Related Category: Mathematics Bourbaki, Nicolas, pseudonym under which a group of 20th cent. mathematicians has written a series of treatises on pure mathematics. The mathematicians have all been associated with the Ecole Normale SupErieure in Paris at some point in their careers; among them are the French scholars Claude Chevalley, AndrE Weil, Henri Cartan, and Jean DieudonnE along with the American Samuel Eilenberg. The pseudonym was jokingly adopted from Gen. Charles Bourbaki , becuase of his disastrous defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. The principal aim of the Bourbaki group ( L'Association des Collaborateurs de Nicolas Bourbaki ) is to provide a solid foundation for the whole body of modern mathematics. The method of exposition is axiomatic and abstract, logically coherent and rigorous, proceeding normally from the general to the particular, a style found to be not altogether congenial to many readers. The ongoing series of books began with ElEments de MathEmatiques in 1939, and other books on algebra, set theory, topology, and other topics have followed. Many books in the series have become standard references, though some mathematicians are critical of their austerely abstract point of view.

Roll over Bourbaki, and tell Cholesky the news
According to a July 14 story in Japan Today A French language teacher and 20 other plaintiffs filed a damages suit Wednesday against Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara for his insulting remarks against the French language last year. Malik Berkane, a 46-year-old principal of a French language school in Tokyo, filed the suit at the Tokyo District Court, together with 20 other French and Japanese people, demanding an apology over the remarks and 500,000 yen in compensation for each plaintiff. Before becoming a politician, Ishihara was a novelist. His 1955 Season of the Sun describes wealthy students who "express their defiance of postwar respectability by gambling and brawling and indulging in promiscuous sex.” He made a political name for himself with the million-selling 1989 nationalist screed " The Japan that Can Say No: Why Japan Will be First Among Equals ". So why did Ishihara insult the French language, and how? Because some teachers of French criticized a reorganization of Tokyo Metropolitan University, and because (he says) the French language can't be used to count. According to the petition, Ishihara said Oct 19, "I have to say that it should be no surprise that French is disqualified as an international language because French is a language which cannot count numbers."

Nicolas Bourbaki
An important movement in twentieth-century mathematics was generated by the polycephalic mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki who published, beginning in 1939, a series of books which presented advanced mathematics in a highly abstract format. Much folklore has grown up around him, so this is an interesting topic for investigation. You are encouraged to read some of his works, either in the original French or in English translation. One novelty of the works are the historical notes that are attached. Read some of them and discuss what you think of them as history. These notes have been collected into a single volume entitled Elements of the History of Mathematics , translated from the French by John Meldrum , Springer, c1994. An interesting side project would be to compare portions of this to what you can find in the standard histories of mathematics on the same topic.

    The Bourbaki view
The book series in the name of Nicolas Bourbaki (a pen-name for a group of French mathematicians) 'takes up mathematics from the beginning, and gives complete proofs'. This beginning [bourbaki-sets] is something like Zermelo set theory axiomatized in a system of first order logic, which includes an indefinite descriptor building in the Axiom of (Global) Choice. For whereas in the past it was thought that every branch of mathematics depended on its own particular intuitions which provided its concepts and prime truths, nowadays it is known to be possible, logically speaking, to derive practically the whole of known mathematics from a single source, the Theory of Sets. Elsewhere [bourbaki-found] says: On these foundations, I state that I can build up the whole of mathematics of the present day; and if there is anything original in my procedure, it lies solely in the fact that, instead of being content with such a statement, I proceed to prove it in the same way as Diogenes proved the existence of motion; and my proof will become more and more complete as my treatise grows. The Bourbaki development is intellectually elegant, if rather austere. Stress is placed on developing properties of various key mathematical structures like topological spaces and groups. Some structures are instances of several others (e.g. topological groups are both topological spaces and groups), or are derived from others using certain canonical techniques such as completion. The relative sophistication of these techniques means that the set theory is used heavily even in the study of abstract structures; moreover, set theory is often necessary to provide existence proofs for many of them. So although Hilbert's axiomatic method was an important inspiration, deduction from the structure axioms uses much more than pure (first order) logic. Really, one is working all the time in axiomatic set theory. In the IMPS terminology
