A salesman named Les is the host of a special party at The Grind After the Grind for some friends from the office – Art, Lance, Megan, and Roger. Their occupations are, not in this order, compliance officer, programmer, risk manager, and trader. Cande R. is dancing in Roger's lap. Les says, "I brought us together, tonight, because I discovered that each of us has the same relationship between his or her name and his or her occupation." After a few minutes, Lance says, "If that's the case, would you pay for Mattie Lup Roset to come over and join us for a while?" Megan blows up. "That does it. Tomorrow morning, I file a sexual harassment suit." What is each person's occupation?

Professor has a few tricks to make math fun

Recreational mathematics. Although the term seems like a classic oxymoron, it is actually a class here at Temple. Designed to get people thinking about the magic of math, the course is taught by a handful of professors, including one who knows the trick to making math fun. The competition, sponsored by the actuarial science program in the risk, insurance and healthcare management department of the Fox School of Business and Management, pitted 11 area high schools in a series of math events. Winning was secondary to encouraging an interest in mathematics. And, if a trick or two could be used to advance the cause, then Chein was up for the task. Problem Solving through Recreational Mathematics with Bonnie Averbach, an actuarial science professor at Temple. An avid fan of logic and math puzzles, Chein began toying with the idea of creating a course on recreational mathematics in the early 1970s. As quickly as you can say presto chango, the class was born. It is now offered once a year and has many faculty members vying to teach the class.

My primary interest over the years has been burr puzzles, but there is another small category of puzzles which is especially intriguing to me. It is 3-dimensional box-packing puzzles where the box and all the pieces are rectangular solids. The number of such puzzles that I am aware of is quite small, but the 'tricks', or unique features that the puzzles employ are many and varied. I know of no other small group of puzzles which encompasses such a rich diversity of ideas. Presented here are 11 such 'block-packing' puzzles. The tricks to most of the puzzles are discussed here, but complete solutions are not given. The puzzles are grouped according to whether there are holes in the assembled puzzle and whether the pieces are all the same or different. For each puzzle, the total number of pieces is in parentheses. If known, the inventor of the puzzle, date of design, and manufacturer are given.
    I. No holes, all pieces the same
"Aren't these puzzles trivial?", you ask. Well, you are not far from being completely correct, but there are some interesting problems. David Klarner gives a thorough discussion of this case in

I have written several expository mathematical articles and several articles about recreational mathematics. Below is a list of papers that I have published, with short descriptions of the subject of each. Many of these topics make great undergraduate colloquia. Please contact me if you're interested in hearing a talk on any of these subjects. In the long term, I intend to spend more time on these sorts of projects. Somehow I never seem to find the time. In conjunction with Al Petrofsky , I plan to write down a lot of ideas about the topology, geometry, and symmetry of knitting. There is some really interesting and surprisingly sophisticated mathematics behind knitting. Al and I wrote a not-quite-finished HTML version of our work on Mobius knitting . I also a have page of links for mathematical knitting. In conjunction with Tara Holm , I plan to finish a paper about symmetries of parking lots. Introduction
This unit was developed at San Diego State University in EDTEC 596 , Interdisciplinary Teaching with Technology, Bernie Dodge , Instructor. This interdisciplinary unit will focus on recreational diving. Students will explore the effects that the ocean has on divers as well as the effects that divers have on the ocean. Students will also learn math through the perspective of diving.
    Content Areas and Grades
This unit is anchored in grades seven to nine with the learning emphasis placed on math and physical education. The unit can be extended to grades ten to twelve with very little modification.
    Curriculum Standards
Students will explore recreational diving and topics including rates of change (with respect to oxygen consumption and related topics), understanding charts and graphs (with references to slope), and physical effects of diving on the body, along with how these topics are related. Math Standards Addressed Physical Education Standards Addressed
    • Discover the benefits of exercise as a way of life
    • Enjoy all forms of exercise and movement
    • Develop movement knowledge
    • Social development
Students will be given the opportunity to practice math skills and learn about the physical aspects of recreational diving by exploring information on the web. Math skills will range from learning function and algebra concepts, problem solving and mathematical reasoning and putting mathematics to work.

Raymond Smullyan, a Mathematician, Philosopher and author of several outstanding books of logical puzzles, tells, in one of his books, a revealing story. A friend invited him for dinner. He told Smullyan that his teenage son was crazy about Smullyan's books and could not wait to meet him. The friend warned Smullyan not to mention that he is a Mathematician and that Logic is a part of Mathematics because the young fellow hated Mathematics.
Having told this story, would it be wise to announce up front what this site is about? Perhaps against a better judgement, I've put together a manifesto that aims to explain the purpose of this site.

Mathematical puzzles vary from the simple to deep problems which are still unsolved. The whole history of mathematics is interwoven with mathematical games which have led to the study of many areas of mathematics. Number games, geometrical puzzles, network problems and combinatorial problems are among the best known types of puzzles. The Rhind papyrus shows that early Egyptian mathematics was largely based on puzzle type problems. For example the papyrus, written in around 1850 BC, contains a rather familiar type of puzzle.
You can see a picture of the Rhind papyrus Seven houses contain seven cats. Each cat kills seven mice. Each mouse had eaten seven ears of grain. Each ear of grain would have produced seven hekats of wheat. What is the total of all of these? Similar problems appear in Fibonacci 's Liber Abaci written in 1202 and the familiar St Ives Riddle of the 18 th Century based on the same idea (and on the number 7). Greek mathematics produced many classic puzzles. Perhaps the most famous are from
