M orningside Award
The Morningside Medal of Mathematics is awarded to outstanding mathematicians of Chinese descent of age under 45 to encourage them in their pursuit of mathematical truth. Up to six medals, two gold and four silver, are awarded every three years at the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians. The 2001 Morningside Medals also carry a cash award of US$50,000 for the Morningside Lifetime Achievement Award in Mathematics; US$25,000 for each of the gold medalists; and US$10,000 for each of the silver medalists. A committee of internationally renowned mathematicians, chaired by Professor Shing-Tung Yau, selects the medalists.
The first medals were awarded on December 12, 1998 at the First International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM 1998), at a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing . The Second Morningside Medal of Mathematics Awards Presentation and Symposium was hold on December 17, 2001 in Taipei at the Second International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM 2001). In addition, a special Morningside Lifetime Achievement Award in Mathematics will be presented. In 2004, recipients of the Third Morningside Medal of Mathematics will be announced at the Third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians which will be held in Hong Kong
In addition to the name of the medalist, each gold and silver medal has the image of a Mobius band and a fundamental domain. They were chosen not only for the simplicity of their image, but also because of their significant contributions to the development of mathematics in the 20

    Two Chinese Mathematicians Honored
Two Chinese mathematicians Di Xiaqi and Wang Yuan were awarded the Hua Luogeng Mathematics Prize Monday, the highest honor of its kind in China.
During the award ceremony, Yuan Yaxiang, vice-director of the China Mathematics Society, said the two mathematicians, both members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, were selected for their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics.
The biennial prize was initially set up in 1992 in honor of late Chinese mathematician Hua Luogeng, who was noted for his pioneering research in mathematics. The prize is sponsored by the China Mathematics Society and the Hunan Educational Publishing House. Problems and Puzzles
Many people have long had a tendency to associate problems and puzzles with the 'Chinese' but nobody really knows why they have been given this East Asian origin. One suggestion is that perhaps the Europeans were inclined to ascribe puzzles the name of what was, to them, a puzzling civilization.
Diagram 13.Puzzle of the Rings. The above picture describes the 'Puzzle of the Chinese Rings'. This problem was first found by Cardan but was later treated at length in mathematical terms by John Wallis in approximately 1685. Lastly, in the nineteenth century it was discussed using binary arithmetic notation by Gros. This puzzle was commonly known in China, at the beginning of this century as 'Ring of Linked Rings' or in Chinese translation as Lien nuan chhuan Another geometrical puzzle related to the Chinese in the rearrangement of a set of wooden pieces (a square, a rhombus and five triangles of different sizes). This puzzle is known as being one of the oldest amusements of the East. To the Chinese this puzzle is known as the 'Seven Subtle Shapes' or Chhi Chhiao . However, to the Europeans it was known as 'tangrams'. This puzzle is related to geometrical dissections, static games and also to the great wealth of geometrical forms employed by Chinese builders through the centuries in the lattice-work of windows.
