, 1696). As a consequence of this problem mathematical physics (in its actual meaning) got its start by developing essential variational methods that resulted in a new branch of mathematics. Moreover, the concept of an analytic function was formulated (Joh. Bernoulli, 1697) and extended (Euler, since 1727). This lecture gives a comprehensive overview on these cornerstones of mathematics.
